GRA DE LEVEL NEWS

6TH GRADE - OBSERVATIONS FROM OUR SCIENTISTS

7TH GRADE - BALANCING OUR NATURAL SYSTEMSIn 7th grade science, we are well on our way into our first unit, Natural Systems. In this Unit we will explore concepts like Ecosystems, food webs, and human?s impact on the environment. two weeks ago, students built habitats for their milkweed bugs, and throughout this unit, students are having the opportunity to observe the bugs in their habitat and begin to watch them go through the life cycle.

We also have been learning about big concepts like the 8 characteristics of life, difference between population, communities, and ecosystems, and students have come up with their own examples from their lives of each of those. We are beginning to delve into food webs, and will explore food webs in our

own communities. Be sure to check-in with your student and ask them about their habitats, and what their bugs need to survive and reproduce.

Our 6th grade science students have been very busy making observations in lab and writing scientific explanations. This has included taking detailed observations during experiments, and writing a claim, evidence, and reasoning in their conclusions. We also have started learning about qualitative and quantitative observations. We read a short story about Zed to find as many qualitative and quantitative observations as possible.

Next, we made some inferences about Zed based on these observations (that Zed is an alien and he loves his vegetables!) Finally, we worked on drawing a picture of Zed based on these observations and inferences. We are looking forward to making more observations and inferences with our Mystery Powders Lab and Mystery Solutions Lab before moving on to our next topics of measurement and the metric system.

Congratulations to Isobel Kolstad, Maddie Tatum and last year?s 8th grader Ava Lindquist on their State Fair Art and Technology Submissions!
