ICDL 2010 Exam – Grade 8 Student’s Guide Basic Questions Many of the questions will be quite simple. They will ask you to choose the correct menu item, toolbar, or keyboard shortcut to perform basic functions.

Revision Hints & Tips:

Learn the functions accessed from the File | Page Setup menu. Learn the functions of the main toolbar buttons Learn the functions of the keyboard shortcuts. Remember that “Enter” (also known as “Return”)

is a keyboard shortcut – it creates a new blank line at the current insertion point. Learn how to select text with a mouse.

o Single-click places the cursor at the point you click o Double-click selects the word you clicked on o Triple-click selects the paragraph you clicked on

Review the Mail Merge functions – both the toolbar and the Task Pane actions. e.g: Clicking the “Edit individual letters...” function in the task pane allows you to merge files to either the printer or a new document.

How to insert a Page Break (Ctrl-Enter), Hard Return (Enter), Soft Return (Shift-Enter). Moving an image or selected text is performed by using Cut then Paste. Print more than one copy by using the File |Print menu. Print a single copy with the default settings by using the Print button on the toolbar. To show or hide non-printing characters, press the Show/Hide button on the toolbar

To copy only the formatting of selected text, and then apply that formatting to other text, use

the Format Painter

Page 7: ICDL 2010 Exam – Grade 8 Student’s Guide - Channel Steveict.channelsteve.com/grade8/ICDL_revision/ICDL 2010 Exam Study... · ICDL 2010 Exam – Grade 8 Student’s Guide Objectives

ICDL 2010 Exam – Grade 8 Student’s Guide Advanced Questions Many questions are written to test your comprehension of English expression. Here are some examples. Read each question very carefully. Watch for information on which method to use – menu item, toolbar button or keyboard shortcut.

Q. Which of the following best describes the action, change the zoom view to page width?

Viewing text, margin to margin Viewing typed text, page edge to page edge Viewing typed text, 100% zoom Viewing typed text by the Whole Page

The answer is highlighted in yellow. The reason is because “page width” means from one edge of the paper to the other edge.

Q. The Word feature that best describes advancing the insertion point to a preset line position or to align columns is...

Indentation Tab Stop Alignment Spacing

The answer is highlighted in yellow. Pressing the Tab key advances your cursor to the next preset Tab Stop and is also used to align columns. “Indentation” is the process of advancing the insertion point to the preset Indent <arker. As you can see, it’s very important to read the question carefully.

Q. This feature is used to indent text to a preset horizontal position for the current line

Indentation Tab Stop Alignment Spacing

The answer is highlighted in yellow. This is similar to the last question, but this time it uses the word “indent”, which is your key to the answer.

Q. Inserting the word, Freecall, at the current insertion point will...

Replace text to the left of the insertion point Insert text to the left of the insertion point Insert text to the right of the insertion point Replace text to the right of the insertion point

Page 8: ICDL 2010 Exam – Grade 8 Student’s Guide - Channel Steveict.channelsteve.com/grade8/ICDL_revision/ICDL 2010 Exam Study... · ICDL 2010 Exam – Grade 8 Student’s Guide Objectives

ICDL 2010 Exam – Grade 8 Student’s Guide The answer is highlighted in yellow. This question requires an understanding of the key words – insert, “to the left” and “insertion point”. When you start to type, your text will be inserted into the document at the current insertion point.

Q. You want to insert text at the current insertion point. Which of the below applies?

The new text will automatically merge to the 2nd cell of the current row The new text will automatically wrap within the current cell The new text will automatically extend the cell width to fit the text The new text will be automatically truncated when the maximum cell width is reached

The answer is highlighted in yellow. A cell is one box within the table. The default behaviour for a cell is that the text wraps once you reach the end of the cell.

Q. A form document and a data document are required to successfully generate which of the above Word functions?

Table of Contents Mail Merge Document Index Table of Authorities

The answer is highlighted in yellow. A mail merge combines a letter (form) with some data to create letters for multiple recipients.

Q. Before final output of your Word document, which of the above proofing activities would be most beneficial?

Document Layout Consistent Text Styles Spelling and Grammar Check All of the above

The answer is highlighted in yellow. It is important to proof-read your document to ensure it is completely ready for others to read. You should check that the layout (margins, orientation and paper size) is correct, that the fonts and text styles are consistent, and that spelling and grammar are correct.
