Virtualized SAN and Network Infrastructure
Advantages (attributes of Dynamic Infrastructure):Advantages (attributes of Dynamic Infrastructure):• Energy Savings during non-peak hours by consolidating workloads and powering off excess
servers
• Workload movement to a different server with no loss of service
• Continuous Application Availability through planned outages for hardware and firmware maintenance
• Workload Balancing as computing needs spike by redistributing workloads onto multiple physical• Workload Balancing as computing needs spike by redistributing workloads onto multiple physical servers without service interruption

How can SimManager leverage SoFS?U S FS ifi d t i f t t f E i i A l iUse SoFS as a unified storage infrastructure for Engineering Analysis
– Configure local vaults in SoFS for site deployments– Exploit direct access to the vault and manipulate files directly with speed and efficiency – as
permitted by SimManager for clients (in addition to itself)– Cross mount remote file systems and Read Only Cache remote content in SoFS
• Single Site Leverage – highlighting Direct Client Access– Attach all clients, SimManager, and HPC cluster to SoFS in a single namespace– SimManager can determine if local storage is available via Action Runner– SimManager “owns” the data in the vaults. It can add and remove both interactive and batch
clients from access control lists and pass pointers to clients for their data.– SimManager will “rename” result files produced by solver applications such as Nastran to the g p y pp
vault location thus minimizing file movement – Works for all scenarios except Web Client (which must use HTTP access and can not directly
NFS mount the file system)
• Multi Site Leverage:• Multi-Site Leverage:– Configure both sites with SoFS and cross mount file systems– Through a special extension, SoFS supports local Read Only caching (pull) of content from a
remote site.

SoFS Replication and Caching• SoFS supports both Replication (push) and Caching (pull) of File System
Content– Replication Modes
Si l Sit• Single Site• Multiple Sites• Synchronous • Asynchronous
R li t ti h d l• Replicate on creation or upon a schedule
– Read Only Caching (via special extensions)• SoFS is capable of caching remote files and associated metadata in the local (GPFS-
based) file systembased) file system– Files accessed by multiple remote users would be transferred via WAN only once– Directory and attribute caching significantly reduces WAN traffic related to accessing directories
and querying file attributes such as owner and size • Replicate content from a remote site based on first “touch” (directory and file content)
at the local site• Or, use a remote (originating) db update event to trigger a pseudo touch from the local
site
Read / Write caching enhancements are in process– Read / Write caching enhancements are in process
