Course Overview Mind Merge, Inc’s renowned Intensive Business English Course is geared towards working professionals with basic, intermediate or advanced level English skills.

Our course is designed to help participants advance their executive English communication competency and succeed in today’s business world. Taught by a certified native trainer, our courses will be customized to your needs and can be designed to address specific problem areas. The content will also be fully tailored to address participant's everyday English language needs based on their job-specific language and vocabulary. Our main focus during Business English training will be to help participants improve a full range of communication skills in order to function more effectively at work. IBEC® will include the following topics:

- Technical & General Writing - Oral Communication - English Vocabulary and Grammar - Accent Reduction and Pronunciation - Visual Pronunciation Software

How will the course be conducted? At MindMerge we understand your immediate, job-specific language needs which will help you start your path to improve your staff’s English skills immediately:

First, a thorough Training Needs Analysis (TNA) will be conducted to obtain your staff’s individual goals, learning styles and training needs. The assessment will include individual interviews with the participants, written assessment tests and analysis of their emails & other communications. This will ensure that your Business English course is fully customized and tailored to your specific language needs.

Based on your assessment result, an ELT qualified trainer will be assigned to you. All of our trainers are career professionals with ten to twenty years of English training experience. They are the best in the industry!

Your course hours will be set to accommodate your schedule and the location will be based on your preferences (at your office location or at MindMerge’s training facility)

Your trainer will be entirely focused on teaching you appropriate English for professionals, thereby monitoring your staff’s progress and adjusting the pace of the course. The trainer will also send monthly progress reports to the management.

Visual Pronunciation Software will be installed on your local server for the registered candidates to practice spoken English at their convenience. The state of the art software’s core speech recognition technology provides the ability to analyze learners' speech and provide feedback to the user that is detailed and meaningful to improve their English. Management can also check individual performance and improvement statistics through the software.

IBEC® Program Details

Assessment: The assessment will be done by Mr. Alan Hood. After the assessment the exact syllabus and training materials will be specified.

The assessment will approximately take two days to complete. The assessment report will be forwarded to your management after a further three days.

Level 3 is designed to help students develop their intermediate English language skills so that they can begin experimenting with speaking, reading, writing, and listening.

Segment One

INTEGRATED SKILLS COURSE

TEXTBOOK: TBA

COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Participate in most routine social conversations and talk about needs and familiar topics of personal relevance. 2. Understand simple exchanges, common daily instructions, direct questions about familiar topics, routine media announcements, etc. 3. Understand the purpose, main ideas, and some detail in some authentic 2-3 paragraph texts. 4. Effectively convey an opinion, feeling, or experience in a simple paragraph. 5. Write short letters and notes on a familiar topic. 6. Use and understand a range of common everyday vocabulary. 7. Use a variety of simple structures and some complex ones when speaking. 8. Effectively communicate basic needs in a culturally appropriate manner.

Segment Two

ACTIVE LISTENING COURSE

COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Participate with some effort in routine social conversations. 2. Talk with confidence about needs and familiar topics of personal relevance. 3. Show relatively fluent and connected speech. 4. Follow very broadly the gist of oral communication between native speakers in more demanding contexts (e.g. radio broadcasts, formal conversations, etc.) 5. Catch the main point in short, clear, simple messages. 6. Show a range of common everyday vocabulary.

Level 4 is designed to help students develop and solidify their intermediate language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing English.

Segment One

INTEGRATED SKILLS COURSE

COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Communicate with some confidence in casual social conversations and in some less routine situations on familiar topics. 2. Communicate facts and ideas in some detail. 3. Follow the main ideas and identify key words and important details in verbal communication and in other contexts (such as audio tapes, radio broadcasts, and face to face conversations). 4. Follow main ideas, key words, and important details in a one-page plain-language authentic text. 5. Get new information about familiar topics by reading factual texts. 6. Write 1-2 paragraph letters and compositions. 7. Use and understand a range of common everyday vocabulary, some common phrases, and idioms.

ACTIVE LISTENING COURSE

COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Communicate in unprepared casual social conversations and in some less routine situations with some confidence. 2. Communicate facts and ideas in some detail. 3. Give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. 4. Narrate a story or relate a plot, and describe your own reactions. 5. Participate in informal conversations involving problem solving and decision making. 6. Understand the main ideas and identify key words and important details in a moderately

demanding conversation. 7. Demonstrate and understand a range of common everyday vocabulary, some common phrases, and idioms. 8. Understand the main points of many radio or TV programs.

Level 5 is focused on developing your fluency and accuracy abilities, and to helping you reach a level of competence that will allow you to interact with a variety of more challenging, sophisticated current topics.

Segment One

INTEGRATED SKILLS COURSE

COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Communicate effectively in most daily practical and social situations at both concrete and abstract levels. 2. Participate in formal and informal conversations involving problem solving and decision making. 3. Speak on familiar concrete topics at a descriptive level and present a detailed analysis or comparison. 4. Participate in conversations with confidence. 5. Demonstrate an increased ability to respond appropriately to the formality level of a social interaction. 6. Understand more complex indirect questions about personal experience, familiar topics, and general knowledge. 7. Follow main ideas, key words, and important details in an authentic 2-3 page text on a familiar and partially predictable topic. 8. Read in English for information, to learn the language and to develop reading skills. Also begin to read very simple adult fiction. 9. Write coherent paragraphs on familiar topics with clear main ideas and some supporting details. Develop a sense of audience. 10. Demonstrate mostly satisfactory control over complex structures, spelling, and mechanics. 11. Use and understand an expanded inventory of concrete and common idiomatic language.

Understand important details in oral communication. 6. Follow most formal and informal general conversations. Use and understand an expanded inventory of concrete and common idiomatic language.

Business Writing Skills

This segment will focus on developing the written communication skills of the candidates. SECTION ONE: EXTERNAL DOCUMENTS 1. Letters - start and finish These tools will help you improve your letters. They guide you through the planning stage and help you to write suitable opening and closing paragraphs. 2. Letters responding to enquiries These tools will help you write effective letters in response to an enquiry. 3. Letters that sell These tools will help you write sales letters that appeal directly to the potential buyer. 4. Letters that achieve action These tools will help you write letters that demand action from any organisation or individual. 5. Letters in response to complaints This tool will give you practice at writing complaints before you become involved in responding on behalf of your organisation. 6. Letters that have only one or two sentences These tools will help you write letters that are difficult because they are so short. 7. Standard letters (that don't sound standard) These tools demonstrate good practice in writing standard letters and offer the chance to develop personal writing skills. 8. Writing a press release You should use this tool when you: · are new to writing press releases; · want to ensure that your press releases are presented in a way which will encourage their use. SECTION TWO: INTERNAL DOCUMENTS 9. Memos, e-mail, fax or messages These tools will help you improve the quality of your written communication with colleagues.

10. Reports These tools will help you write business reports. 11. Paperwork for presentations You should use these tools when you are: · new to giving presentations; · are tempted to just give copies of OHTs. If you are responsible for the development of staff within your organisation or department: · use the tools as handouts or the basis of an exercise on - presentation skills courses. 12. Evaluation These tools provide a selection of evaluation forms for use in different circumstances. 13. Course handouts These tools will help you develop effective handouts that present an appropriate image of you as a trainer. 14. Agendas The agenda forms the structure for a meeting and the basis for the minutes. It is essential that it is well constructed and these five tools will help achieve that through explanation and examples. The tools will help you to understand the purpose for the different sections of the agenda and to write one that is useful. 15. Minutes The tools will help you to: · decide on, and use the most appropriate style for your minutes; · present minutes in a concise and professional style; · following the conventions for presenting each section; · show decisions and actions clearly. 16. Posters These tools will help you prepare posters that draw attention and inform readers. 17. The internal CV These tools will help you to put together a well-structured, appropriate CV if you are applying for posts under internal reorganisation. They are a combination of reference material and practical exercises, culminating in step-by-step guidance on putting together your CV. 18. Appraisal notes These tools will help you prepare notes for an appraisal meeting and keep a useful record of discussions. 19. Writing procedures

These tools will help you write economically and clearly.

These tools will help you improve your writing through the use of plain English. They will also develop your understanding of other people's writing through easy identification of potential misunderstandings.

SECTION FOUR: GENERAL

24. Planning

You should use this tool when you are:

· new to writing reports and longer documents;

· aware of wasting time editing and restructuring;

· having trouble getting started on a document.

If you are responsible for the development of staff within your organisation or department:

· give a copy of the tool to any member of staff who would benefit from help with planning documents;

· use the tool as a handout on training courses.

25. Spelling

These tools are a source of reference to help with common spelling problems and get you started on improving your spelling.

26. Vocabulary

These tools will help you improve and develop your vocabulary and find the right word for the purpose.

27. Conventions for typed documents

These tools will help you ensure that your letters and reports are clear from the point of view of presentation. The importance of layout and presentation should not be overlooked as they form the all-important first impression and help easy reading.

28. Diction

You should use this tool when you:

· are new to dictating;

· feel you should respond to your secretary's comments!

29. A glossary of grammar

You should use the tool:

· whenever you want to check on the meaning of a frequently used grammatical term;

· when you want to improve your knowledge of grammar.
