ABOUT ICF - Part III by Sri R.Srinivasan, APE/PR/F, Ph:9003141449, [email protected]

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT : ABOUT ICF NOV-2015.

SELF ROPELLED VEHICLES

This concept became necessary because 1. Some of the arterial routes not necessarily electrified. 2. Even in electrified section, infrastructure can’t support the unconventional body of EMU’s restricted clearances & low level platforms. 3. Electric & Diesel locos when used for running short distance, they are much under utilised.

To overcome the above problems, ICF has developed DEMU , MEMU , DHMU etc.,

DEMU ( DIESEL ELECTRIC MULTIPLE UNIT)

DEMU is formed by joining two or more “consists”. A “consist” or “unit” has one DPC i.e. Diesel Power Car (where the wheel sets- each mounted on an axle - are driven by traction motors through pinion-gear pair) with 2 or 3 Trailer Cars (TCs). The propulsion system of a DPC typically has a low

power Diesel Engine as prime mover coupled with a Traction Alternator. A DEMU train could comprise of two or three DPCs.

Thus, power generated per unit is much higher than a conventional train and so is the acceleration. As a result, these trains can stop & start quickly and consume less power than a locomotive in doing so. Like EMUs, the DEMUs are also bi-directional trains

with Driving Cars on both ends, unlike normal trains that require reversal or change of locomotive at terminals stations. Thus DEMU is an ideal solution against the requirement of local trains on non-electrified rail sections.

Variants of DEMU:

(1)DEMU

ICF started manufacturing the DEMUs in1996. Initial makes were 3-car units comprising one DPC, one TC & one DTC (Driving Trailer Car). About 100 such DEMUs were made between 1996

and 2002. However, these units had inherent drawback of poor pick-up and slow speed.

DPC with 700 HP Diesel Engines. Small integrated alternator, for power supply to traction motor. Car run in multiple units of 3 , 6 , 9 . Salient features: • Cushioned seats ,tinted glasses on windows , adequate

fans , fluorescent lights . • UIC vestibules. • Brake : Gradually release twin pipe air brakes. • Transmission : Electrical (AC/DC) • Cooling system : Hydrostatic fan drive • Control & Aux.supply : 110V DC

Capacity Type Sitting Standing Total DPC 72 72 144 DTC 108 216 324 TC 108 216 324 3 car unit 288 504 792

(2)High Horse Power (HHP) DEMUs To overcome the issues in original demu, High Horse

Power (HHP) DEMUs with 1400 hp engines were introduced in year 2000. This HHP DEMU has 4-car consist with one DPC and

3 TCs. Two such units are normally joined to make a train. Difficulties faced in the 700 hp DEMUs are largely

overcome with such HHP DEMUs. Advantages: • Double the power of 700 HP DEMU ie 1400 HP • Better operating performance in terms of

acceleration rate • Greater capacity as 1 TC added • Air spring for better riding quality • Electrical insulation scheme used on the motor &

alternator is superior to the old version • Better reliability. Rake formation – 8 cars DPC +TCV +TCG+TCG+TCG+TCG+TCV+DPC DPC – Driving Power CarTCV - Trailer Car (Vendor) TCG – Trailer Car (General) Max. Speed 105 kmph Passenger capacity, weight DPC TCV TCG Per

Series manufacture of 1600hp AC-AC DEMU train

sets has started from 2015, production of 1400hp DEMU will be stopped from 2015.

Salient Features : • CORTEN steel body • CORTEN steel aerodynamic nose at front end of DPC

(since 2013) • 1400HP engine (Model – Cummins KTA50L or CAT

35088) • Locomotive Control Console for Excitation and

Propulsion Control • Ladies and physically disabled person compartments in

DPC

• On-board Diesel –Electric AC – DC Transmission with BHEL or CGL Electrics. Traction Motors with Roller Suspension Bearings.

• Each DPC with belt driven On – board Auxiliary Alternator for Train Lighting and Fans in Trailer Coaches

• Five 19 core electrical cables with inter-vehicular couplers for Train Line Wiring in TCs and Control Communication across DPCs

• FRP Driver’s desk • Two pivoted doors one at each end and two middle

sliding doors aside in case of DPC • Fully vestibulated unit for inter coach passenger

movements • Stainless steel centre duct lighting • PU foam cushion seats with fire retardant upholstery

with stainless steel frames • Interior with LP sheet and SS panels for ceiling • PVC flooring in compartments and Aluminium

chequered sheet floor at doorways • Lift up type Aluminium window frame with fixed glass

FAQs from Readers and Patients

? Q: Thank you very much for the detailed description about posture for the last 9 months. As a common man how could I know about posture deviation? Is there any self evaluation method?

*Thanks for your interest in self care! Good posture is essential for preventing not only back, neck and other joints pain but also for other ailments too as listed out in initial issue of posture. For obtaining a good posture, it’s not easy always to keep everything in alignment. Hence self evaluation is necessary for one to prevent posture deviation and to maintain a good posture. Prompt posture assessment is a tough task without assistance of others especially professionals. Self evaluation is also not an easy one to test on your own. But the best way to check this on your self is to do a visual check in the mirror and wall test. Test 1: visual check in the mirror:

To get a correct assessment and clear visual check …

• Stand in front of mirror wearing briefs (for female means in inner wears).

• Stand with relaxed and hands hanged and bare feet.

• Check the alignment one by one from head to toe all regions in the mirror.

Test 2: Wall test :

• Stand with back against the wall with your feet about few inches (6”) from the wall.

• When standing against the wall with three posture points slightly touch the wall.

• Back of your head. • Shoulder blades and • Waist. • Hands should hang naturally at

your sides. • Place your hand between your back

and the wall. • Check the distance between the

wall and back. Note: If you get one hand width (1-2 inches) gap at low back is you are maintaining good posture.

Some postural deviations are given below… Perfect Image

Note: All these above observations will help you figure out suspicion only. But to determine the deviations consult your doctor and then therapist for prompt progressive correction exercises and prevent back ailments. Q. In the last two issues on scoliosis corrective exercises you have described some exercises for one side only .Why ? Yes ! you are correct . These are corrective exercises. In scoliosis the curve is either on the left or right side. Convex is usually more seen on the left . Hence exercises described for the correction of the same. As given in the instruction note better consult your doctor and physiotherapist for prompt corrective care.

Wishing you a Joyful healthy, happy and Pain-free NEW YEAR 2016
