2 IBM and Siemens PLM Software

    Working together to enable

a new kind ofinnovationWhen IBM developed its vision of a smarter planet, it saw

the potential of pervasive data and connectivity to transform

the world in a positive way everything from cities to private

enterprise and from devices to the way in which they are man-

ufactured. That vision is becoming real in this era of big data

and hyperconnectivity. People and organizations are leveraging

information in fresh ways and collaborating more eectively

than ever before, using new tools.

Businesses around the world rely heavily on the ability to bring

people, processes and information together. Thats the key to

getting innovative products and services to market faster while

using fewer resources. For manufacturers and developers of

complex technology-based products such as mechatronics sys-

tems with embedded software, a new generation of integrated

product lifecycle management (PLM) solutions provides the

means to achieve this new, more agile kind of innovation and

thats where the team of IBM and Siemens PLM Software

    (Siemens) comes in.

Today, leading PLM consultant firms1 place IBM as the leader

in PLM services. With decades of experience in technology

and business transformation, IBM has devoted extensive

resources to research and thought leadership. The result is

improved business outcomes for clients and something more

IBM is helping to redefine the way the world literally works.

At the same time, Siemens has earned the top ranking in the

fastest-growing product lifecycle management market segment

for 11 straight years.2 With IBM technology and supporting

services, the Siemens Teamcenter PLM platform makes prod-

uct innovation a strategic, enterprisewide collaborative eort,

fully integrating it into the business.

The two companies have formed a mutually supportive global

relationship with the goal of helping joint clients work smarter

by breaking down technology, process and information silos.

Its about helping information and ideas to flow freely andunlock the creativity of business professionals in all parts of

    theorganization.

The value of a strong teamThe strength of the IBM and Siemens relationship is grounded

in its complementary nature. IBM has proven excellence in

systems, software and services a portfolio backed by real-

world knowledge and experience in building technology- and

information-based solutions thatwork. Siemens oers focused

expertise and class-leading PLM platforms, with a deep under-

standing of the entire product lifecycle and how it operates

    across the whole value chain.

IBM and Siemens approach customers business challenges

holistically, looking beyond the PLM platform and its support-

ing infrastructure. IBM and Siemens can address every aspect

of the enterprise from strategic goals to operational details.

Its an end-to-end solution that spans everything from funda-

mental strategy to business processes, workflow management,

enterprise systems integration, partner interaction and more.

With IBM and Siemens, clients get a coordinated, collabora-

tive team with the dedicated knowledge and experience needed

to produce optimal business outcomes. By sharing knowledge

and working closely together on product development and

tuning, the two companies take advantage of one anothers

strengths to provide tailored solutions faster and more eec-

tively. It may be Siemens and IBM Global Business Services

professionals working together to deliver industry-specific

expertise, products that are certified and optimized for oneanother, or value-added services such as IBM Global Financing.

    Integrated PLM means smarter

productdevelopmentTo remain competitive today, businesses must find new and

more ecient ways to innovate. In a climate of ongoing eco-

nomic challenge, productivity has become the prime focus. Its

about much more than eciency and cost cutting, however.

    Quality must improve as well.

Any company that can optimize its operations to work more

eectively than its peers can gain a significant competitive

advantage. It will be able to bring new products and services

to market faster, responding to its customers better without

    increasing costs.

In most enterprises, complexity and collaboration challenges

stand in the way of innovation. IT systems and business pro-

cesses are complicated and not well integrated. Information is

siloed and the intelligence locked inside data may go untapped.

In a product management environment, there may be multi-

ple development technologies and data models, inconsistent

databases and user interfaces. The overall picture is one ofinflexibility and opaqueness.

Siemens solutions, in combination with complementary

software, hardware and services from IBM, enable seamless

integration of product development and management func-

tions across the enterprise and with external partners. This

helps create an environment in which individual systems and

processes are combined into a unified ecosystem. Designers

are connected to procurement managers directly, so they know

if a proposed change in materials will fall within budget.

Factory managers and engineers are able to collaborate to opti-mize a new product for both function and manufacturability.

Corporate management has a window into the entire product

lifecycle that helps executives make decisions about future

direction faster and with greater confidence.

IBM and Siemens enable a smarter approach to product

    development built on:

Information management and integrated analytics that tap

large volumes of complex data to generate the real-time

insight that users require to make accurate decisions.

Proven, agile architectures that integrate with existing

systems to protect investments, minimize the cost of owner-ship and help the business take advantage of change.

Improved collaboration capabilites that break down

organizational and technological barriers, helping to ensure

everyone gets information in the form best suited to their

job in the simplest, fastest way possible. Seamless enterprise integration that aligns PLM with

business processes and strategies, and delivers capabilities

    eciently through cloud-based infrastructures.

The total solution is built on a combination of Siemens PLM

applications, and software, infrastructure and services from

IBM. These components dovetail to create an innovation capa-

bility that is deeply integrated with the enterprise as a whole.

Siemens Teamcenter: The heart of our solutions

Part of a portfolio that includes powerful CAD-CAM-CAE

and manufacturing solutions, the Siemens Teamcenter PLM

platform is a modular, service-oriented suite that addresses allaspects of product development and lifecycle management.

Its unified architecture and open connectivity enable it to inte-

grate with a diverse range of data sources, external tools and

    enterprise systems.

Teamcenter gives customers a reliable, centralized source

of trusted design, product and process data a single, consis-

tent version of the truth that serves a reference standard

for all parts of the enterprise and value chain. This greatly

increases eciency while also eliminating many potential

    sources oferror.

Due to its modular nature, it is possible for Teamcenter to

be configured as needed to interact with the customers legacy

systems, if needed. It is not necessary to rip and replace all

existing solutions to get the benefits of Teamcenter integration

However, a full Teamcenter implementation oers optimized

tools and resources for professionals across the enterprise. A

full move to Teamcenter can reduce complexity, simplify man-

    agement and lower costs.

For example, when creating a new product that encompasses

both hardware and software, the two development eorts are

normally separated, using dierent tool sets. With Teamcenter,

software assets are managed as part of a single view of the

product as a whole. Physical product changes that may require

software rework are immediately shared and vice versa. Thats

the beauty of a unified platform.

    Siemens Teamcenter: End-to-end PLM

Every part of the innovation process is addressed

    by Teamcenter:

    Systems engineering and requirements management

    Portfolio, program and project management

    Engineering process management

    Bill-of-materials management

    Compliance management

    Content and document management

    Formula, package and brand management

IBM infrastructure: The operational backboneof SiemensPLMSiemens Teamcenter is fully certified for IBM PureSystems.TM

This family of expert systems is integrated by design for faster

deployment and reduced risk. With conventional hardware,

extensive configuration, integration and management activity is

required to get the optimal infrastructure in place. In contrast,

all PureSystems are pre-configured and optimized, delivering

a simplified experience for IT departments. This means muchless eort and expense, with no compromise on performance

    or capability.

IBM PureSystems is an excellent building block for client-

managed private and hybrid public-private cloud deployments

that simplify access to the PLM platform for employees

wherever they may be. By combining PureSystems with IBM

SmartCloud Foundation, clients enjoy a head start on creating

their own clouds, through a packaged solution that incorpo-

rates key middleware and management tools.

Teamcenter is also supported by IBM SmartCloudTMEnterprise+ managed cloud service oerings. This powerful

delivery technology oers the choice of a globally accessible,

secure infrastructure as a service or a fully managed IT and

middleware platform as a service. A managed cloud infra-

structure using the latest technology helps protect investments

and avoid obsolescence while, at the same time, retains full

control over the application and database environment. IBM

SmartCloud Enterprise+ simplifies application and workload

management, performance optimization, security and usage

metering. IT administration becomes much more streamlined

and productive, enabling the business to become more agile.

IBM Sterling and IBM ILOG supply chain management

IBM software: Enriching the capabilitiesof SiemensPLMsolutionsThe technology supporting and surrounding the PLM

platform is vitally important. IBM provides all the necessary

components, from infrastructure oerings to critical middle-

ware and database software. Thats what provides the basis forPLM integration and extensibility across the enterprise.

Siemens has partnered with IBM to oer Teamcenter precon-

figured for and bundled with a customizable set of key IBM

software and middleware oerings. This packaged approach,

called the IBM Blue Stack, greatly speeds time-to-value for

new deployments while reducing implementation risk.

Core components include the award-winning IBM DB2

database and IBM WebSphere Application Server. DB2 is

highly secure, storage-ecient and oers outstanding perfor-

mance to improve productivity while reducing cost and risk.

It can also be leveraged as the database for the clients enter-

prise systems, providing better use of IT investments and

further reducing complexity. WebSphere Application Server

allows simple access to Teamcenter data and functionality via

the enterprise network and through the web, with full supportfor clouddeployments.

IBM Tivoli products make the PLM platform and its admin-

istration more ecient, reducing administrator workload

and reducing the cost of operations. Tivoli Access Manager

provides secure, automated, policy-based management of

user accounts and passwords. It spans systems and platforms,

enabling single-sign-in at the enterprise level to make the

users interaction seamless. Tivoli Storage Manager transpar-

ently manages diverse storage resources, optimizing utilization

for higher data availability. This keeps productivity high and

    costslow.

IBM software also complements Teamcenter with enhanced

functionality for product development and collaboration.

Rational ClearCase, for example, oers complete software

configuration management. It provides sophisticated version

control, workspace management and parallel development

support to improve productivity. Developers around the world

can work together in real-time, or take a snapshot view and

work independently. ClearCase allows developers to store

software with the mechanical, electronic and electric design

definition of the product in Teamcenter to ensure that all

changes are carried forward without error or version issues.

    Both are extremely customer-focused

organizations that execute well on theirvision...this alliance [could] acceleratethe adoption of PLM as a product man-agement strategy, giving organizations

greater agility and fidelity in product-wide analytic and decisionmaking.
