Connectivity and Disk Configuration 5

Chapter 1: Connectivity and Disk Configuration

This section contains the following topics:

Client Connectivity (see page 5) Disk Configuration (see page 6)

Icebreaker combines the Ingres 2006 RDBMS and a Linux-based operating system (rPath Linux) in a single integrated maintenance unit. It is designed to run on x86-compatible, 32-bit capable server hardware or a virtual server environment (such as VMware).

Icebreaker provides product updates to all components of the system in an integrated maintenance stream. For the system to download updates as they become available, it must be configured to access the Internet and must register a valid entitlement key.

For more information on system requirements, see the readme.

Client Connectivity The default configuration includes the Ingres 2006 database, networking, and Applications-By-Forms (ABF). This configuration accepts connections from client applications based on Ingres Net, JDBC, ODBC, and .Net using the TCP/IP protocol.

Firewall Settings

For added security, the system is configured with an internal firewall that is configured to allow access to the following services:

Service Protocol Port

Ingres Net TCP 21064

Ingres DAS (JDBC, ODBC, .Net) TCP 21071

rPath Appliance Agent (rAA) HTTPS/TCP 8003

SSH TCP 22

Disk Configuration

6 Icebreaker Installation and Configuration Guide

Disk Configuration Ingres recommends a server configuration that includes multiple physical disks or storage volumes to avoid a single point of failure. For detailed information on requirements to help ensure that the system can be recovered in the event of a disk failure, see DBMS Server Disk Configurations in the Ingres 2006 Getting Started for Linux guide, available from Ingres Technical Support (http://ingres.com/support).

Icebreaker groups together under various mount points the storage areas that the Ingres DBMS uses. These are described in the following table. This configuration makes it easier to implement the recommendations outlined in the Getting Started guide. When you install the product, we recommend that you select separate storage devices for each of the following mount points:

Mount Point DBMS Area Subdirectories

/opt/Ingres/IngresII II_SYSTEM ingres/*

/opt/Ingres/DATABASE II_DATABASE ingres/data

II_CHECKPOINT ingres/ckp

II_JOURNAL ingres/jnl

/opt/Ingres/BACKUP

II_DUMP ingres/dmp

II_LOG_FILE ingres/log /opt/Ingres/LOG1

II_WORK ingres/work

Installing Icebreaker 7

Chapter 2: Installing Icebreaker

This section contains the following topics:

Exceptions in the Example Installation (see page 7) Install Icebreaker (see page 7) First Boot of Icebreaker (see page 18)

Before you install Icebreaker, review the exceptions to the default installation used in the examples throughout the remainder of this chapter.

Exceptions in the Example Installation The installation example detailed in this document was performed on a VMware Server virtual machine configured with default hardware, except for the following items:

Seven hard disk drives (HDDs) specified, 2 GB each

Note: Using seven HDDs illustrates the automatic disk layout feature of the installation process. Using seven HDDs is not a requirement of Icebreaker, and does not replace any recommendations of Ingres Corporation regarding disk layouts for Ingres RDBMS installations.

CD-ROM set to “Use ISO image” (an ISO 9660 file system image of the Icebreaker CD)

Ethernet set to “NAT” (use network address translation)

Install Icebreaker You install Icebreaker from the installation media using the installation wizard.

To install Icebreaker

1. Insert the Icebreaker installation media in the CD drive of an x86-compatible, 32-bit capable server or machine with a virtual environment (such as VMware).

2. Start the server machine or virtual environment, or reboot it if it is already running.

Install Icebreaker

8 Icebreaker Installation and Configuration Guide

3. When the server or virtual environment boots, select the CD drive containing the Icebreaker installation media as the boot device.

When the CD boots, it displays the following prompt:

4. Press Enter to start the installation wizard in graphical mode.

Some hardware drivers are loaded in text mode, and after a short delay, the graphical interface opens. Help for each screen is displayed by default on the left. You can hide the help by clicking Hide Help.

Click Next.

7. Select how you want your disk to be partitioned.

The “Automatically partition” option creates a typical starting point, and allows you to review and make changes before the installer finalizes the configuration.

Click Next.

8. Select individual disks to install to.

Note: If there is only one drive, it will be selected but grayed out.

Ensure that the “Review (and modify if needed) the partitions created” option is selected, so that you can change the partitioning later, if necessary.

A warning message about destroying data on each disk appears:

Click Yes to continue the partitioning process.

9. Review the results of the automatic partitioning and, if desired, change the partitioning.

For example, the following shows a modification of the “/” partition. (The “/” partition was highlighted, and then the Edit button clicked.)

When you are finished, click Next.

10. Configure the network devices.

The following example shows DHCP as operational but not configured to provide hostnames, so a hostname must be entered manually (as Appliance0):

Note: If the IP address of the system will be obtained by DHCP, you should keep a record of the network device detailed previously (in this example, eth0). However, we recommend that, instead of DHCP, you choose a static IP address by clicking the Edit button.

When you are finished, click Next.

11. Specify and confirm a root password for the Icebreaker server, and click Next.

The installer reads package information before displaying the next screen.

12. Select Ingres RDBMS packages for installation.

Note: Some infrequently used and legacy interoperability packages are not installed by default, but you may include these here, either individually or by selecting the “Everything” option at the bottom of the list.

Click Next.

The installer checks package dependency, which may take some time.
