Business Challenge With no means to trace defective parts to the subset of vehicles affected by

them, auto manufacturers have—as a matter of safety—followed a sweeping

approach in which vehicles of entire model years are recalled. A consortium of

German automakers, suppliers, software companies and academia and

began a project known as LAENDmarKS to gain the ability to track and trace

at the parts level with a high degree of precision, from the point of assembly

all the way back to second- and third-tier suppliers.

Solution Brought into the project by consortium member IBS AG, IBM helped design

and implement an open, secure parts tracking solution that enables parts

traceability at all levels of the supply chain. Using sensors, parts are uniquely

identified and captured at strategic points in the supply chain. IBM’s

breakthrough was to apply an SOA-based approach under which supply chain

data was abstracted into a separate event repository—independent of

applications—that could be tapped for multiple purposes.

Benefits Improved parts traceability enables automobile manufacturers and suppliers to target their recalls to specific vehicles affected by defects

Expected major reduction in costs associated with vehicle recalls through more precise tracking of parts across the automobile value chain

Improved decision-making in the area of production, inventory and logistics due to increased supply chain transparency

―Giving customers the

information they need to optimize

their travel plans is the direction

that the smart cities in the world

are going. IBM is helping us to

make our vision a reality.‖

— Phil Mumford, CEO,

Queensland Motorways

Business Challenge

Ten years ago, Australia’s third-largest city and the state capital of Queensland, Brisbane, formulated a strategy for making itself an economic powerhouse. At some point, however, Brisbane reached a crossover point where its population growth began to exert an adverse impact in the form of traffic congestion. Queensland Motorways, which runs Brisbane’s major toll roads and bridges, sought a way to minimize the traffic congestion and help keep Brisbane from choking on its success.

Solution

Queensland Motorways worked with IBM to develop an intelligent Central System for tolling. As vehicles drive under toll gantries, license plates are captured by cameras and decoded via OCR engines. A key part of IBM’s solution, known as the Identification, Rating and Interoperability Services (IRIS) subsystem, picks up the information generated at the roadside and uses stored business logic to execute a series of toll-related transactions, including calculating and sending the bill to the customer.

Benefits

Captured vehicle data provides the foundation for targeted and flexible traffic

shaping capability while embedded business intelligence capabilities enable the

creation of travel profiles for each customer

Reduces congestion during peak traffic hours and improves the travel experience

for Brisbane's commuters

Increased revenue opportunities for Queensland Motorways, providing a strong

basis for funding future road infrastructure initiatives

— Silvester Prakasam, Director

of Fare Systems, Singapore Land

Transport Authority

Business Challenge

With its population growing, Singapore’s Land Transport Authority

(LTA) needed a way to head off traffic congestion and maintain its

world-class business climate.

Solution

The LTA worked with IBM to develop a flexible, open and unified

fare processing system that integrates all modes of public transport.

Murray Goulburn boosts performance with a virtualized IBM Power Systems environment for new and existing SAP software applications

Business Challenge Dairy producer Murray Goulburn needed faster and more reliable business reporting across its nine manufacturing sites in Australia. Its existing Sun Microsystems servers had reached their processing performance limits, and data storage devices had reached capacity. These technical issues prevented Murray Goulburn from introducing new applications or from adding users, which constrained business operations.

Solution

Murray Goulburn migrated from seven Sun servers to a single IBM Power Systems server. The single IBM server, running the IBM AIX operating system, was divided into virtual servers to provide environments for the existing SAP applications and for the introduction of SAP NetWeaver Business Intelligence Accelerator software. IBM handled the migration, system sizing, database migration and solution implementation.

Benefits

Cut processing times from hours to minutes

Lowered software licensing costs by reducing CPUs

from 26 to 4

Lowered real estate, maintenance and support, end energy costs by

consolidating to a single IBM server

Demonstrations, IBM

Business challenge

IBM DEMOcentral provides a showcase for companies to view IBM products

in action. In 2006, the number of demonstrations IBM DEMOcentral delivered

skyrocketed from 100,000 to 600,000. However, the organization’s datacenter

in Dallas could not support this rapid growth. It reached maximum capacity,

running out of power, floor space and cooling capacity, and staff could not

meet the demands of customers and prospects.

Benefits

Reduced energy consumption by 25% percent while supporting a 150%

capacity increase

Increased data center reliability and availability by integrating power and

facilities metrics with business service knowledge

Reduced time to manage environment and required less specialized skills,

decreasing operational costs

IBM DEMOcentral Reducing energy consumption by 25%

Solution

DEMOcentral deployed a dynamic infrastructure that flexibly, securely and

quickly responds to business needs. As a result, the team increased the

number of demos delivered from 600,000 in 2006 to 1.5 million in 2008

without a significant increase in staff or IT resources. With IBM Service

Management solutions for Green IT, staff has visibility into energy usage and

its impact on service delivery to improve energy efficiency and help staff to

deliver services cost-effectively and reliably.

Business challenge

During the time IBM needed a consolidated technology and innovation

data center, the company was emphasizing greater environmental

sensitivity enterprisewide. The data center was plagued with inefficient

power use, legacy cooling technology and underutilized servers: all short-

comings of its 1990s-era distributed computing model. By 2007, IBM

needed capacity and wanted to build an eco-friendly innovation center.

Solution In only ten months, IBM transformed an existing data center into an

environmentally friendly, state-of-the-art IT facility. It features expanded

processing power, enhanced cooling capabilities and advanced energy

management. IBM engineers created and executed detailed renovation

and migration plans to smoothly transform the data center while it

remained in service.

To support its global operations, Volkswagen has a corporate data center with three server

locations in Wolfsburg. A subset of 76 standalone competitive UNIX servers with different

web application middleware was hosted there. Using these servers, several Volkswagen

applications were pieced together on their own distinct systems. These were difficult to scale

as needed, driving up maintenance costs and lowering efficiency. Volkswagen was

determined to find a more manageable and scalable underlying hardware and software

solution capable of enabling it to reduce total cost of ownership while boosting

competitiveness.

Solution

IBM Global Technology Services and IBM Global Business Services helped Volkswagen

consolidate from 76 servers down to six System p5 570 servers (running IBM AIX and Red

Hat Linux) and the migration of 77 web based applications. IBM also helped standardize the

company’s operational processes and WebSphere middleware stack, helping boost

efficiency and lower costs for the automaker. The AIX-based LPARs (Logical Partitions) are

clustered with IBM High Availability Cluster Multiprocessing (HACMP) software, helping

Volkswagen to secure availability within their middleware infrastructure.

Groupe Mutuel Putting a premium on business flexibility by redesigning core processes

Business challenge

To achieve its goal of becoming number one in the Swiss health insurance market,

Groupe Mutuel needed to become more flexible and cost efficient — but without

changing the decentralized structure that is a pillar of its

business model.

Solution

Groupe Mutuel worked with IBM to map the key components of its business

processes as a prelude to redesigning them. To support these new processes, the

company built an SOA-based infrastructure that enables the reuse of services

across all 14 of its business units. By enabling the optimization of core processes

across the entire business — while maintaining each business unit’s unique market

identity — Groupe Mutuel’s new SOA enables the company’s operational efficiency

to catch up with its rapid growth.

―Our unique business model has

been a big part of our rapid growth

and success. By making our

systems and business processes

more flexible, IBM has helped us to

evolve that business model to make

Business Challenge

The Need:

German winemaker Rotkäppchen-Mumm Sektkellereien needed to integrate the

recently acquired Eckes Spirituosen & Wein into its central SAP ERP landscape.

With a broader product range and a larger volume of products after the

acquisition, the winery needed to increase sales forecast accuracy, customer

profitability analysis and planning.

The Solution:

Working with IBM Global Technology Services, the company upgraded its IBM i

environment and deployed a suite of IBM Cognos software. The software

provides monthly rolling forecasts and real-time analytics. Ultimately, point-of-

sale and market research data will be captured and integrated to provide almost

continuous rolling sales and production planning forecasts.

What Makes it Smarter:

Feeds business results back into the sales forecasting tool for the next monthly

rolling forecast, generating a positive feedback cycle to optimize business

performance

Captures data from point-of-sale devices, barcode scanners and market

research from external vendors

Extracts data to create forecasts, distributes data to production sites and

SEA Aereoporti di Milano Intelligent loyalty program improves passenger service and airport experience

The need:

SEA, the company that manages the Milan Airport, wanted to improve passengers’

experience in the airport. By improving services such as faster check-in and seat

assignment, passengers would have more time to spend in the shopping area.

The solution:

SEA worked with IBM to implement SEAMI, a customer experience and airport

loyalty program. It provides a personalized passenger experience throughout the

Milan Airport. The program is administered via a membership card, read by RFID

readers in the airport. The system automatically loads customer purchase data,

allowing customer segmentation, customer spending analysis and traffic

management analysis.

What makes it smarter:

Enables SEA to target passengers/members with specific marketing promotions

and opportunities based on the data analysis provided by the system

Can be used to manage retailers and rents based on traffic information gathered

from readers throughout the airport

Provides personalized service and benefits to passengers/members, immediately

and transparently, thanks to the RFID technology behind the solution

The Need Elie Tahari had its order, sales, inventory and financial data dispersed across the

company, making it difficult for managers to quickly access data needed to make

critical business decisions. Managers couldn't identify products in greatest

demand, resulting in warehouses overstocked with less-popular items, with hot

items on back order.

The Solution Using IBM Cognos BI 8 to front end to its centralized data warehouse, IBM

Cognos Framework Manager to model interrelated data, and IBM Cognos 8 Event

Studio for bursting sales performance reports, Elie Tahari implements new BI

system built on IBM technology. Elie Tahari may now create new intelligence by

presenting a unified view of all information available in different systems, which

can then be put to use for smarter decisions around market demand and specific

customer needs.

What Makes it Smarter

Improves visibility into business activity, enabling deeper insight into customer

needs

Targeting of new customers and better inventory forecasting

North American Nutrition Companies, Inc. North American Nutrition Companies, Inc. nourishes expansion with SAP software and IBM System i servers

The need:

Growing from a single company to a multi-brand group of companies, North

American Nutrition Companies, Inc. (NANCO) wished to take advantage of

economies of scale. To achieve this goal, new SAP software would help the

company integrate and consolidate its information management, but the existing IT

infrastructure was not well suited to scale up to meet the business objectives.

The solution:

NANCO selected an IBM System i server, model 550, for its SAP applications, and

moved its existing server into backup and disaster recovery roles. Multiple logical

partitions (LPARs) allow NANCO to host all the operating companies on the same

physical server, and allow real-time data mirroring to provide continuous protection

from disaster.

The benefits:

Response times have been reduced from 1.5s to 0.3s, boosting productivity for

more than 200 users.

Low maintenance and operational costs are reinforced by low staffing costs: for

example, the company’s IT Department had four people supporting 85 users at a

single location originally; now, in a company three times larger, the same IT staff

supports over 200 users across 10 remote locations.

“The IT staff has not grown at all,

even with all the changes,

acquisitions and growth that has

Gemeente Goes Gemeente Goes hosts SAP applications for six municipalities on IBM i

The need:

Gemeente Goes and five other Dutch municipalities were running CiVision

Belastingen & Kadaster Suite, a qualified SAP Business All-in-One partner solution

from PinkRoccade Local Government, on a variety of IBM and HP platforms on

separate servers at their own data centers. Hardware costs were relatively high, and

obtaining local support was difficult and expensive.

The solution:

Working with PinkRoccade Local Government, the six municipalities consolidated

their SAP Business All-in-One environments into separate IBM i subsystems within

a single logical partition on an IBM Power 550 Express server running at the

Gemeente Goes data center. The subsystems also run a number of legacy

applications in mixed workload mode.

The benefits:

Consolidating to a single Power 550 Express server reduces hardware,

maintenance and support costs by approximately 40 percent.

IBM i subsystems provide a highly secure and reliable environment even for a

mixed workload of multiple legacy and SAP applications.

IBM POWER6 processors deliver excellent performance for the combined overall

workload.

Working with IBM Global Business Services and SAP France, Solinest

implemented the SAP Business All-in-One solution on the IBM Power

Systems platform with an IBM DB2 database. IBM Global Business Services

provided an end-to-end solution encompassing design, architecture, sizing,

configuration, data migration, rollout and training for the SAP software,

helping Solinest to achieve rapid deployment despite limited internal IT

resources.

The benefits:

Coherent integration of business processes across different functional

areas.

Estimated 300 per cent improvement in data quality.

Enabling improved client service; real-time inventory information is

available both internally and to supply chain partners via an extranet

Zenda Leather reduces costs and improves productivity with the IBM System i InstallOption for SAP Business All-in-One

Business challenge

Zenda Leather had a complex mix of different applications at its 11 global

locations. The company’s aging infrastructure was not able to support its

rapid growth, and Zenda Leather was unable to get an overview of its

worldwide sales and production operations. Moreover, some of its IT systems

were actually beginning to fail. Zenda Leather needed a way to more

effectively manage operations at its international business units, one that was

supported by a reliable, high-performance IT infrastructure.

Solution

Zenda Leather chose to run SAP software as its core business solution but

was concerned that it would be a time-consuming, costly process. IBM

Business Partner InterComputer proposed a two-step implementation of IBM

System i® InstallOption for the SAP Business All-in-One solution. First, an IBM

System i 550 2-way server was quickly deployed to host the development and

QA environment. Second, an IBM Power 550, SAP edition, 2/4-way server

was installed and networked with the first server. The core SAP business

software was then installed on both IBM Power Systems™ servers.

Benefits Helps improve and centralize global business operations and provide a

big-picture view from a single, centralized location
