Black Madonna & Child

Madonna & Child

The Virgin Mary with the

Infant Christ

Choctaw Virgin Mother & Child

Madonna & the Infant Jesus

Come let us adore Him

THE ELEMENTS OF THE MADONNA & CHILD

ARE SO SIMPLE THEY CAN BE REDUCED TO THREE CURVED LINES: a woman bowing her head

towards the baby she enfolds in one arm.

They are Mary and her baby Jesus – but they are also all mothers

and all babies, a holy image which stirs elemental emotions, a Christian icon which draws part of

its strength from its pagan ancestors, and which has inspired some of the world’s greatest artists.

The earliest known representation of Mary is probably at least 1800 years old. Ancient tradition insists that Luke, the writer whose gospel alone tells some of Mary’s story, was also an artist who knew Mary and painted her. However, despite the passionate claims for cherished icons in hundreds of churches, none is older than a little ochre fresco in a vault of the Catacomb of Priscilla in Rome. It is believed to date from the late 2nd or early 3rd century, long after Luke’s death. If the date is correct, it proves that at the time when Christian martyrs were being thrown to wild animals in the arena, some rich Romans wanted to be buried under Mary’s loving protection. The figures are faint, and the wall damaged, but the elements which make the image one of the most cherished pieces of Christian iconography, the head tenderly bent towards the child, the cherishing encircling arm, are already present.

Over the next two millennia the image will constantly be re-created, by great artists and by artisans turning out cheap devotional images. The pair will be carved, woven, painted, cast in metal, the child is sometimes a jolly plump baby, sometimes a wizened miniature man, the mother given European, African, Asian, South American, Maori or Inuit features, the figures dressed in homespun or gowned like emperors and hung with jewels.

377 1.11.05

The works of art themselves will often be attributed miraculous powers, a faith which will endure even into the last decades of the cynical 20th century, when huge crowds gather in Ireland convinced they can see the gentle swaying of the head of a stone statue. It will be appropriated for secular purposes in images which must have provoked a shiver of shock, so that Agnes Sorel will be painted in the 15th century, with baby and bared breast, as The Queen of Heaven rather than the mistress of Charles VII of France, just as Sir Peter Lely will paint the scandalous Barbara Villiers in the 17th century, dandling her child by Charles II. The only constant will be the two figures, and the protective curve of the arm, so that even when an artist like Henry Moore pushes it to near total abstraction, the image remains instantly recognizable.

The earliest known images of women are startlingly different. Although academic argument still rages about how to interpret the Venus of Willendorf and her sisters – goddess or fetish – it seems inescapable that they connect to fertility, whether of the tribe, the land, the cattle or the hunted prey. The Willendorf figure was found in Austria in 1908, and is now believed to be around 25,000 years old. Although she has generous breasts and hips, her face is a half-hidden featureless blob, she has no feet, and in common with many other ancient images of women, she has no arms to hold a baby: child-bearing was evidently more important than child-rearing.

The cult of the Great Mother, the source and protector of life, her fertility intimately bound up with the cycle of the agricultural year, was already ancient in many cultures when the unknown Roman artist decorated Priscilla’s tomb. Although some Christian leaders railed against it, in many cultures such pre-Christian beliefs were seamlessly incorporated into the new cult of the Madonna and Child. It has been suggested that the iconography of Mary drew directly on these older faiths, such as the worship of the Egyptian goddess Isis, often portrayed cradling or breast-feeding her son Horus – or, in an equally striking parallel, supporting his dead body.

The Madonna and her child are sometimes merry, but as often grave, even sad. The shadow of death is already on them. The desolating strength of the pietà, the mother holding the sagging body of her adult dead son, comes from understanding that a circle, which began with the arm curved around the baby, has been completed – the circle, in any culture, of life itself.

We all have close relationships with different people during our life . . . and whether this person is your aunt, cousin, partner or simply a great friend have you ever wondered just how well you really know them?
