FAMOS Motivation and Goals• Goal is to coordinate Arctic
Ocean modeling experiments nationally and internationally
• Better understand marine (i.e., sea ice and ocean) circulation and processes of the Arctic Ocean based on measurements and modeling with high and very high temporal and spatial resolution
• Enhance our understanding, diagnostics and forecasting of the small scale processes influencing Arctic changes
• Preceding each meeting, a 1-day school on arctic ocean modeling is held
FAMOS is the continuation of Arctic Ocean Model Intercomparison Project (AOMIP), 1999-2009

2015 FAMOS Meeting Goals• Improve Arctic
modeling, employing very high resolution models
• Develop and test new arctic monitoring/observing systems
• Improve predictions of Arctic environmental parameters with reduced uncertainties.

Meeting Themes
• Sea ice observations, predictions and modeling
• Small scale processes (eddies, internal waves, mixing)
• Large scale processes (general circulation, regional and processes studies)
• Bio-geo-ecosystem modeling and observing
• Data for modeling and
• Planning of future FAMOS research

2015 FAMOS discussions• What is the future of accurate sea ice predictions and who cares
about this?• What are the present and future challenges for biogeochemical
modeling and observations with high resolution?• What are the unsolved/untouched problems of large-scale regional
Arctic Ocean modeling to better understand circulation and hydrography changes?
• What is “high resolution” modeling and observign and what resolution is needed in small-scale and climate-scale studies?
Meeting report being compiled. All materials on website, including recordings of all presentations and discussions

IASC Snow Proposal
• Goal is to facilitate a network to enhance interactions between research on snow related questions in the Arctic– Observations and modeling
– Terrestrial snow and snow on sea ice
– Improve interdisciplinary communication and outreach
– Initial cross-cutting workshop to discuss ways forward
• Lead: Martin Schneebeli (CWG), WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research, Davos, Switzerland
• Potential tie-ins to U.S. snow research activities?
