What do you mean, you haven’t seen the multi-million pound paintings at INVERNESS MUSEUM & ART GALLERY? Well there’s no time to delay, the four portraits by eighteenth century masters JOSHUA REYNOLDS & THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH are only on display until 02 JAN, so stop whatever you’re doing and get yourself down there right away.

It’s actually a good time to get along to IMAG. While talk of turning the Castle into a tourist attraction (something that should have been done decades ago) has thankfully renewed demands for the gallery and museum to be relocated there – a clamour you can join in with by contributing suggestions to the FUTURE OF CASTLE HILL exhibition at IMAG – the current site has had a refurbishment with a spanking new café. And there are also a trio of displays well worth taking in, THE GREAT TAPESTRY OF SCOTLAND [1] (09 JAN–20 FEB) being particularly notable as one of the most ambitious community arts projects in the world. The project, developed by esteemed Scottish writer Alexander McCall Smith, artist Andrew Crummy and historical writer Alistair Moffat brought together hundreds of volunteer stitchers from across Scotland to create a record-breaking 143 metre long series of embroidered cloths, beautifully illustrating the history of Scotland, the panels depict Scotland’s fascinating history, science, culture, industry and politics over the centuries.

Ever heard of JOSEPHINE TEY? You can’t be blamed for not having heard of her, but hopefully an exhibition of her personal items at IMAG until 16 JAN will bring a little more attention to an Inverness crime writer who was a contemporary of Agatha Christie and deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as that doyenne of the genre. See the exhibition then head down to Leakey’s to hunt out some fi rst editions.

A word too for the FAMILIAR FACES, FAVOURITE PLACES exhibition at IMAG from 19 JAN–05 MAR. This inviting show comprises black and white portraits of a selection of community members from Wester Ross, accompanied by their favourite views, also in black & white. These captivating portraits present individual characters not only through the photograph of the person, but through the context of the environment in which they are comfortable, be it their place of work, the garden that they tend or their favourite room.

CASTLE GALLERY MIXED CHRISTMAS EXHIBITION, to 31 Dec, castlegallery.co.uk

EDEN COURT GALLERYFINDING NEVERLAND, to end of Dec, Artists of all abilities are invited to come and exhibit in Eden Court’s annual Winter Exhibition. The theme this year has echoes of Peter Pan with the exhibition seeking work showing the magical beauty of the Highlands.

IMAGSHARMANKA, MERRY-GO-WORLD, to 31 Dec, Merry-Go-World includes 10 new kinetic sculptures made of the remnants of domestic machinery and populated by menagerie of hand-carved animal-like-humans and human-like-animals. It is refl ecting on the modern world where the different countries and cultures are involved in perpetual movement - amusing, funny, scary and faster then ever. Sharmanka (Russian for Barrel-Organ) was founded by sculptor-mechanic Eduard Bersudsky and theatre director Tatyana Jakovskaya in St.Petersburg (Russia) in 1989. Based in Glasgow since 1996 it has gained a reputation as one of the city’s hidden treasures.sharmanka.com

FOUR PORTRAITS: JOSHUA REYNOLDS & THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH, to 31 Dec, This exhibition originates from a private Highland collection and features three paintings from Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723 - 1792) and also includes a Thomas Gainsborough (1727 - 1788) portrait of Thomas Charles 6th Viscount Tracy from the same

period. Gainsborough went on to surpass his rival Reynolds to become the dominant British portraitist of the second half of the 18th century. Small Art Gallery.

THE GREAT TAPESTRY OF SCOTLAND, 9 Jan to 20 Feb The Great Tapestry of Scotland was unveiled for the fi rst time after its completion at the Scottish Parliament on 3rd September 2013. The Tapestry is one of the most ambitious community arts projects in the world and Inverness Museum & Art Gallery are delighted to be hosting a selection of panels.

THE FUTURE OF CASTLE HILL, to 22 Jan, This public exhibition provides information on possible options for the redevelopment of Inverness Castle and its surroundings. Your comments will help shape the brief for a forthcoming architectural competition addressing the future of Castle Hill, so come along and get involved! castlehill.info

HIGHLAND WINTER WONDERLAND EXHIBITION, to 17 Jan, This delightful exhibition brings together a festive fest of images from the celebrated Highland Photographic Archive Collections. Shiver with the thrill of stepping back into the glistening snow drifts and the crystalline sheen of curling ponds frozen in time as you enjoy some old favourites showing the Highlands at their wintry best.

FAMILIAR FACES, FAVOURITE PLACES, 19 Jan to 5 Mar, The People of Wester Ross and their Favourite Views, Photographic Exhibition. These captivating portraits present individual characters not only through the photograph of the person, but through the context of the environment in which they are comfortable; be it their place of work, the garden that they tend or their favourite room. Photographer Adrian Hollister has joined forces with Mark

Appleton, a local graphic designer and professional landscape photographer, to produce this exhibition.

JOSEPHINE TEY, to 16 Jan, Inverness’ Golden Age crime writer. An exhibition of personal items once belonging to Ms. Tey and now in the museum’s collections - being exhibited for the fi rst time along with items from the Paterson Archive and Ms. Henderson’s private collection. (Room to discover is sometimes used for other events so it’s best to call 01463 237114 to check before making a special trip for this exhibition).inverness.highland.museum

INCHMORE GALLERYWINTER EXHIBITION & CD COLLECTION, to Jan 2016Miniature, CD sized, works of wondrous originality, suitable for giving, receiving, or treating yourself to this Christmas along side an eclectic mix of artworks by new and familiar Inchmore Gallery artists. Check opening times and dates online: inchmoregallery.co.uk

INVERNESS AIRPORTDUNN + BARR, to Jan 2016An exhibition of recent abstract paintings by two artist living and working in Ross-shire, Alex Dunn and Ian Barr. Alex Dunn used to paint portraits, dead rabbits, and landscapes, but over the last decade his pictures have become more and more abstract. He uses coloured paper, graphite and crayons. He is obsessive about the way his pictures are compiled or built up and not at all clear or indeed all that interested in what the pictures ‘mean’. Ian Barr has always been an abstract artist and makes constructions and sculpture as well as paintings but, whatever the medium, his work grows out personal responses to specifi c experiences mediated by time and the random and ambiguous processes of memory.

IONA GALLERY, Kingussietheionagallery.co.uk

KILMORACK GALLERY WINTER EXHIBITION, to 12 March, ‘I always love our winter show,’ Tony the gallery’s founder confi des, ‘it is a time when the dark outside world looks into the gallery. Our wood-burning stove and red walls’ glow and the artists’ work sings. It is also the easiest time to try out new artists and new things, so winter shows can be the best for those looking for something fresh. Exhibiting artists include James Newton Adams’ faux-naive paintings, Eoghan Bridge’s sculptures of horses and riders, landscape by well-known artists Ruth Brownlee, Kirstie Cohen, Janette Kerr and Allan MacDonald. There will also be new work by Peter White. kilmorackgallery.co.uk

RIVERSIDE GALLERY HANNAH FRANK, to 30 Jan, Featuring original paintings and sculptures from The Hannah Frank Collection, there will also be on display many prints of the work that Hannah produced from the late 1920’s until 1952, when she turned to sculpture having studied under the renowned sculptor Benno Schotz. ALSO: an extensive exhibition of late 19th and early 20th Century etchings by some of Scotland’s and England’s best and most sought after exponents of the art of Etching and Engraving, including work by W.L. Wyllie, Eileen Soper, Rowland Langmaid, William Douglas Macleod, Harold Wyllie.

We hope you’ve held onto a few pennies to the end of the month as there are two releases you would be well-advised not to miss: Oscar contender SPOTLIGHT (29), with Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams and Stanley Tucci, in a real-life-inspired tale about the Boston Globe uncovering Catholic priest child abuse – and the same day YOUTH, which combines the talents of Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel (plus Rachel Weisz, Paul Dano and Jane Fonda!) with truly special director Paolo Sorrentino (Consquences of Love, This Must Be The Place, The Great Beauty). Mr Caine has already won an award for this one, perhaps more will follow…

Finally, a mention of a trio of fi lms that aired at 2015’s Inverness Film Festival which you can see again in Jan: SLEEPING WITH OTHER PEOPLE (01 Vue; 29J–04F EC); GÜEROS (05–07 EC) and THE LESSON (17,18,21 EC).

Oscar and his shiny chums ensure we get a veritable feast of fi lm in January as the major studios aim to have their particular contender foremost in the Academy’s mind when announcing nominations. We’ll take things in date order (ish) for a change: fi rst up, from the fi rst of the month (01), David O Russell re-pairs with both Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro in JOY [1], about the woman who invented the Miracle Mop. Doesn’t sound up to much does it – but trust us, you’ll enjoy it! Same day sees another big award-vyer, THE DANISH GIRL (01 Vue; 22–28 EC) with a cross-dressing Eddie Redmayne hoping we didn’t see his awful turn in Jupiter Ascending and also hoping we don’t realise that Alicia Vikander is the actual star of the fi lm. Eden Court get their turn to host some STAR WARS mania as THE FORCE AWAKENS runs until 07 JAN, whilst from 02–07 you can catch Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara in the slowly compelling award nominee CAROL.

Quentin Tarantino should have a whole cupboardful of Oscars that he hasn’t, so we’re hoping his latest, THE HATEFUL EIGHT [2] (08 Vue; 22–28 EC) lives up to his usual snappily-dialogued tension-fest. Familiar collaborators abound - Kurt Russell, Samuel L Jackson, Tim Roth, Jennifer Jason-Leigh, Michael Madsen - with a newcomer providing Tarantino’s fi rst full orchestral score, Ennio Morricone! Released the same day will be the perhaps Point-Less ‘re-make’ of POINT BREAK, which happens to have little or nothing to do with Katherine Bigalow’s cult-lore original and features Ray Winstone (hopefully not as a fl oating cockney head urging you to risk your hard-earned on futile betting). Eden Court gets all HUNGER GAMES on us with the fi nal MOCKINGJAY PT 2 (08–11) showing alongside the previous instalments.

Mid month and another Western awards proposition, THE REVENANT [3] (15 Vue, 29–11F EC), directed by last year’s Best Picture oscar winner, Alejandro Iñárritu, and featuring an apparent career-best Leonardo Di Caprio alongside Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, and Domhnall Gleeson. Expect hardy frontiersmen, betrayal and cold revenge. Brie Larson has been tipped by some for glory for her turn in harrowing-yet-rewarding drama-thriller ROOM (15) based on Emma Donoghue’s book of the same name, whilst in THE LADY IN THE VAN which gets a second lease of life at Eden Court (15–21) replaces harrow with comedy courtesy of the unimpeachable Maggie Smith. Also at EC, catch the best movie yet fi lmed on an iPhone 5, TANGERINE (15,16) which has already won awards and may be in for more.

The sadly lambasted Clooney-produced politi-comedy OUR BRAND IS CRISIS (22) with Sandra Bullock, shouldn’t distract you from the same-day release of the by-all-accounts excellent THE BIG SHORT [4], which tells the story of the fi nancial crisis from the perspective of those smart enough to spot it coming and bet on it. Aside from enjoying top performances from CHRISTIAN BALE, RYAN GOSLING, BRAD PITT and STEVE CARELL, you might just understand how reckless the establishment were and conclude “hey, weren’t WE supposed to be in charge?”. It will happen one day. More anti-oppression in the Bryan-Cranston-starring TRUMBO [5] (22), telling the strangely true story of the blacklisted screenwriter. THE PROGRAM (22–25) fi nally fi nds it way to Inverness (Eden Court), having actually been UK-released back in October. Lance Armstrong and his journalist foe David Walsh are portrayed with vigour and veracity by Ben Foster and Chris O’Dowd.

We’re imagining that by the time January rolls around the whole concept of “kids and families” will have pushed patience to its very limits, any activities involving such a grouping restricted to accidentally stepping on bits of the kids’ Lego or looking for the receipts for unwanted gifts. Whilst in warmer, less civilised places, they now have no excuses for further celebration until Easter, for us more culturally enriched people, we have Burns Night to deal with – which a couple of years back looked like it was going to become appropriated by one side of the referendum campaign but has now returned to its ‘universal’ roots. One day, when England wins its independence, they’ll come up with the idea for a Shakespeare Night…

Whilst there are probably still many youngsters who can be persuaded that the event is something to do with the gnarly old boss from The Simpsons, the majority will understand that it’s got something to do with the nation’s fi nest poet (at least, outside of Spring Break’s wordman Butterscotch…) and they’ll get a chance to at least realise he’s worth jumping around for at the WEE BURNS CEILIDH on 23 JAN at EDEN COURT. Part of the larger BIG BURNS STRAMASH taking part at the venue as part of the Winter Festival, this event, courtesy of Eden Court CREATIVE is aimed specifi cally at families – with music, dancing and a few special guests to help celebrate Burns Night.

It’s the conclusion of a whole day’s worth of events and while a lantern procession before the ceilidh is free, some of the workshops and screenings are ticketed to go to the Eden Court website at eden-court.co.uk for full details.

Plenty of music on offer this month though the really big names are presumably wintering in warmer climes, ready to unleash themselves on live performances later in the year, the only way these days that musicians can actually monetise their art. Still, there are a fair few attractions vying for your attention, one of the main ones being the BIG BURNS CEILIDH at EDEN COURT on 23 JAN. The conclusion of a whole day of workshops, fi lms and music at the venue going under the banner The Big Burns Stramash it features the self-styled CEILIDH COMMANDOS – GARY INNES [1] & EWEN HENDERSON (both Mànran), ALEC DALGLISH (Skerryvore) and MARTIN O’NEILL (Treacherous Orchestra) – who’ll be getting you dancing, with stovies included in the ticket price.

That same day, 23 JAN there’s another man from the olden days barrelling into your consciousness as MICHAEL SCHENKER’S TEMPLE OF ROCK [2] comes to IRONWORKS. The Teutonic metal man reveals that, on his last album, “I wanted lots of double bass drum to keep the fast songs rolling like a train with lots of energy covered with interesting elements, a couple of my UFO days-type of mid tempos and the 7 string low sound to get a very wide range of sounds and emotions.” A mission statement sure to appeal to some.

If you’d rather celebrate a baggier vibe, head along to THE COMPLETE STONE ROSES at IRONWORKS on 29 JAN, or, if you want to get a hint of why the music you like now sounds like it does, go to PAUL JONES & DAVE KELLY [3] at EDEN COURT on 24 JAN when they’ll perform the work of the greats, ranging from Howling’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker through to Sonny Boy Williamson.

ANDA UNION [4], who play EC on 31 JAN are a group of young Mongolians living in the capital city of Inner Mongolia, Hohhot, 500 km west of Beijing. Driven by their thirst to discover the power and magic of the rich and powerful Mongol traditions and culture, they’ll be performing different styles of music from all over their country, including the incredible art of “throat singing”. Safe to say it’ll be quite unlike anything you see or hear in the ensuing 12 months.

If you believe, as some people do apparently, that great music is old as the hills, you’re well catered for by an impressive roster of classical performances this month. On 13 JAN, there’s an RSNO VIENNESE NIGHT with soprano AILISH TYNAN [5] @ EC, SCOZZESI @ Boat of Garten Community Hall on 16 JAN, KAPTEN PIANO TRIO @ Smithton Culloden Church on 22 JAN, PASCAL ROGÉ @ Nairn CC on 24 JAN and SIROCCO WIND TRIO @ Spectrum Centre on 29 JAN. There’ll be moments when you’ll rue the day electricity was ever invented.

Unlike the SLAM [6] boys, for whom electricity was always sort of essential to the way they’ve consistently unscrewed our bonces over the years and will, as always, be welcomed back for their appearance at IRONWORKS on 30 JAN.

The above gig will no doubt whet many a Highland clubbers’ appetite ahead of the recently announced techno shindig, TECHNIQUE at INVERNESS LEISURE on 30 APR. A way off yet, but headliner DAVE CLARKE means that, unsurprisingly, tickets are selling fast. Anyone heading to that shindig that will no doubt also be getting tickets for the new GROOVE CAIRNGORM, taking place in Aviemore from 11–13 MAR with such delights on offer as GRANDMASTER FLASH, HOT CHIP, ETON MESSY, PRIDES, DJ YODA and more. A sister winter event to complement last summer’s Groove Loch Ness, it’s the UK’s fi rst resort-based snowsports festival and sounds like a recipe for success and kudos to the organisers for coming up with something that we’ve been crying out for for years. Check out the Groove CairnGorm Facebook page for more… and keep your eyes on whatsonhighlands.com

SUN 24 JAN PAUL JONES AND DAVE KELLY @ Eden Court, 8pm. Ruggedly durable and timeless, the Blues is perhaps more popular today than it has ever been. Young musicians still cut their teeth on its enticing, 12-bar appeal, but its real rewards, true virtuosity, poise and knowledge, only come with age. Founder members of The Blues Band, Paul Jones and Dave Kelly’s tangled and colourful roots go way back into the true undergrowth of the tradition. As well as their own original material, they not only know and perform the work of the greats, ranging from Howling’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker through to Sonny Boy Williamson - they actually played alongside them, and enjoyed their friendship.

Always good to stretch that festive season out as far as possible and while the folk in Englandshire are left forlornly plucking pine needles from the carpet and shaking tinsel from their hair while desperately examining the calendar to work out just how many weeks until they get to celebrate the Great Easter Bunny Chocolate Festival, up here we can emphasise just how important it is to hold off the back-to-drudgery bit for a while until we’ve had a chance to celebrate the life/work/haggis-love of Rabbie Burns. And on the off-chance that you haven’t made plans to give yer man’s special day the appreciation it deserves, EDEN COURT are holding a BIG BURNS STRAMASH on 23 JAN, with fi lms, workshops and a ceilidh, details of which can be found elsewhere in this issue. There’s also a torchlight parade, providing a fi tting conclusion to a similar municipal gesture that kicked off the Winter Festival back in November, a neat bookend to proceedings that Rabbie himself would have appreciated.

While that’s all about embracing our own heritage, there is actually a wider world out there. (Yeah, we know! Weird!). And it’s somewhere SANDY ALLAN [1] will be telling us about at EDEN COURT on 27 JAN when IN SOME LOST PLACE gives him the opportunity to relate an extraordinary adventure. In 2012, Sandy and his climbing partner Rick Allen reached the summit of Nanga Parbat – one of the his climbing partner Rick Allen reached the summit of Nanga Parbat – one of the world’s deadliest mountains. Widely regarded as the ‘last great climb’ in the Himalayas, the team’s fi rst ascent of the 8,000-metre Mazeno Ridge took eighteen days, three of which were endured without food and water. In 2013, the ascent was awarded the highly coveted Piolet d’Or mountaineering award. Don’t even think about asking him why he did it.

That question might be asked to Felicity Aston who will be at HIGHLAND COUNCIL CHAMBER on 11 JAN for a talk called CHASING WINTER: A JOURNEY TO THE POLE OF COLD, the tale of her journey across northern Scandinavia and Siberia to the coldest inhabited place in the world. Why didn’t she just come to Inverness fi rst?

These are interesting times for Scottish football. The recently unveiled new look League Cup format, with a regional group stage and the groundbreaking adoption of penalty shootouts with an extra point to the winners is certainly something that the English game would do well to take on board. That’s all a year away though and right now this season’s League Cup is coming to a climax, with ROSS COUNTY taking on CELTIC in the semi-fi nal at Hampden on 31 JAN. We all know how good Highland teams are at knocking out the Bhoys on the big stage so County will be hoping for an upset.

In the league meanwhile, Celtic might be as dominant as most expected, but the battle for second is proving far more interesting with Hearts, Aberdeen and – Scotland’s Leicester City – St Johnstone, all putting up a good show. At the beginning of the season ROSS COUNTY looked capable of emulating ICT’s success of last year, but both teams seem to have settled mid-table, meaning EL KESSOCKO in Inverness on 02 JAN isn’t quite as much of a six-pointer as either team would have hoped. Still it should be as entertaining as meetings between the two invariably are these days.

Those who demand a bit more exertion than watching from the terraces will be participating in the aptly named STRATHPUFFER 24 on 23/24 JAN. Now in its eleventh year and involving 17 hours of darkness, this is widely regarded as one of the world’s toughest mountain bike races and over 850 competitors are expected to take part. Conditions are extremely testing, with ice, snow and mud pushing the participants and their bikes to the very limits. Entries sold out in minutes for this now iconic mountain-bike event which attracts riders from all over the UK and beyond. It’s not one for the faint-hearted. If you’d rather just spectate and cheer, it all starts in the square in Strathpeffer.

A quick cheer for the HIGHLAND WILDCATS American Football team who’ve got a new base at Bught Stadium having been turfed out of their old premises thanks to works on the West Link Road. While they might not be the city’s best known sporting squad, they’re to be praised for the work they do with young people in getting them to change their lives for the positive. Expect to read much more about them in the months ahead.

Most of January is pretty much theatre-free which might come as a relief to those of you who overdosed on pantos prior to Xmas. If you’re feeling residual love for fairytales retold though, you don’t have too long to wait as CINDERELLA [1] comes to EDEN COURT from 27–30 JAN courtesy of the always sublime Scottish Ballet. Christopher Hampson’s take on the story is already regarded as one of the very best and acclaimed New Zealand designer Tracy Grant Lord’s luxurious costumes and extravagant sets create a glittering fantasy world. Prokoviev’s soundtrack and SB’s remarkable dancers only serve to emphasise how good this will be.

Dance of a rather different stripe from the equally impressive PLAN B whose AND NOW…is at ARDROSS COMMUNITY HALL on 29 JAN. Refl ecting on the sea change in Scotland in 2014, a tribe of lost children, full of lost charm, innocence and comic disposition enter a beguiling Neverland dreamscape. Accompanied by a powerful ambient score from award winning composer Jim Sutherland, the piece is overlaid with live music from sax player Steve Ketterley. This is the fi rst opportunity to see plan B’s new ensemble - four of Scotland’s most electrifying dancers - Glen McArtney, Joanne Pirrie, Katie Armstrong and Kirsty Pollock.

Few comedians can skewer sacred cows with the verve and precision of RICH HALL [2], the American comedian who, while making Britain his home, continues to provide magnifi cent critiques of his homeland on TV documentaries like Rich Hall’s Continental Drifters, Rich Hall’s The Dirty South and How The West Was Lost. Part love letters, part history lessons and part angry demolition of accepted truths, they’re woven together with an elegantly honed wit and rare eloquence, as indeed are his live stand-up shows, the latest of which, under the banner 3:10 TO HUMOUR comes to EDEN COURT on 01 FEB.

More humour in MUM’S THE WORD 2 at EDEN COURT from 02–06 FEB. One of Scotland’s favourites, MTW2 laughs at the comedic horrors of child and teenager-rearing in this new and updated version of the hit show. Join the mums, now “older and wider”, on their journey into the parenting nightmare that is teenagers. GAIL PORTER, LIBBY MCARTHUR (River City), LORRAINE MCINTOSH (Deacon Blue) JULIE WILSON NIMMO (Balamory) and former Radio Clyde presenter SUZIE MCGUIRE star. More next time.

EATINGOUT

41 Castle Street, Inverness 01463 230 925

Sometimes the food “experience” isn’t all about yanking you forward to a bright new future, but taking you back to a faded, reassuring past. While, as we’ve shown on these pages in the year just gone, Inverness has become something of a leading light in high quality, innovative dining, with an array of food from across the globe available, there are always going to be places that for generations of locals are about much more than the food itself. Perhaps the most notable, and certainly the most enduringly popular with everyone from Invernessian celebs and ex-pats to the average man and woman in the street, is Castle Restaurant.

Talk to anyone about the place and their eyes glaze with fond nostalgia and a kind of unexpressed primal yearning for all the memories and associations that come to mind.

It seems that everyone has their own formative Castle experience, from fi rst family meals out and culinary encounters with

spectacular Knickerbocker Glories to, in the case of one friend, slightly embarrassed recall of long-ago times and lovelorn adolescent encounters with a dashing visiting lorry driver, a liaison that will surely be turned into a wistful Scots movie before too long. Through the years, Castle Restaurant has played a signifi cant part in the emotional lives of many, many people.

Some things have changed though, most notably ownership of the place itself. Having been run by the Lipton family for 57 years it was sold a couple of months back to siblings Katie and Ewen MacKinnon, though the handover seems to have been seamless with the “world famous” steak pie and specially crinkle-cut chips still on the menu.

And even now, with so many other places opening up, the place remains as popular as ever, with a clientele literally ranging in age from eight to eighty. Business is brisk throughout the day, with

obvious peaks at breakfast and lunch, but when we turn up in mid-afternoon, there’s still a constant stream of people coming in and out. Many of them don’t even need to ask for menus, knowing exactly what they want, probably what they’ve ordered and will always order for decades to come.

Outside the skies are grey and snow’s on the way, only serving to emphasise the bright warmth of both surroundings and welcome, a brigade of friendly waitresses working the split-level layout with a quiet enthusiasm that puts the staff of many other places in town to shame.

To start my pal has Melon, a dish that ought to come with its own soundtrack of a phone call saying, “Hi, it’s the seventies, we want our recipe back”. Served in a designed-for-purpose glass bowl, the melon slice is topped with tinned fruit and tastes exactly like you’d expect, which is obviously no bad thing. 3939

My starter of Battered Mushrooms is equally retro and again all the better for it. Maintaining the rich Scottish tradition of deep-frying things, it’s done skilfully, the batter staying crisp and the mushrooms inside retaining some bite. Served with salad and some sort of mayo/tartar affair it’s also a substantial portion, something that many of the Castle’s faithful customers look for above all else.

And when it comes to my main course Mixed Grill, again there’s no skimping on portion size. Steak, liver, sausage, gammon and egg all put in an appearance with, perhaps surprisingly, the brightly-yolked egg and liver being the stand-outs, the latter cooked with some degree of care not, as is so often the case, dried out to the texture of shoe leather. That said, the steak’s slightly on the chewy side and the sausage appears to have only a passing relationship with any sort of meat, so it’s not an unqualifi ed success, especially since it’s a couple of quid more expensive than its equivalent at the likes of Wetherspoons. What ‘Spoons can’t offer though are the Castle’s famous crinkle-cut chips, apparently made using a special machine, though we imagine it’s not likely to be the only one in the world. And what are they like? Well, like er, crinkle-cut crisps, their shape more important than what they taste like, merely a memory trigger to make everyone recall the food of their youth. Unwittingly, Castle Restaurant is providing a nostalgic dining experience that your Heston Blumenthal and his pals have been trying to pin down for years and which could net hipsters millions were this place to be transplanted to Shoreditch.

My pal has Vegetarian Lasagne, because that’s how he rolls and it’s pronounced to have a perfectly fi ne home-made quality, mushrooms and tomatoes being the dominant ingredients and the tinned peas accompanying it a confi dent statement towards Italian cuisine that says, “we do it our way round here”.

Puddings on the menu are supplemented by a selection of home baked options written on a blackboard and displayed impressively in a glass case by the counter. I plump for a Banoffee Pie which suggests that some of the home baking still needs working on, a rock hard pastry tartlet topped with a little toffee sauce, a couple of slices of banana and a ginormous mound of whipped cream, served inexplicably with yet another similar sized cream mountain. My companion is almost duty bound to roll back the decades and try the Banana Split, which turns out to be every bit as crazily rococo as expected, a simple banana pimped into a thing of wonder with tinned fruit salad, psychedelic hundreds and thousands and yet more cream.

It’s kind of a suitable end to the meal, taking us back to our childhoods and just for a moment making the modern world fade into a wibbly-wobbly background. Or perhaps that’s just the sugar getting medieval on the senses. We waddle back to real life with full stomachs and a new found respect for tinned fruit, thinking that while there may be better cooking at other places in town, few competing joints understand quite so well that it’s about much more than what’s on your plate. Whatever its limitations Castle Restaurant is a culinary safe space, where things really are like they used to be. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Every year I get shop gift cards for my birthday, it’s my own fault reallly I’ve forbidden my family from buying me clothes (no one knows what my ‘style’ is – not even me) and they fi nd it diffi cult to keep up with what gadgets I have and what ones I may like to have, and as for choosing CDs or DVDs for me .. well .. a gift card just seems to to be the ideal solution.

So as my birthday approaches I eagerly aticipate the arrival of these cards, enjoying the prospect of spending them – they’re not like real money, I tell myself, so it’s ok to just go into the store and buy the fi rst thing I see that I like, no matter how frivolous it may seem. All very well in theory but in practice... It takes on average three to four months for me to spend my birthday vouchers, and usually by that time the addition of Christmas vouchers has heightened my anxiety. I go to the shop with every intention of just picking up the fi rst thing I like and casually strolling to the checkout with it, but, en route from shelf to cashdesk something changes in me. It dawns that while for me the value of the voucher doesn’t represent real money, that’s not true for the parent or sibling who sent me it. I wouldn’t so casually spend my own hard-earned cash on, this year for example, a Radio Controlled Quad-Copter with built in gyroscopic stabilisation and 2 megapixel camera, so what right have I to spend

theirs on such pointlessness?

So back to the shelf goes the cool – and I mean really cool – gadget and I continue on to the the clothing section to see if there’s a nice practical sweatshirt I might like.Usually there is such a sweatshirt, but equally usually on the way to the till I talk myself out of it. Sure, it’s a sound practical buy, but the voucher was meant as a gift and gifts are supposed to be frivolous, things you wouldn’t usually buy for youself, so the jumper goes back and I head over once again to the Quad-Copter.

By now you’re probably getting the picture, also by now the shop staff are begining to regard me with suspicion, so I generally give up the excersise and go and have a nice calming coffee somewhere. Imagine my joy this year when I discovered that you can spend shop vouchers online! Now I could take as long as I like to choose without the watchful eyes of the shop staff scrutinizing my every move.It took me only a week of nightly online activity to fi nally settle on a cool watch. It’s a gadget but it’s practical too – so everyone’s happy. I even managed to follow the advice of the “Barclays Digital Eagles” and Googled around until I found a 10% off voucher! All that was to be done now was proceed to the checkout and pay for my purchase(s).

I’d heard shopping online was easy so I was already looking forward to popping into the store next day and picking up my classy watch. I had two giftcards totalling £60 and the watch was £72 after discount, no problem I’ll just pay the extra on my debit card. Wrong! Turns out you can only pay with two types of payment, so I couldn’t use both gift cards.

When I phoned the help-line for advice on my quandry the girl suggested I simply use one giftcard and put the rest (£42) on my debit card. Hmm, yes that’s right, afterall why spend just 12 pounds in a shop when you can spend 42! Needless to say I declined this offer leaving me to suffer the only viable alternative - going into the actual shop to have my two giftcards merged into one .. then coming back home to buy the watch online because it’s not something they stock locally! All-in-all it took a week of browsing, a ten minute phone call to customer services, two trips to the virtual checkout and two to the physical shop to spend my vouchers – mind you that’s still a good three months less than last year.

Thing is I’ll have forgotten all this by next birthday, when I’ll no doubt hear myself say “just get me a giftcard, it save a whole lot of hassle”.
