BLACKS DOWN TO HOODOO SIDEScotch too strong for Caulfield

By GEORGE McTAGGART

University Blacks again went down to their hoodoo side, Reservoir OldBoys, who recorded their first win for the season .

Old Scotch were too strong for Caulfield Grammari, leaders in B Section.

Reservoir raced away from theBlacks in the second quarter to runto a 9-goal lead and although Blacksfought back R.O.B.'s finished on towin comfortably.

A brilliant second quarter pavedthe way for North Old Boys to scorean easy win over Ormond and Uni-versity Blues got back to the winninglist at the expense of Coburg.

Old Scotch and Caulfield were re-markably even for the first half butScotch forged ahead in the third quar-ter and went on to win by 39 points .

Old Haileybury proved too strongfor Parkside to gain the leadership ofC Section and Old Melburnians wonwell over Fawkner .

d are now clear

Old Geelong's 8-goal burst in thethird term and their accurate kicking, gave them a 3-goal win over OldCamberwell and AJAX scraped homefrom Assumption by a point .

State Bank (bad kicking and all)beat Old Brighton by 4 points, LaTrobe Blacks went away from St .Kevin's in the second half, and WestBrunswick beat Beverley Hills bymore than 6 goals .

In the Juniors, Monash Universitythrashed Ivanhoe and UniversityBlues beat Ormond by 2 goals .

In Section 2, Reservoir beat De LaSalle by 7 points in a high-scoringaffair, and West Brunswick beat St .Bernard's by a similar margin.

Ul~PI~.E'S CORNE RBy Kevin McKay

With so many new umipres joining usover the past two weeks, it is probably agood time to discuss one of the most im-portant ; means of field umpiring - ballbouncing .

It is imperative that an umpire be ableto bounce the ball consistently well, straightand high.

A great deal of practice is required .The following fundamentals are common

to all umpires who bounce the ball well .THE GRIP - Two alternative grips are

commonly used by umpires :-- Seam running into body (Method A) .- Seam running across body (Method B).

In "Method A" both hands are reason-ably close together, giving more controlover the direction in which the ball willrise after being bounced .

- The possibility of the ball bouncing toyour left or right is negligible .

- If the ball is not placed flatly on theground during the bounce . it can eitherbounce away from you or over your head .

- A disadvantage of this method is thatyou will have more difficulty in grippingthe ball in slippery conditions.

- In Method B" a firmer grip can be takenover the ends of the ball which is im-portant in slippery condition sThe ball will not skid on wet surfaces aswith "Method A" .

- The ball will bounce either left or rightif it is not placed flatly on the ground .

For this reason it is perhaps more difli-cult to control than "Method A" .

learn A great deal of practice is required to

hands to enable strengt

h a flat, with straightbounce .

Umpires should learn both methods, com-mencing with "Method B" .

The bounce - you must aim to obtainful straight ,a care-cont control high placing Thi

sthe requires ball on c theground.

The closer the hands can actually guidethe ball to the ground, the greater controlyou have over the bounce .

This is best done by Stepping forwardwith at leg

, the wdarist so as knee s

to be able leanin

toplace your hands and the ball right downonto the ground .

Your hands must be exactly opposite eachother to place the ball flatiy.

Place the ball down onto the grounddirectly in front of your leading foot .

Pao 4

Maintain your balance during this proce-away fromo not bounce the ball too far

your foot.

Practice will indicate the appropriate dis-tance .

The bounce should be strong but not sostrong that you lose control .

Timing and balance will also assist youto gain correct placement of the ball ontothe ground .

Achieving good balance starts from thetime you commence to walk in' for thebounce .

It does not matter if you are betterbalanced by walking in two, three or fourpaces before placing your front foot for-ward, just so long as you find a patternwhich suits you and then stick to it .

Once the ball has left your hands, im-mediately step back a few paces, both togive the ruckmen clear passage to the ball, and to allow you to view the contest .

Do not watch the flight of the ball.Always practice the whole procedure the

same as you would bounce in a match,-Get a secure grip .- Walk In .- Bounce the ball .- Move back quickly a few steps .

"POSITION AND DIRECTION FOR THEBOUNCE "

Every umpire must know the correct dir-ection to walk in for the bounce .the the days, th

e being alblindedby the sun .- On windy days bounce the ball so that

the wind will tend to carry the ballaway from you, not over you .

wUmpiresouare instructe tha t

MUST NOT bepractised.

If because of adverse ground conditionsit is decided to "throw up the ball" theplayers should be advised of your intention .

Do you know that on June 2nd, 1899 Es-sendon player A. J . Thurgood using theplace kick, kicked the ball 107 yards 2 ft .1 inch (slight wind assistance).

On August 6th, 1912 using the place kickand kicking into the wind D . J . McNamarareached the distance of 102 yards .

PREVIEWING TODAY'S GAMESA SECTIO N

Some tipsters really are bad. I havein mind the Truth's panel of six expertswhich got themselves eight winners outof a possible 36 In last Saturday's Leagueround . I am encouraged to retain the pinI used for Round 4.

De La Salle are looking good on top ofthe ladder, having been undefeated to date .I have a feeling they will find Old Trinitya more determined combination than anythey have despatched thus far, but lookforward confidently to them remaining inthe winners circle.

University Blues journey out to St. Bern-ard's which will relish catching a lot oftired students after a week of Inter-Varsitymatches . St. Bernard's will win this oneby a wide margin .

Coburg and North Old Boys, both wellequipped in the following division, willstage a keen contest in the shadows ofPentridge . Coburg have proven to be in-consistent to date and I strongly favourNorth .

Reservoir and Ormond look to be evenlymatched with Reservoir's current form muchmore attractive . The sight of some Ormondstars limping last Sunday morning did otimpress me and Reservoir could climb outof the hot seat they presently occupy.

Blacks and Monash are taking a holiday,to allow the rest of the section to catchup on games played . - Alf Keam.

B SECTIO NFour weeks gone and what have we

here". - An Old Scotch which IS good andexciting - a Caulfield Grammar which isrich in names and talent as well as yearsand inches (in the wrong places) . - AGeelong which reacts well to a little bit ofneedle and shows fight (maybe thats it!) -A Marcellin moving quietly but surely on- a reactivated Collegians - A "don'tknow" Old Paradians and Ivanhoe and a"do know" Carey, St. Kilda C .B .C. andMelbourne High .Inability to beat Geelong at home raises

doubts about Paradians - then you realisethe only two teams they have led at thesiren have yet to win so I must selectCaulfield even though they would have beenannihilated by Scotch but for Fox andLester .

Overweight Rovers (notwithstanding earlygoals) and an unprotected John Butcherwill not work although the class of Mor-phet and Fletcher and the doggedness ofGriffiths and McDonald will keep them init.

A seething Ray Wookey who eats scribesfor breakfast will ensure Geelong will de-feat Marce llin further proving Davis is onlyone of 20. Marcellin are capable of an upsetbut will finally bow to Geelong's homeground and fierce dedication.

On reflection Geelong's form is good -

they should have beaten Caulfield (eventhough Davis was down) .

Scotch surely must beat Carey withHinrichson savaging the forwards, Morgan'sversatility and King's dream disposal toSherwen . The Black Prince (or Omar??)will demand disciplined team work .

Ivanhoe shocked by losing at home butthere is nothing in St . Kilda's performancesto suggest they will break the ice (unlessthe wind blows across their ground).

Collegians are in it and I doubt if theywill let Melb . High set them back again .Collegians to win but I think it will be agood match . - John Byrne .

C SECTIONThanks Fellas for doing the right thing

- five out of five for the tipster.A four is already shaping up with a tussle

between five teams for fourth position.Top side Old Haileybury at Kew will

find the smaller ground a little hard toadjust to, however I think they are goodenough to hold top place .

Parkside and Old Melburnians will bethe match of the day . Melburnians' toptalent are starting to shine and I'm pick-ing Melburnians to win by a narrow mar-gin .

Fawkner at home to Hampton Roverswill be flat out to retain a spot in the fourand will make amends for last week .

Alphington are improving and will gainfour points at the expense of Power House .

Old Ivanhoe Grammarians, refreshed froma good win last week will hit their strapsagain today with a win against U.H.S .O.B .- Alex . Johnson .

D SECTIONOld Xav's must be jumping with joy with

this season's success and I'll put my neckout and make them my early favouritefor the flag.

Their captain, Peter Naughton is in fineform and playing well week after week .Today I expect him to lead the way againand inspire his,Xav's to a clear win overState Bank .The Bank have notched 2 and a half wins

but certainly do it the hard way ; 19 goals38 in successive weeks is not percentagebuilding football !

AJAX got a fright last week but todayshould not be troubled by Old Camberwellwhile Elsternwick may just shade Old Brigh-ton in what I expectr to be a "cliff-hanger"at Brighton Beach .

Assumption Old Collegians are certainlymaking their presence felt and they are my"dark horse" for the September play-off .They will be too strong for Brunswick atthe Dunstan Reserve .

Old Geelong with deadly accuracy (17-4)got up last week and prevented me fromtipping all five; I'll turn back to themtoday as National Bank are in the doldrumsand I can't yet see them "breaking the ice" .- Jim Fidge .

Page 14 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - MAY 22nd, 1976

How about a progress score Ed .? JOHNBYRNE Is right off beat - just ask GEE-LONG! !

Progress score next week, Jim - afterall there's only been three games for ALLof you Scribes . - Ed .

E SECTIO NI'd be good if it wasn't for Findlay's

mob. Wait till their head office shifts toAustralia an d the chairman gives them afree issue of a round ball . Plenty of ex-cuses then.

All North Brunswick needed was a bit ofencouragement to break the ice, but I'mgoing for Heatherton and the fresh air thisweek.

LaTrobe Blacks will do Monash Whites(both LaTrobe teams won last week, whilstboth Monash teams lost . An opportunityfor a Ph .D. here) .

Old Mentonians will be too polished forCommonwealth Bank ; who ever heard ofLady Tellers in the first ruck .

St . Pat's-Monivae will have little troublein gaining 4 more points against a dis-appointing ANZ Bank . (How do I get intouch with Tommy Hanlon?) .

A.M.P . and St . Kevin's were both biglosers last week . A.M.P .'s second succes-sive away match so I'll go for St . Kevin'snow that we are in the North wind sea-son . Nothing worse than a strange groundand a northerly blowing off the Onions inthe Burnley gardens .

Congratulations to Alec Johnson's officeboy . - Syd, Whitfield .

F SECTIO NLast week saw some improvement in my

selections and apart from the reversal ofGlenroy's form, it could have been fivewins .

This week the match of the day will beWest Brunswick v St . Bede's with WestBrunswick coming out on top although theirwinning margin will not be as great as theirearlier matches.

Bulleen United will account for FootscrayI .T . who have not been very impressive oflate . Thornbury really let me down lastweek and I can't see them getting up toknock off Bulleen-Tempiestowe.

Beverley Hills put up a pretty good showagainst West Brunswick last week and willbe rewarded this week with a win overLa Trobe Uni. Reds .

I'll put my neck out again and tipGlenroy to win over Uni . Reds. - KeithFindlay .

P trouble in accounting for the home side .

When will players, and coaches realize, that we play football and have no place forfootbrawl?

LOOKING BACKBy Noel Rundle

5 Years Ago - 1971St. Bernard's stalwarts Bob Hampson and

Peter "Tub" Atkinson became the club'sfirst players to reach 150 games. Peter hadalso been secretary for 5 years .

Lucky Monash Blues - scraped homeagain . For the third successive wek Mon-ash Blues won by a narrow margin - threepoints this time - at the expense of OldScotch who were in front when the sirensounded and lost the game when Monashgoaled from a free kick awarded a fewseconds before the siren .

Marshall, Galbraith, Bartley (Monash) andAddison, Heaton, Welch (Old Scotch) werebest .Coburg (21 :15-141) annihilated Melbourne

High (3 .10-28) .Alan Salter (Coburg) and Sam Birtles

(Monash Blues) had been appointed coachesof teams to play South Australia and Tas-mania while the managers of the respectiveteams were Brian Le Brocq and Fred Cold-rey.

10 Years Ago - 1966John Anderson proved a capable full for-

ward for Old Scotch Juniors with 7 goalsagainst Coburg to bring his tally to 14(What happened to the true boot? - Ed . )

Ormond were thrilled with Ian Cameron'sgreat display against Footscray Tech, for his50th game - "tigerish and tough" .

Collegians announced Prime Minister,Harold E . Holt, as a financial member ofthe club for season 1966 .

It was reported that "Gympie" Sutherlanddropped a trayfull of glasses at "Common-wealth Bank's Saturday night turn"reason advanced was something about Nancyand "Gympie's" thrill of his life .

25 Years Ago - 1951Among the 'B' Section notes Coburg

thanked Geelong for their great hospitalityafter the game. One who no doubt enjoyedit was Bob Sinclair "many thanks for hisacceptance of that quite thankless task ofboundary strider" (No doubt Bob couldstill handle the hospitality but not theboundary - Ed . )

'A' Section captains were Joe Sheehan(Ormond), Doug Arnold (Hampton Rovers),Peter Cox (Old Melburnians), J . Thomas(Comm . Bank), Geoff Sinclair (Univ. Blues),Keith Lewis (Collegians), Wally Sparks(Ivanhoe) .

Who captained Old Scotch, Brunswick andUniv . Blacks ?Sad to report - Old Xaverians went down

to undefeated 'B' Section leaders AlphIng-ton with scores 21-20 to 0 .1 . Yes, OldXav's scored in the second quarter andnot again !
