Summary
of
Changes
to
IBM
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
Version
5
This
section
summarizes
the
changes
that
were
made
to
the
IBM
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
product.
Technical
Changes
for
Version
5
Release
2
—
January
2004
The
following
changes
have
been
made
to
the
product
for
this
edition:
NDMP
Support
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
now
supports
backup
via
NDMP
for
NAS
file
servers
that
comply
with
NDMP
standards
and
are
neither
EMC
Celerra
nor
Network
Appliance
file
servers.
NAS
vendors
now
can
use
a
certification
process
in
order
to
ensure
NAS
file
servers
are
compatible
with
Tivoli
Storage
Manager.
Disaster
Recovery
Manager
With
this
function
you
can
prepare
a
disaster
recovery
plan
to
help
you
recover
your
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
servers,
clients,
and
data
in
the
case
of
a
disaster.
You
can
also
use
the
function
to
manage
your
offsite
recovery
media
and
automate
some
recovery
procedures.
IBM
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
for
Data
Retention
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
for
Data
Retention
provides
enhancements
to
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
Extended
Edition
to
prevent
critical
data
from
being
erased
or
rewritten.
This
new
product
helps
meet
additional
requirements
defined
by
regulatory
agencies
for
retention
and
disposition
of
data.
These
enhancements
include
new
functionality
and
new
device
support
and
are
delivered
in
these
key
areas:
Data
retention
protection
This
feature
prevents
deliberate
or
accidental
deletion
of
data
until
its
specified
retention
criterion
is
met.
Event-based
retention
policy
In
some
cases,
retention
must
be
based
on
an
external
event
such
as
closing
a
brokerage
account.
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
for
Data
Retention
supports
event-based
retention
policy
to
allow
data
retention
to
be
based
on
an
event
other
than
the
storage
of
the
data.
Deletion
hold
In
order
to
ensure
that
records
are
not
deleted
when
a
regulatory
retention
period
has
lapsed
but
other
legal
requirements
mandate
that
the
records
continue
to
be
maintained,
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
for
Data
Retention
includes
deletion
hold.
Using
this
feature
will
prevent
stored
data
from
being
deleted
until
the
hold
is
released.
Operational
Reporting
The
Operational
Reporting
feature
automates
daily
monitoring
tasks
and
generates
reports
indicating
whether
a
server
requires
attention.
This
feature
reduces
the
amount
of
time
required
to
administer
Tivoli
Storage
Manager.

IBM
3592
Support
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
now
supports
IBM
3592
devices.
The
3592
device
has
fast
access
capability
that
gives
users
the
option
of
scaling
down
tape

in
order
to
get
improved
data

times.
See
the
Administrator’s

for
more
information.
EMC
Centera
Support
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
now
supports
the
EMC
Centera
V2.0
storage
device.
Centera
devices
provide
retention
protection
for
archiving
fixed
content
digital
data
records.
Together
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
for
Data
Retention
and
Centera
devices
provide
a
foundation
storage
system
that
allows
mission-critical
data
to
be
retained
for
a
mandated
period
of
time
without
the
possibility
of
being
rewritten
or
erased.
Centera
devices
can
also
be
used
as
a
standard
storage
device
if
no
mandatory
retention
requirements
exist
for
the
data.
To
enable
Centera
support
for
data
retention
protection,
use
the
new
commands,
DEFINE
DEVCLASS
CENTERA
and
SET
ARCHIVERETENTION
PROTECTION.
Sony

and
AIT100
WORM
Media
Support
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
now
supports
the
Sony
AIT50
and
AIT100
WORM
(write
once,
read
many)
media
technology.
To
enable
this
support,
the
DEFINE
DEVCLASS
(8MM)
command
has
a
new
parameter.

The
following
changes
were
made
to
the
product
for
this
edition:
LAN-Free
Data
Movement
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
supports
LAN-free
data
movement
in

(SAN)
environments.
The
support
allows
client
data
to
move
directly
from
the
client
system
to
a
server-managed
storage
device
on
the
SAN.
This
enhancement
reduces
data

so
that
more
bandwidth
is
available
to
other
applications

Export
and
Import
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
server
export
and
import
processing
was
enhanced
to
support
the
following
functions:
v
Direct
server
export
to
server
import
over
the
TCP/IP
communications
line
between
two
servers
of
the
same
or
differing
operating
systems.
This
eliminates
the
need
for
compatible
sequential
device
types
between
servers
to
perform
data
movement.
v
Merging
imported
data
into
existing
client
file
spaces
on
the
server.
v
Exporting
client
file
data
according
to
a
date
and
time
specification.
This
allows
server-to-server
export
and
import
opertaions
to
maintain
duplicate
copies
of
client
data
on
two
or
more
servers.
See
the
Administrator’s
Guide
for
more
information.
Server
Performance
Tuning
The
maximum
value
of
the
server
option,
TXNGROUPMAX,
was
increased.
When
transferring
several
small
files,
increasing
the
TXNGROUPMAX
option
can
improve
throughput
for
operations
to
tape.
You
can
set
the
TXNGROUPMAX
option
for
individual
clients.
See
the
Administrator’s

more
information.
Communication
Method
Tivoli
Storage

It
replaces
the

and
can
be
used
to
optimally
support

LAN-Free
Data
Movement
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
supports
LAN-free
data
movement
in
storage

environments.
The
support
allows
client
data
to
move

to
a
server-managed

on
the
SAN.
This
enhancement
reduces
data

so
that
more
bandwidth
is
available
to
other
applications.

Introduction
IBM
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
(Tivoli
Storage
Manager)
is
an
enterprise-wide
storage
management
application
for
the
network.
It
provides
automated
storage
management
services
to
multivendor
workstations,
personal
computers,
and
local
area
network
(LAN)
file
servers.
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
includes
the
following
components:
v
Server
v
Administrative
client
v
Backup-archive
client
v
Space
Manager
(Hierarchical
storage
management
(HSM)
client)
v

contains
information
to
help
you
understand
the
messages
issued
by
these
components.
Messages
can
appear
on
the
server
console,
the
administrative
client,
an
operator
terminal,
the
administrative
graphical
user
interface,
the
backup-archive
client,
the
space-management
client,
or
the
application
clients.
Tivoli
Storage
Manager
provides
an
activity
log
to
help
the
administrator
track
server
activity
and
monitor
the
system.
The
activity
log
contains
messages
generated
by
the
server,
and
is
stored
in
the
database.
The
server
automatically
deletes
messages
from
the
activity
log
after
they
have
passed
the
specified
retention
period.
Any
messages
sent
to
the
server
console
are
stored
in
the
activity
log.
Examples
of
the
types
of
messages
stored
in
the
activity
log
include:
v
When
client
sessions
start
or
end
v
When
migration
