INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE
MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAM
COMMUNITY AND SERVICE
2018-2019
How do we live in relation to others?
How can I contribute to the community?
How can I help others?
Community and service starts in the classroom and extends beyond it, requiring students to take an active part
in the communities in which they live.
Giving importance to the sense of community throughout the program encourages responsible citizenship as it
seeks to deepen the adolescent's knowledge and understanding of the world around them. The emphasis is on
developing community awareness and concern, and the skills needed to make an effective contribution to
society.
Students are encouraged to make connections between their intellectual and social growth, thereby refining their
affective, creative and ethical as well as cognitive development. This is achieved through a process of discovery
of self and community, and reflections inside as well as outside the classroom.

IB Service and Action Philosophy
IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a personal commitment to service, and act to
make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment. IB World Schools value service with others as an
important way to engage in principled action across a range of overlapping local and global communities. Through
responsible action, tightly connected with sustained inquiry and critical reflection, young people and adults can develop
the kinds of attributes described by the learner profile that are essential for success in future academic pursuits and for
adult life.
The MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and their
developmentally appropriate responsibility in their community. In the IB continuum, this continues with the service
component of the DP’s community, action, service (CAS) requirements, in which students continue to increase their
awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth, undertake new challenges, plan and initiate activities, work
collaboratively with others, show perseverance and commitment, engage with locally and globally significant challenges
and consider the ethical implications of their actions.
As students become more aware and acquire a better understanding of the context, and of their responsibilities, they
become empowered to make choices about how to take thoughtful and positive action. This action will be different from
student to student and from context to context. The action may involve students in”
Feeling empathy towards others
Making small-scale changes to their behavior
Undertaking larger and more significant projects
Acting on their own
Acting collaboratively
Taking physical action
Suggesting modifications to an existing system to the benefit of all involved
Lobbying people in more influential positions to act.
Service activities should evolve beyond doing for others to engaging with others in a shared commitment towards the
common good. Meaningful service requires understanding of an underlying issue such as poverty, literacy or pollution,
and authenticating the need for this service. Meaningful service includes interaction, such as building links with
individuals or groups in the community. To align with the general principle that the rights, dignity and autonomy of all
those involved in service are respected means the identification of needs towards which a service activity will be directed
has to involve prior communication and full consultation with the community or individual concerned. This approach,
based on a collaborative exchange, maximizes the potential benefits for all people involved, including learning
opportunities for students as they develop and strengthen communication abilities.
MYP: From Principles in Practice

It is important that as students work to meet the service and action requirements that they understand the intent
behind the requirement. The intent is not to simply meet the minimum required hours, but to fulfill the requirement in
a manner that truly benefits the student and the community as a whole. Students should be looking for activities that
are meaningful to them and that will allow them to develop new passions. Appropriate service activities must clearly
show how the community benefitted. Appropriate action activities must clearly benefit the student in some way. Below
are examples of appropriate service and action activities as well as a list of activities that will not be approved. These by
no means represent all possibilities. If a student is unsure as to whether or not an activity will be approved they should
ensure they have teacher approval before proceeding.

General Information
1. All MYP students are required to complete a minimum of 50 hours per year, maintain documentation of hours
through ManageBac, complete reflections, collect evidence, and create a brief presentation. If a student is having
issues with using ManageBac they should see their core teacher or Mrs. Susewind for assistance. Please note,
students new to MYP will be given ManageBac accounts when the new school year begins. If students complete
hours over the summer ensure to log the hours on paper and get an email address for the supervisor. Students will
have the opportunity to log the hours in ManageBac once they have a ManageBac account.
2. Each student will complete 25 action hours and 25 service hours.
Action Hours: Practicing or enhancing a skill or talent that is not part of the school’s academic requirements or
instructional day (i.e. sports, class, private lessons, performances, running an experiment, writing, creating art,
leadership activities, extracurricular activities such as debate, drama, or, forensics). You can only count hours
that you are actively involved in improving yourself.
Service Hours: Addressing a community need and performed for a group or individual without reward, personal
benefit, or payment to the volunteer. Assisting non-profit organizations may be used for service hours. Family
responsibilities and/or obligations and assisting for-profit businesses may NOT be used for community and
service hours. You can only count hours that you are actively engaged in serving the community.
3. If an activity is in question on whether it meets the criteria for action or service ask a core teacher or Mrs. Susewind
for clarification, before completing the hours. Once students have entered a description of their activity into
ManageBac, their teacher advisor will approve the hours or discuss concerns with the student.
4. Students may begin completing hours for the upcoming school year the day after the previous school year officially
ends.

5. Students are expected to log all hours through ManageBac. An email address for the supervisor of the activity is needed in order for the supervisor to verify the number of hours completed. Keep in mind that the supervisor will not be emailed until the student has completed all required parts, including reflections. (Parents should not verify hours unless they are the direct supervisor of the activity)
6. Students will not receive credit for their hours until their supervisor has verified them through ManageBac. If a supervisor does not have an email or if a student is unable to get the supervisor to respond via email, there is a form that can be printed in ManageBac that the student can have signed by the supervisor and then upload it into ManageBac.
7. Action and Service hours are a requirement of the MYP. Students should ensure they have completed all hours by the final due date of June 15, 2018. Students who are not on track to meet the requirements will be placed on an action plan at the end of the third nine weeks. Failure to complete action and service hours, logs, reflections, and final presentation prior to the due date will result in the student being removed from the MYP Academy.
8. Students are to complete a presentation highlighting their service and action for the year with a focus on reflection, how they benefitted, and how their community benefitted. Presentations can be in any format chosen by the student. Possible options include: video, slide show, presentation board, etc... Due dates for presentations are below. Please note that if a student has not completed all hours by the presentation due date, they can still accumulate hours up to June 15. Their presentation should highlight the hours they have completed.
