Hints and Suggestions

Plan

• Subject Report 2007:• ‘5-10 minutes writing a plan of the response is

time well spent and can aid in providing a coherent and focused answer. Students should be encouraged to include the plan within the exam answer booklet-having made sure to draw a line through the plan to indicate it is not part of the essay answer.

Questions

• Define terms which appear in the questions- not only for the sake of the examiners but in order to clarify the task at the outset.

• ‘Ideology; limited warfare’, for example, need to be explained at the outset.

• ‘Candidates too often wrote answers which were not sufficiently focused on the demands of the question.’

• Deconstruct essay titles• Identify key words• Paraphrase the essay title into a question

Knowledge and Understanding

• Understand the scope of the question• Demonstrate knowledge• Provide accurate and sufficiently detailed

information• Show evidence of reading and awareness of

other points of view

Analysis and Argument

• Respond to the question in the introduction• Have a clear and convincing line of argument• Use relevant material• Show evidence of critical thinking

Organization and Writing
