RICK’S WRAP UP

WOW...March was a great month for DSPNT and while we have much to celebrate we also know there is so much more to accomplish within the Down syndrome community and the communities in which we all live. March started out with a bang as myself and board members, Heather Landeros, Saqib Mujtaba , Cory Boggess, and Sarah Blackwall attended the DSAIA leadership conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. While Las Vegas seems like a fun city to be in, DSAIA kept us very busy with various breakout sessions and networking opportunities geared towards leadership and managing an effective Ds organization from both a staff and board perspective. We all came back with lots of great ideas and contacts in order to make our own partnership even better. Not long after the conference we hosted a New Parents Brunch and had seven new families attend this event. As you all know, these new parent meetings are to introduce and welcome new families to our organization, but even more importantly, they are to comfort and support new parents with little ones who have Ds and let them know they are not alone in the journey ahead. What a privilege it is to be there for these new families! Towards the end of March we all kicked it up a notch in celebration of WDSD. Not only did we have a great venue for our balloon release and dance at Northwood Church but we all made the world take notice (literally) as we lit up the Dallas skyline in our blue and yellow colors in order to generate awareness for Ds. Other great landmarks such as the Empire State Building were also lit up to celebrate 3/21. All in all I believe we had landmarks throughout the U.S, Canada, and even Australia participate. I for one cannot wait until next year as we build off our momentum in 2015. In the next several months we are going to be very active with various events such as our seminar with Dr. Libby Kumin, our DADS golf tournament, iCan Bike camp, swim party, annual conference and of course Buddy Walk. In addition to these events, our Board of Directors is working on some very exciting and new initiatives for DSPNT that I can't wait to share...when the time is right, so in the mean time please make sure you stay connected to our web site and social media and always know my door, email, and phone are always open to your suggestions, concerns, and feedback. As always, thank you for your support and I hope you have a blessed Easter weekend which is right around the corner.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF JONATHAN BOYD

It is with great sadness that we inform you that DSPNT & Club 321 member Jonathan Boyd passed away on March 7, 2015. He was 26 years old. Born on April 25, 1988, in Fort Worth, Jonathan was a lifelong resident of Cowtown, as well as an active member of Stadium Drive Baptist Church. A 2010 graduate of North Crowley High School, he was a fan of the Crowley ISD sports teams. He was a sports fan who, like many fellow Texans, reveled in Friday night high school football games, often attending games with his dad. He was a huge fan of WWE Wrestling, collecting action figures and watching programs of his favorites, Kane and Undertaker. As a sports fan, he also rooted for many local teams, including the Baylor Bears and the Dallas Cowboys. He not only watched sports, but competed in the Texas Special Olympics, excelling in state competitions in bowling, basketball, and several track and field sports. After high school he attended Green Oaks School until his death. He was a Christian, a Boy Scout, and an immediate friend to anyone who crossed his path. He loved to joke around, make anyone laugh, and give the biggest hugs. He also loved his "puppy," Sidney, a 12-year-old black labrador.

We send our deepest condolences to Jonathan’s family. He will be deeply missed.

MEET THE MYERS FAMILY

As many of you know, DSPNT provides a New Parent Basket with various books and gifts to our new families. We recently received the following letter from the Myers family to our President Misty Holmes:

I read about your family in Thrive magazine and wanted to let you know about my eight year old daughter's gift bags. Sophia puts together two books, Gifts

and Gifts 2 by Kathryn Lynard Soper, along with new, safe baby toys into gift bags and our neighbor who is a NICU nurse, takes them to

Children's Medical Center in Dallas. After reading the article written about your family she wanted to contact you so she could donate the 16

gift bags that she has ready to the Parents First Call Program.

This picture is Sophia and her sister, Georgie who is about to turn 6 in March. Georgie is holding one of the bags.

Thanks,

Andreanna Myers

We are so appreciative of Sophie’s generosity. Donations like these are what allows DSPNT to provide top notch services to new families. To find out how you can make a donation, please contact us at (817) 390-2970.
