All Cognos BI Reporting components on one computerYou can install all the IBM Cognos Business Intelligence components on onecomputer. Choose this option for proof-of-concept or demonstration environmentswhere the user load is small.

Because the gateway must be located with the Web server, the single computermust also be running a web server.

The IBM Cognos Business Intelligence gateway and the IBM Cognos AdaptiveAnalytics gateway provide 32-bit libraries, whether you install on a 64-bit server ora 32-bit server. Some web servers, such as the Apache web server, cannot load a32-bit compiled library in a 64-bit compiled server. In that situation, install the32-bit version of the gateways on a 32-bit web server.

Cognos BI Reporting components on different computersWhen you install IBM Cognos Business Intelligence Reporting, you specify whereto install the gateway, application tier components, and Content Manager. Youmust install IBM Cognos Adaptive Analytics, which includes a gateway, presentation tier, and application tier, in the same location as a Cognos BIReporting component. You must install the Cognos Adaptive Analyticspresentation tier on each computer where IBM Cognos BI application tiercomponent is installed. You must install Cognos Adaptive Analytics applicationtier on only one computer in a distributed environment.

Note: If a compatible version of IBM Cognos Business Intelligence is alreadyinstalled in your environment, the Cognos BI Reporting components are alreadyavailable and it is not necessary to install them.

You can install Cognos BI Reporting using one of these options:v Install the gateway on a different computer.

In this option, the gateway and web server are on one computer, and theremaining IBM Cognos components are on other computers. For example, you may have hundreds of reports, packages, public folders, andapplications in your environment. However, it is not uncommon to find that anumber of applications are not used, or no longer meet the company'srequirements, or do not work in the existing environment.

Conduct an audit of your applications content to determine what should beupgraded. Assessing and reducing the number of objects is a useful exercise. Donot rely only on user feedback to determine which content is used.

An audit of your existing applications may include the following.v Review the lists of content that has changed since the last release to determine

which objects to upgrade. For more information, see the user guide for yourapplication.

v Do a site survey.A survey will help you to assess the current production environment andidentify areas that require attention during an upgrade. The site survey shouldinclude information about the infrastructure, applications, users, andconfiguration settings for your IBM Cognos products.

v Assess the software that you use in your reporting application by doing thefollowing.– List software, such as operating systems, web servers, security, databases, and

so on.– Compare the list to the supported versions for your target upgrade version,

available from the IBM Customer Center (http://www-01.ibm.com/software/data/cognos/customercenter/).

– Determine whether any other components require updating.v List your applications, including the following.

– IBM Cognos Adaptive Warehouse models and packages.– IBM Cognos Adaptive Analytics reports.

v Complete a detailed assessment of your applications. The usage, age, size, and complexity of your applications are important factorsto consider when planning the upgrade. The total size of the applications mayhave an impact on the time required to complete the upgrade.

v List all the reports contained in your application and complete the followingtasks.– Interview the team members to see which content is needed and used, and

which can be eliminated. Use audit report data to determine report usage.Upgrade only the reports that work and that users need and use. Thisreduces the number of applications that you must upgrade. For more information about audit reports, see the IBM Cognos BusinessIntelligence Administration and Security Guide.

– Flag loads and reports that fail to run or validate in the current environment. They are unlikely to upgrade successfully. Repair these reports so that theyupgrade.

v List the following information about your configuration.– Configuration settings that you enabled using IBM Cognos Configuration.

These settings are preserved through the upgrade. They are stored incogstartup.xml and coglocale.xml.

– Changes to other configuration files.

Chapter 11. Troubleshooting

This section provides solutions for problems you may encounter when installingIBM Cognos Analytic Applications

Troubleshooting a problemTroubleshooting is a systematic approach to solving a problem. The goal oftroubleshooting is to determine why something does not work as expected andhow to resolve the problem.

The first step in the troubleshooting process is to describe the problem completely.Problem descriptions help you and the IBM technical-support representative knowwhere to start to find the cause of the problem. This step includes asking yourselfbasic questions:v What are the symptoms of the problem?v Where does the problem occur?v When does the problem occur?v Under which conditions does the problem occur?v Can the problem be reproduced?

The answers to these questions typically lead to a good description of the problem, which can then lead to problem resolution.

What are the symptoms of the problem?

When starting to describe a problem, the most obvious question is What is theproblem? This question might seem straightforward; however, you can break itdown into several more focused questions that create a more descriptive picture ofthe problem. These questions can include:v Who, or what, is reporting the problem?v What are the error codes and messages?v How does the system fail? For example, is it a loop, hang, crash, performance

degradation, or incorrect result?

Where does the problem occur?

Determining where the problem originates is not always easy, but it is one of themost important steps in resolving a problem. Many layers of technology can existbetween the reporting and failing components. Networks, disks, and drivers areonly a few of the components to consider when you are investigating problems.

The following questions help you to focus on where the problem occurs to isolatethe problem layer:v Is the problem specific to one platform or operating system, or is it common

across multiple platforms or operating systems?v Is the current environment and configuration supported?

If one layer reports the problem, the problem does not necessarily originate in thatlayer. Part of identifying where a problem originates is understanding the

environment in which it exists. Take some time to completely describe the problemenvironment, including the operating system and version, all correspondingsoftware and versions, and hardware information. Confirm that you are runningwithin an environment that is a supported configuration; many problems can betraced back to incompatible levels of software that are not intended to run togetheror have not been fully tested together.

When does the problem occur?

Develop a detailed timeline of events leading up to a failure, especially for thosecases that are one-time occurrences. You can most easily develop a timeline byworking backward: Start at the time an error was reported (as precisely as possible, even down to the millisecond), and work backward through the available logs andinformation. Typically, you need to look only as far as the first suspicious eventthat you find in a diagnostic log.

To develop a detailed timeline of events, answer these questions:v Does the problem happen only at a certain time of day or night?v How often does the problem happen?v What sequence of events leads up to the time that the problem is reported?v Does the problem happen after an environment change, such as upgrading or

installing software or hardware?

Responding to these types of questions can give you a frame of reference in whichto investigate the problem.

Under which conditions does the problem occur?

Knowing which systems and applications are running at the time that a problemoccurs is an important part of troubleshooting. These questions about yourenvironment can help you to identify the root cause of the problem:v Does the problem always occur when the same task is being performed?v Does a certain sequence of events need to occur for the problem to surface?v Do any other applications fail at the same time?

Answering these types of questions can help you explain the environment inwhich the problem occurs and correlate any dependencies. Remember that justbecause multiple problems might have occurred around the same time, theproblems are not necessarily related.

Can the problem be reproduced?

From a troubleshooting standpoint, the ideal problem is one that can bereproduced. Typically, when a problem can be reproduced you have a larger set oftools or procedures at your disposal to help you investigate. Consequently, problems that you can reproduce are often easier to debug and solve. However, problems that you can reproduce can have a disadvantage: If the problem is ofsignificant business impact, you do not want it to recur. If possible, recreate theproblem in a test or development environment, which typically offers you moreflexibility and control during your investigation.v Can the problem be recreated on a test system?v Are multiple users or applications encountering the same type of problem?

66 IBM Cognos Analytic Applications Version 10.1.0: Installation and Configuration Guide

Page 73: IBM CognosAnalyticApplications Version 10.1public.dhe.ibm.com/software/data/cognos/documentation/docs/en/1… · Cognos Adaptive Warehouse and Cognos BI Reporting on different computers

v Can the problem be recreated by running a single command, a set of commands,or a particular application?

Searching knowledge basesYou can often find solutions to problems by searching IBM knowledge bases. Youcan optimize your results by using available resources, support tools, and searchmethods.

About this task

You can find useful information by searching the information center for IBMCognos Analytic Applications, but sometimes you need to look beyond theinformation center to answer your questions or resolve problems. To searchknowledge bases for information that you need, use one or more of the followingapproaches:

Procedure1. Find the content that you need by using the IBM Support Portal, at

http://ibm.com/cognos/support. The IBM Support Portal is a unified, centralized view of all technical support tools and information for all IBMsystems, software, and services. The IBM Support Portal lets you access theIBM electronic support portfolio from one place. You can tailor the pages tofocus on the information and resources that you need for problem preventionand faster problem resolution. Familiarize yourself with the IBM Support Portalby viewing the demo videos about this tool. These videos introduce you to theIBM Support Portal, explore troubleshooting and other resources, anddemonstrate how you can tailor the page by moving, adding, and deletingportlets.

2. Search for content by using the IBM Support Assistant (ISA). ISA is a no-chargesoftware serviceability workbench that helps you answer questions and resolveproblems with IBM software products. You can find instructions fordownloading and installing ISA on the IBM Support portal.

3. Search for content about IBM Cognos Analytic Applications by using one of thefollowing additional technical resources:v IBM Cognos Analytic Applications 10.1.0 technotes and APARs (problem

reports), which are accessible through the Support Portal.v IBM Cognos Analytic Applications Support Web sitev IBM Cognos Analytic Applications support communities (forums and

newsgroups)4. Search for content by using the IBM masthead search. You can use the IBM

masthead search by typing your search string into the Search field at the top ofany ibm.com® page. This will search for matching content on the IBM Web site. Therefore, specific searches that include the product name may provide betterresults.

5. Search for content by using any external search engine. If you use an externalsearch engine, your results are more likely to include information that isoutside the ibm.com domain. However, sometimes you can find usefulproblem-solving information about IBM products in news groups, forums, andblogs that are not on ibm.com. If you wish to limit your search results tocontent found on the IBM Web site while using an external search engine, usethe site:ibm.com filter within your search query, which works for all majorsearch engines.
