BANGLADESH WATER DEVELOPMENT BOARD (BWDB) BANGLADESH WATER DEVELOPMENT BOARD (BWDB) BANGLADESH WATER DEVELOPMENT BOARD (BWDB) BANGLADESH WATER DEVELOPMENT BOARD (BWDB)
A statutory body under the Ministry
of Water Resources, Government of
Bangladesh.
BANGLADESH WATER DEVELOPMENT BOARD (BWDB) BANGLADESH WATER DEVELOPMENT BOARD (BWDB) BANGLADESH WATER DEVELOPMENT BOARD (BWDB) BANGLADESH WATER DEVELOPMENT BOARD (BWDB)
Development of rivers, flood control, drainage, surface irrigation
By Constructing dams, barrages, reservoirs, embankments, regulators
Improvement of water flows
By dredging, re-excavation and de-siltation of water channels.
Protection of places of historical and public importance
By river training and river bank protection works
Flood forecasting and warning
By Flood Forecasting and Warning Center
Development of water user’s association
By training and participating in all project phases.
Water Logging: due to absence of adequate drainage route (Beel Dakatia).
River Pollution: mainly due to industrial effluent, domestic sewage,
encroachment
BWDB CHALLENGESBWDB CHALLENGESBWDB CHALLENGESBWDB CHALLENGES Flood: A common phenomenon in Bangladesh
1996
Urban Drainage Congestion: due to Backwater effect of river flooding,
Hindrance by infrastructures
River Bank Erosion: A major impact of river flooding at the time of
recession
Inundation: due to placement of dam or other intervention (fringe area in
the Kaptai reservoir). But often no distinction is made between flooding
and inundation.
CURRENT ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES CURRENT ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES CURRENT ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES CURRENT ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Improvement of water flows of Buriganga river
By dredging, re-excavation and de-siltation of water channels.
Buriganga river pollution around Dhaka city
mainly due to industrial effluent, domestic sewage, encroachment.
BURIGANGABURIGANGABURIGANGABURIGANGA RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT Background
Water flow declined significantly
Water became polluted Posing serious threat
Does not receive flows from the feeder river
Nearly no flow condition during dry season.
To meet the above issues and challenges the Project has been
taken up for achieving sustainable development by water
diversion of Jamuna river.

 Objective of the Project
Specific objectives: maintain dry season minimum flow for
Improving water quality
Meeting navigational depth
At the peripheral rivers of the Dhaka city.
 Others
 Irrigation and fisheries development.
Improvement of overall economic, social & environmental condition.
Unauthorized encroachment control along Buriganga River
BURIGANGABURIGANGABURIGANGABURIGANGA RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT Main Physical component of the project:
Dredging/re-excavation of Rivers 162.5 km Stop Log Sand barrier 1 no. Flush sluice 1 no. Training Bank 300 m Sediment Basin 1 no.
 Project Cost: Tk. 24440.00 million
BURIGANGABURIGANGABURIGANGABURIGANGA RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT Challenges
New Dhaleswari off-take been silting up regularly
Solution: Off-take management by different structures
Dredging may damage foundations of 22 bridges
Solution: Re-construction and foundation treatment
Reduction of planned dredging section
Illegal Encroachment along the river system
