Lots of good art this month, kicking off at INVERNESS MUSEUM & ART GALLERY
(IMAG) with a new installation of painting, print-making and sculpture by internationally
recognised artist, TOBY PATERSON [1]. He finds inspiration in what might seem the most
unpromising of places, including the concrete landscapes of post-war housing schemes
and the decaying remains of utopian building projects. The show is part of something
called Generation, a national celebration of the best of Scottish art from the last 25 years
linked to the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme. The show runs from 26 JUL23 AUG and
theres a preview & talk on 26 JUL from 122pm.
IG:LU at 19 CHURCH ST continues to be the finest place in town to catch up-and-coming
talent and the show from LAURA MOON [2]running from 0215 AUG looks like being no
exception. CalledMA DA, its a body of work which grew from perceptions of authority and
social control Its become a portrait exploring the life of her first authority figure, her father
Lawrence WJ Tierney, who died of Alzheimers aged only 55.
The process of making this work has been a way of finding out who he was as a human
being, as a regular guy, says Moon. Walking his walks I have tried to experience whathe experienced before I came into his life. The work that came out of this intenselypersonal journey has been a juxtaposition of strength and fragility. These two words, forme, sum up what I feel was the nature of our father-daughter relationship.
Meanwhile, from 1831 AUG you can catch METAMORPH MODELS [3]by MARK STEVENS
futuristic fighting machines with a retro Sci-Fi edge. Mark sculpts with his own unique
method to create sophisticated and realistic hardware. The irony is, that no matter how
realistic and belligerent they appear, they are made from broken everyday objects. Ace.
Another IG:LU favourite is ROSIE NEWMANand you can catch a piece she presented thereif you get to BELLADRUM FESTIVALon 08 & 09 AUG. Sometimes I Feel More Awake
When Im Asleepwas inspired by time working at Inverness Prison and includes prison
beds, ladder and poles. Itll be near the Temple area. Another piece, Sheep Asleep In
Treesapparently involves sedated sheep, which has us intrigued already. Youll find that
one near Mothers Ruin. Other artists on show at Bella include SARAH WAKEFORDwith
her life-size horse lanterns, VISION MECHANICSwith their willow heads in trees, ALISON
WEIGHTMAN & ROBIN WEBBs take on Rodins The Thinker(to be ceremonially burnt) and
SERGEJ ANDREEVSKIwholl be making huge dance paintings to accompany a live band.

On this years Independence Day weekend in the US, cinema takings were down 50% on
2013, perhaps suggesting Hollywood needs to examine its blockbuster formula. And aptly
thats reflected in the fact that this month sees the release of a whole slew of movies doing
something a little more interesting. Even SIN CITY 2: A DAME TO KILL FOR [1]looks like
having a bit of panache as co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller reunite to bring the
latters visually stunning graphic novels back to the screen.
AUDREY TATOU, being French, knows what good cinema is about, so its little surprise shes in
MOOD INDIGO [2], an inventive romantic yarn directed by Michael Gondry (Eternal Sunshine Of The
Spotless Mind) and featuring, uniquely, a cocktail-making piano. Thats yer continentals for you.
More great acting in GODS POCKET [3]and sadly the last chance to see the tragically
departed PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN on screen - about death and cover-ups in the gritty, blue-
collar neighbourhood of the title. Also features the excellent CHRISTINAMad MenHENDRICKS.
Interestingly, another Mad Menalumnus JON HAMM stars in the interesting looking THE
CONGRESS [4]. Its a sneaky dig at the film industry itself as ageing[Steady on! - Ed] actress
ROBIN WRIGHT (playing a version of herself) decides to preserve her digital likeness for afuture Hollywood, only to be sucked back in twenty years later. HARVEY KEITEL co-stars, which
is reason enough to make attendance compulsory.
The presence of BEN WHISHAW is invariably as good a recommendation as any, so his latest,
LILTING, should be worth a look. Set in contemporary London, this film tells the story of a
Cambodian-Chinese mother mourning the untimely death of her son whose world is suddenly
disrupted by the presence of a stranger.
Belle & Sebastian fans (arent we all?) will be delighted to learn that Stuart Murdochs long-
awaited crowd-funded, Glasgow-based GOD HELP THE GIRLis finally out this month. EMILY
BROWNING plays Eve, the girl of the title, who writes music to cope with a life thats falling apart.
Whatever you do, dont miss the brilliant TO SEE OURSELS(sic) season at EDEN COURT
featuring a diverse range of classic Scottish film &TV drama screenings and discussions
offering audiences an opportunity to think again about questions of Scottish history, culture
and identity. Highlights include the magnificent THE CHEVIOT, THE STAG & THE BLACK,
BLACK OIL, John Byrnes rarely seen follow-up series to Tutti Frutti, ANOTHER TIME ANOTHER
PLACE (starring TILDA SWINTON, KEN STOTT and JOHN GORDON SINCLAIR), the classic
LOCAL HEROand, suitably, FROM SCOTLAND WITH LOVE. The latter is made entirely from
archive Scottish film by Virginia Heath with a soundtrack by KING CREOSOTE. The two of them
will be holding a Q&A after the 06 SEP screening, with KC playing a few songs. Fine stuff.
But, if blockbusters are what you want, choose from THE EXPENDABLES 3 [5], THE
INBETWEENERS 2, INTO THE STORMand the kids biggie, PLANES 2: FIRE & RESCUE...
You can win tickets (& popcorn) for some of these, see p26/7 and our website...

Last August TWIN ATLANTICwere headlining
Belladrum, this month theyre back promoting their
new album Great Divideat Ironworks. We caught
up with stickman CRAIG KNEALE
Your new album - The Great Divide - does it mark a sea
change or a gradual progression? Does it have an overall
theme? - Id say its somewhere in between actually. We
havent gone jazz or anything like that, but its definitely
quite different to our last album Free. Its simpler but
more dynamic in terms of the songs that are on there.
There isnt an overall theme but the majority of the songs
were written whilst we were on tour so those experiences
definitely tie it all together when I listen to it.
Your favourite place in the world to play? - Its quite
clichd to say, but Glasgow is hard to beat for us. Were
very lucky that theres people that are very passionate
about our band many places that we play now - but there
is something added when we play Glasgow. I think the
crowds here have a sense of ownership of us that add
this extra emotion to the gigs. Its hard to describe but the
shows in Glasgow are the scariest but have the biggest
emotional pay off.
Your fantasy duet - who would that be with? - Im
a massively over the top fan of Pearl Jam so getting to
write a song with Eddie Vedder would be my fantasy duet.
I dont think theres anyone else who writes melodies
like him, or gets that much emotion out of a vocal
performance - he allows sounds so believable, even on
studio recordings. I would just love to get an insight into
how he goes about writing a song, so Id be happy if he
didnt even let me play on it in the end!
Do you remember a point where you felt youd
crossed a threshold into being a real band, thatd youd
arrived? - It was never an overnight thing with our band,
but I think the big turning point is when we started to seepeople show as much passion towards us in places other
than Scotland. We were very lucky that people in Scotland
took to us very fast, we just felt an instant connection
here. It took a lot longer for us to feel that in other
countries, its only been in the last 4 years that weve
really started to notice it. It feels good!
It seems there is a point at which a band need people
to hear their music more than pay for it, followed by a
later point where they need people to pay for it more
than hear it. Is that true and do you feel you lose out on
a lot of revenue through file sharing? Did home taping
kill music? - I think its a catch twenty-two because you
really need the internet and YouTube at the start of your
career as theres so many other bands out there forpeople to listen to. The internet is an incredible device to
be creative on, and to get that creativity out to potentially
the whole world. But were at a stage now where our
band is a full time job so we do have to make a living
out of it. We dont expect people to buy our music rather
than stream it, you just have to hope that you make
music thats good enough that people want to own it and
support it.
Best gig youve played to date and why?
- Our best gig is kind of an ever evolving answer, soits not necessarily our biggest gig thats the best at
this moment? For instance, we played a few festivals in
Germany a couple of weeks back and they were fantastic
shows - the crowds werent massive but there was a buzz
in the crowd that was so exciting. It felt like the cusp of
something that could get very big there, a feeling weve
had before a lot in the UK - but getting it that far from
home was really special. But, then we played Glastonbury
last week and it definitely felt like an equally special show
so its hard to sat what one was better! Sorry to sit on the
fence...
What was the smallest gig you ever played? - It was
actually in Inverness! We played Inverness in 2007 within
a few months of me joining the band at a place called
the Market Bar. If you know where Im talking about, then
youll know what Im talking about. Even then, we had
quite a silly amount of gear, so all our amps were stacked
on top of each other in the corner and Barry and Ross
were on a bench behind Sam. And there was about 3
people there but it felt busy.
Best act you ever supported? - Weve been really
lucky that weve got to play with a lot of our heroes over
the years, but weve been supporting Kings Of Leon this
summer and thats been amazing to be a part of. Theyre
such a cool band to watch, they play the songs so well
and his voice live is even better than on record. Its been
humbling to get an incite into touring at that stadium level,
they manage to do it in a way where they completely own
the crowd but it feels like it would be just as good in a
small venue as well.

The Many Forms of Folk
MUSIC
Yes, theres Belladrum, but theres also a wealth of interesting music on show
this month, much of it exploring areas away from just heads-down rocknroll. One
of the most exhilarating is DUKE SPECIAL [1]who manages to involve himself
in projects as diverse as writing music for the Northern Irish version of Sesame
Street, composing for and appearing in Brecht plays and, along the way, making a
platinum selling album. Hes doing a short Highland tour taking in ULLAPOOL (02
AUG), IRONWORKS (03 AUG) and AVIEMORE OLD BRIDGE INN (04 AUG), and is
wholeheartedly recommended.
As is an enthralling sounding prospect called LOVE AND MURDER BALLADS [2]
at EDEN COURT on 17 AUG. A collaboration between legendary Scottish singer-
songwriter RAB NOAKESand acclaimed Gaelic songstress KATHLEEN MACINNES,
we can expect songs from Scots and Gaelic cultures such as The Two Sisters/
Minorie and An da fheannaig (The Twa Corbies) alongside Down in the Willow
Garden, Long Black Veil and Valley of Tears. A rare treat.
A rather more established collaboration is that between ALY BAIN & PHIL
CUNNINGHAM [3], but the music and laughs they make together continue to
delight. Their show at EDEN COURT on 30 AUG should be no exception.
Perhaps a little less familiar are THE JEREMIAHS [4]who play STRATHPEFFER
PAVILION on 19 AUG. Unfamiliar on these shores perhaps, but in their native
Dublin theyre being lauded as one of the most exciting new Irish Traditional
combos for quite some time. Perhaps theyll do for that genre what Lau are doing
for the Scots Gaelic version. Certainly worth checking out.
As is MARTIN ALVARADO [5] who plays EDEN COURT on 09 AUG. Widely
considered to be Argentinas finest tango singer, the Buenos Aires-born guitar-
playing troubadour comes to Inverness fresh from Edinburghs Fringe where hes
been wowing audiences. He is joined by an exceptional talent from Finland, Mikko
Helenius, a classically trained pianist and bandoneon player, who is, unsurprisingly,
proud of his ability to play both his instruments simultaneously.
Heads up too for THE STRAY BIRDS [6], coming to EDEN COURT on 06 SEP.
The Americana trio are selling records by the bucketload and headlined CelticConnections earlier this year. Theyre bound to be popular so get your tickets now.
More about them next month..

And it goes from strength to strength, with BBC coverage (albeit on

here. Pull this 4-pager out and take it with you and check out as
many of these acts as you can, because they wont disappoint.
This years event, on 08 & 09 AUG looks like attracting a crowd
of attendees wholl never have been to such a thing before,as the Friday night is headlined by Mr Sexbomb, TOM JONES.
While his phwooar quotient doesnt seem to have receded
for ladies of a certain age, whats often forgotten is that he
actually has a rather splendid voice. And he was mates with
Elvis. Thats enough for us.
