Long-term Effects of Glyphosate

after Roemheld et al., 2009

Changeover to Non-GMO Soya experiences

in Denmark.

Pilegaarden, Hvidsten, Denmark.

Presentation by Ib Borup Pedersen.

Sows – Straw based system (Summer)

Transponder feeding and natural ventilation

Standard farrowing house

Effects on health on changing to NON-GM soya.

 Sows have higher milk production and better

appetite.

 Sows can look after 1-2 piglets more at the udder.

 Less medicine usage.

 Less abortions and more piglets born per litter.

 No bloat or ulcers in sows.

 Sows live longer, sows drop in production after 8th

layer, on GM soya after 6th layer.

 No yellow diarrhoea in piglets on NON-GM soya and

non-desiccated grains.

Medicine Use: Sows and piglets

Non-GMO from April 2011

A statistically significant observation.

From 0,2 - >1ppm Glyphosate in feed

gives 0,95 pigs less live born.

“It goes really well for you to get sows to lie with many pigs. One has to take note of the fact that from about May 1st onwards, the sows lie with 1-2 piglets more at the udder. This is believed, in the herd, to be in conformity with the time when you have switched to non-GMO feed. It is certainly undeniable that it looks like, (without having made statistics on it), but with the naked eye when you walk through the sows and check the sow cards the sows are lying with substantially more pigs than they did the last two lactations.”

The Veterinarians observations.

The second Veterinarian connected to my farm, has given

evidence to Aarhus University's Memorandum.http://dca.au.dk/fileadmin/DJF/Notat_gmofoder__uk_version_Memorandum_on_The_feeding_of_genetically_modified_glyphosate_resistant_soy_products_to_livestock.pdf

Changeover Weaners Weaners coped with the change to feed

containing mainly soya as protein, without medication. This was not the case with GM soya.

 Edema in weaners worst at high levels of Glyphosate in the feed.

An experiment going from Natural soya, back to GM soya.A few days after all pigs had diarrhea, in the weaner barn.

Medication was needed throughout.

Conclusion Statens Husdyrbrugsforsøg beretning 677

Pig study from 1990

Removal of two farrowings from the study, hid a statistically significant lower piglet

survival % contradicting all the advisors, farmers and veterinarians observations,

when feeding desiccated grains.

Clear trends in the study:

The real findings support my observations. Groups without Roundup have:

 Up to 9% higher piglet survival 0.2 – 0.8 L milk more per day

 Fewer early born / abortions Less diarrhea

 Exact symptoms Aarhus University said were likely to occur more frequently, when

feeding with GMO soya and Roundup residues.

Does GMO soya make ulcers in pigs?

A Danish GMO feeding study

Ulcers are in Denmark graded after a scale from 0-10

 0 = 100% healthy

 1 = Ripples in white part under 1 mm

 2 = Ripples in white part 1-3 mm

 3 = ripples > 3 mm

 4 = Erosion – Ripples fallen off. Under 0,5cm.

 5 = Erosion area > 0,5 cm

 6 = Ulcers under 0,5 cm or light scar tissue

 7 = Ulcers 0,5 – 2 cm or scar tissue

 8 = Ulcers > 2 cm or scar tissue

 9 = Severe scar tissue, entry hole bigger

than ½ cm

 10 = Massive scar tissue entry hole under

½ cm.

Danish VSP preformed a GM feeding study on pigs from 7 - 100 kg.http://vsp.lf.dk/Publikationer/Kilder/lu_medd/2015/1058.aspx

 Statistically significant 13,7% more severe ulcers ( column 8-10)!

 (17% if included column 7-10 figur 1.) All GM fed pigs had poorer stomach health.

 Weaners (7 – 30 kg): 14 dead and 50% more medicine used in GMO group; 7 dead in NON-GMO group

 450 – 750 g GMO soya in 100 kg NON-GMO feed! – run over at the feed factory

 3% more energy in NON-GMO feed, ( more concentrated feed normally stresses the stomach)

Grading ulcers and inflammation in the

fundus part of the stomach

Gastritis (Ulcers in fundus)

0 = No ulcers

1= < 1 % of Fundus has ulcers

2= 1-10 % of Fundus has ulcers

3= > 10 % of Fundus has ulcers

Inflammation / reddening, browning

and ripple grading. (See photos)

Trial 1: Inflammation and ulcers in the fundus

part of the stomach.

 About 6% more ulcers in GMO soya fed group, (in fundus part).

 Inflammation is similar in the two groups.

Glyphosate tests: Study 1 & 2.

 http://vsp.lf.dk/~/media/Files/PDF%20-%20Publikationer/Meddelelser%202015/Meddelelse_1058.pdf

Study 2 - Results. Monsanto visited the knowledge center before

study 2 was planned.

Study 2 was not originally planned!

Statistically significant more males had ulcers.

77% of male and only 58 % female had ulcers.

A clear trend.

GMO soya gave worse stomach health.

It was noticed in the study that the NON GMO

group had better appetite.

 There were 1072 pigs in each group, to begin with.

 812 pigs from each group continued to slaughter weight. 260 got removed to make room in the pens!

 At 30 Kg the largest and smallest piglets were removed, (mainly smallest) which clouds the findings, as

ulcers are mainly seen in pigs that do not grow well.

 It only costs 6 Euros to examine one stomach! Why did only 25% of pigs get tested in the second study? This

is the reason that no statistic significance could be found, making this study biased.

 The second study had equal amounts of Glyphosate in the two feed groups: GMO is the only difference.

Inflammation, ulcers, browning and folds in

the fundus part of the stomach.Study 2. http://vsp.lf.dk/~/media/Files/PDF%20-%20Publikationer/Meddelelser%202015/Meddelelse_1058.pdf

• GMO group had 7,5% more pigs

with inflammation of the

stomach.

• 2% less pigs with ulcers starting

in the fundus part of the

stomach, ( under 1% of area)

• GMO soya fed had slightly

more severe (Score 2-3)

browning and folding of

Fundus part of the stomach. In

all near 3 %.

Ulcers are a serious problem in

modern pig production.

 11% of slaughter pigs and 25% of sows have severe ulcers at slaughter in

Denmark. (8-10)

 30 % of pigs and 51% of sows have ulcers or scars from healed ulcers at

slaughter in Denmark (6-10)

 http://www.vja.dk/multimedia/Meddelelse_975_Mavesundhed_hos_slagtesvin_og_slagtes_er.pdf

USA GMO feeding study on pigs,

weaning to finishing weight. GM feeding study “Carman and Wlieger” gave similar results, when feeding GM soya

and maize.

Inflammation of the stomach went up by 16% of pigs in males and 22% in females

and they found that the weight of the ovaries had increased by 25% compared to the

pig’s body weight.

 NOTE: NO ulcers! Likely due to home milled corn and soya!

 The findings are statistically significant!

VSP claims their study, in no way, shows any adverse

health effects when feeding GMO soya to pigs,

WHY?

 The Knowledge Centre for pigs (VSP)

claims that the 2-5% more particles over

2 mm in NON-GMO feed compared to

the GMO feed, is the reason for the

statistically significant better stomach

health study 1!

 Their own studies on coarseness in feed,

show an even bigger difference in

coarseness to have no effect, on

stomach health in pellet feed.

 A bogus claim!

A Smear Campaign? VSP annual conference: Dr. Niels Kjeldsen, head of the research study and Jan W

Pedersen, head of DTU Department of Risk and Nutrition Group of Chemical Risk

Assessment and GMO state that there are no problems using GMO soya or

Roundup.

 Why did it take a further 2 years before the paper on the study was published?

 Was it too politically hot? Did the study only have one purpose, to quell the sole

farmer raising the alarm?

 Is GMO soya more important than the health of Danish pigs?

The real result of the study is that 2-4million more Danish pigs are likely to suffer from

ulcers due to GMO soya and all pigs have a more strained stomach health!

From:

Teratogenic Effects of Glyphosate-Based Herbicides:

Divergence of Regulatory Decisions

from Scientific Evidence.

 Malformations and mortality increased with dose and time

of exposure. A 2-day exposure to 3.07 mg/l glyphosate

herbicide caused only 10% mortality but caused

malformations in 55% of the test animals [4].

Scientific studies connects

Roundup to deformities.

 A toxicological study by Dallegrave et al. (2003) found that

the offspring of pregnant rats dosed with 500, 750 and

1000mg/kg Roundup on days 6 -15 after fertilization had

increased skeletal abnormalities, including at doses that

were not maternally toxic.

 Malformations consisted of the absence of bones or parts of

bones, shortened and bent bones, asymmetry, fusions, and

clefts.

 The percentage of altered fetuses increased with dose.

Effects of higher dosage of Glyphosate in pig feed(From 0.2 to >1 ppm = gram / ton)

 5 times the deformities born (cranial, spinal and legs)

 4 times more abortions

 0,95 piglets less born per litter

Accumulated exposure to Glyphosate in

feed / number of deformities born.

Major changes in Sigurd’s herds

Cows: After having had Cronic Botulism diagnosed Sigurd changed to Non-GMO soya for his cow herd. Together with other initiatives, it has dramatically enhanced the health and production of his cows.

 Sigurd is aware that Glyphosate kills beneficial stomach micro-organisms and leaves Clostridia to spread. He is also looking at probiotic micro-organisms to control Clostridia and ways of reducing Glyphosate in his feed.

 Sows and Weaners: With Sigurd’s knowledge of GMO soya and Glyphosate he no longer dares to feed his sows GMO soya. Therefore, he has changed to Non-GMO soya. This has resulted in an equally dramatic change in pig health and production figures.

 One thing that Sigurd noticed was that sows, inseminated up to two weeks before changeover and onwards, had 1 to 2 pigs more liveborn. This information indicates that there has been problems with the eggs to attaching to the lining of the fallopian tube and that toxicity, nutrient deficiency or stress could be the reason, as the eggs attach on week 3-4 after inseminating.

Sigurd says that the first priority for him is keeping his cow herd alive. He has not yet calculated the financial gain, but health and production in both herds has improved significantly.

Glyphosate is a selective

antibiotic MRSA tests in Danish pig herds

show conventional herds are ten

times more likely to be

contaminated by MRSA CC 398

than Organic herds.

 Many Organic herds are buying

breeding animals from

conventional breeders, but

organic farmers use only 1/20 of

the antibiotics for weaners that

conventional farmers use and

they do not use Glyphosate

contaminated feeds.

Danish Dairy farm 1/3 milk yield, dysbiosis in the gut,

after Probiotic was added to the feed, and especially after
