IANS’s research indicates a large jump in CISO

effectiveness with a single change in reporting

structure. Most CISOs report into the CIO – but a

preponderance of Executive-level CISOs have solid line

reporting outside technology. Achieving this change in

reporting represents a significant change in the

traditional corporate hierarchy – how will you move this

mountain?

At a recent event, we posed the question:

“There is no CISO

role, it is enacted

by the Dir IT, who

reports to the

CTO.”

“All IT functions,

including information

security, are centralized

for the company.”

• If you can’t convince leaders to allow you to report

solid-line outside of CIO, try to engender a dotted

line relationship to risk, finance, or legal, etc.

• Plan for resiliency. You might have a collegial

relationship with your CIO, but if he leaves, will you

still be able to do good work?

• Based on other CISO Impact factors, are you able to

shift from day-to-day operations to a more strategic

posture?
