Institute of Biology IB IB conducts research at the frontiers of knowledge in synergy with production groups in Brazil and abroad. To perform this activity, the Institute has advanced laboratories and highly skilled professionals distributed across 5 departments: Animal Biology; Structural and Functional Biology; Plant Biology, Biochemistry and Tissue Biology; Genetics and Evolution; and Bioagents. New topical laboratories have contributed to doubling the built area of IB to the current 30,000 m 2 and have facilitated multidisciplinary studies with a significant social impact on tropical diseases, diabetes, obesity and pain. The sophisticated laboratory complex of the unit also includes the Genomic and Expression Laboratory and the Genomics and Proteomics Laboratory. With 60 research groups, IB has one of the highest indices of scientific production among Unicamp units: an increasing annual average of 470 articles published in indexed journals, in addition to the production of books and book chapters, patent applications and licensed software. The 7 graduate programs (master’s and PhD) of IB are recognized by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - Capes) and are renowned nationally and internationally. They cover the main areas of the biological sciences: Animal Biology; the Biosciences and Technology of Bioactive Products; Cell and Structural Biology; Ecology; Functional and Molecular Biology; Genetics and Molecular Biology; and Plant Biology. More than 3,500 theses and dissertations have been defended in the 48 years of the Institute’s existence. The unit also provides several extension and specialization programs to the community. The Institute is responsible for the undergraduate program in Biological Sciences (bachelor’s and teaching degrees), in addition to receiving students from different programs in similar fields. The education IB provides is acknowledged as one of the best educations in the country. The educational infrastructure includes, among other resources, the exceptional 22,000-volume bibliographic collection of IB library, one of the largest and most complete collections in Brazil in the area of biological and biomedical sciences. It consists of more than 147,870 exsiccates, most from the savannah and forests from the Southeastern, Central-Western and Southern regions of Brazil.

IB conducts research at the frontiers of knowledge in synergy with production groups in Brazil and abroad. To perform this activity, the Institute has advanced laboratories and highly skilled professionals distributed across 5 departments: Animal Biology; Structural and Functional Biology; Plant Biology, Biochemistry and Tissue Biology; Genetics and Evolution; and Bioagents.

New topical laboratories have contributed to doubling the built area of IB to the current 30,000 m2 and have facilitated multidisciplinary studies with a significant social impact on tropical diseases, diabetes, obesity and pain.

The zoology museum, the sound library, the Electron Microscopy Laboratory (LME) and the herbarium comprise the infrastructure of IB. The zoology museum has more than 400,000 invertebrate specimens and approximately 65,000 vertebrates preserved in a moist environment (alcohol or formalin) or through taxidermy. The collection is one of the 7 major collections in Brazil.

The sound library, incorporated in the museum, is a collection of vocalization files of animals from the Neotropical region bequeathed by the Unicamp ornithologist Jacques Vielliard. It has 40,000 animal sounds and is one of the most important collections of its kind in the world. It contains recordings of all vertebrate groups (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals) and some groups of invertebrates, such as insects and arachnids. The LME has a multiuser equipment complex that includes 2 transmission electron microscopes and one scanning electron microscope. It also has a microtomograph for small animals.

The herbarium is the second largest in the state of São Paulo with regard to angiosperms and overall one of the largest in the country. It consists of more than 147,870 exsiccates, most from the savannah and forests from the Southeastern, Central-Western and Southern regions of Brazil.
