The goal is to design a modern bedframe and nightstand set. I knew I wanted to push the design, not only by adding technology to it, but by using the function of the technology to drive the design.

So I started brainstorming...

Sketching

Once I found a direction for my design, I made scale models to further explore details. I knew I wanted the materials to be laminated plywood and metal. Throught the scale models, I was able to refine my design and work out some proportion issues.

Pre-Prototype

Final PrototypeI was overjoyed with the outcome of my final prototype. It integrates all of the technology I set out to put into it, while making a statement with the design. The night stands feature Bluetooth wireless speakers (which easily sync to any bluetooth device), two power outlets in the back allow you to neatly and conveiniently plug in phones, lamps and anything else which requires power. The headboard of the bed have a strip of LED lights which glow through the negative space allowing you to change the ambient lighting.

Form follows function, best describes the design. Where there didn’t need to be material, none was added. The headboard only has material where the LED lights are placed, and the negative space is designed into it to allow the colors to be unobstructed. The curved panel on the side of the night stands creates an accoustic effect to direct the sound into the room.

The goal is to design a lamp with the elegance and simplicity of the Calla Lily, which produces a plesant ambient glow in a room. To keep every part of the lamp flat pack, the base is designed as a set of rings which stack on top of each other. With the layered rings the opportunity was taken to incorporate a cord storage under the lamp, to neatly hide the excess cord.

Through several combinations of cone shapes and sizes, balance was found in form. By using three cones, light release was controled, and hotspots are eliminated. This allows the lamp to have a strong presence in a room, while giving off a pleasant glow on surrounding surfaces and walls. To reduce the materials needed to assemble the lamp, a tab system was designed for each of the cones to fold into themselves. Not only did this mimick the shape of the flower petal, but also eliminated the need for glue.

Lamp Constrution

Construct the cones by rolling the sheets and matching the tabs to the openings on the opposite end. Make sure to wet the wood with a wet cloth to make it easier to shape the cone.

Place wood glue on the cone guide rings.

Arrange cones on the base, match-ing them up to the corresponding guide rings.

Base Constrution

Construct the base by stacking the rings on the mounting screw and gluing the layers together.

After constructing the base, run the wire through to the top and attach the light socket to the mounting screw.

Pull inspiration from a designer’s style and translate that into a unique design.

Inspiration for this mouse was pulled from the designs and style of Marcel Breuer. Studying his works, I defined them as clean, simple, and innovative.

I wanted to focus on making a functional, ergonomic mouse, with a simple and clean form, while trying to stay away from the conventional shape of the mouse.

Inspired Mouse

After several sketches, and form studies in foam, I came to the con-clusion the best way to acheive my design goal was to use where the hand touches the mouse to dictate where there would be surfaces, thus reducing unecessary material, keep-ing the fuction ergonomic, as well as giving the mouse a simple, clean look.

Working with Big Time Products who are mainly known for the numerous lines of gloves they have in Home Depot, the design objective was to explore the options of creating a line of hot water recirculation pumps.

Eterna HeatHot water recirculation

Initial research started with investigating into how hot water recirculation pumps work, where they are installed, and the benefits of installing them.

PT-1000While designing the hot water recirculation pump, we were presented with the challenge of producing packaging for the product as well. What came of it was not only a family of packaging, but a small advertising campaign to draw attention to the reletively unknown hot water recirculation pump.

Packaging Objectives:

-Warmth through photos and colors-Follow the feel of the advertising-Upgradeable Eterna Heat products listed on box-QR Barcode on box which directs you to the website-Support for pump and components-Multiple designs for multiple configurations

Research brought to our attention that people really were not aware of what hot water recirculation pumps were, or thought that they were ‘old technology.’ This seemed like the perfect opportunity to create a marketing campaign, lead by humerous and recognizable advertisements.

"The designer... has a passion for doing something that fits somebody’s needs, but that is not just a simple fix. The designer has a dream that goes beyond what exists, rather than fixing what exists... the designer wants to create a solution that fits in a deeper situational or social sense."
