In the friendship programme between Ichinomiya-city and Treviso-city in Italy the schoolchildren have been exchanging picture letters and college students from Italy have held fashion shows using the textiles made in Bishu. And so the "bonds" and "ties" between the two cities have been deepened. Wishing the relation of both cities would deepen further, with the key theme of "Italy", a fair was held where participants enjoyed some music, sweets and experienced different types of events together. And in addition, this charity event was held with the theme of hope towards the successful reconstruction of the northeastern area of Japan.

We walked a lot! We ate a lot! With families and foreign guests

One warm fall day, we walked 5.2 km around the Ichinomiya City Office, Kisogawa branch with foreign guests. We divided into 7 groups and walked the course.

In general, about 50 members including elementary school students and mothers with babies joined. This time Guido and Jackleen, Ichinomiya Coordinators of International Relations and their friends joined

the program. Also, students studying abroad at Nagoya University, and an exchange student of Kisogawa high school

joined. In total, foreign guests from 7 different countries got together for this project which was started 4 years ago for local people to enjoy walking and eating foreign dishes.

We walked past a monument of the birth of a Japanese painter and the site of Kuroda castle where Yamauchi Kazutoyo lived and volunteer members asked guests some quiz questions at each place of interest.

The children seemed to be looking forward to eat barbeque and foreign dishes after walking. They kept on powerfully walking ahead. It was a slightly humid day, but everyone reached the end and happily drank the bottle of tea which was prepared for each of them.

After that, barbequed Brazilian beef and big sausages were cooked for the participants. One male Uzbek exchange student of Nagoya University made a dish called “Plov” which is seasoned rice with mutton. According to him, it is very popular in Uzbekistan and they always eat it when they celebrate something.

A host family who he stayed with a few years ago came to this event and they looked happy to meet up with him again and eat his Plov. Everyone ate a lot and their physical fatigue seemed to drain away.

I can understand why this program is always popular. If we join once, you are definitely inspired to join again!

We made handmade cakes and Soba together! In the cooking room of the Youth Center

(Seinen no Ie) on December 3, 2011

“Dish out the sweets on to plates!” were cue words for all participants to start. Most of the children were

usually quiet, but they looked excited that day. The Christmas party started around ten o’clock. The cooking room was filled with fifteen children from three countries and volunteers.

First, the party began with a popular bingo game. Then, Soba Making started on another table. The table was crowded with the participants who first saw Soba making. Soba was skillfully made using buckwheat flour.

The volunteers baked sponge cakes and cut them into pieces for everyone. The children decorated them. It was interesting to see that such decoration reflected each child’s personality. It seemed as if a variety of colors, such as that of strawberries and melons, let them forget their daily troubles. With a big smile and posing in front of these decorated cakes, some of the children got their pictures taken.

Everything was ready. Everyone enjoyed eating cakes and other sweets set on the tables. Each child said, “Yummy! “. “It’s delicious!” or “Sabroso (delicious in Spanish)”, said the adult volunteers, when they were eating the boiled soba.

All of them enjoyed this heartwarming party with delicious food.

The three Nihongo Hiroba classes each held exchange parties for guest volunteers in December of 2011.

“快来分蛋糕阿!”大家召唤着孩子们,孩子们更是兴高采烈,拿着切好的水果块儿装饰着蛋糕,个个聚精会神忘记

了平日的苦,满意地欣赏自己的“作品” ,并举起双手做着各种姿势,摄下喜悦。

所有的工作整理完毕,合掌:“いただきます!”“哇!真好吃!”“It’s delicious!”“Sabroso!”

Sending our love from Ichinomiya to Treviso!

Little Italy has arrived in Ichinomiya!

Downtown Ichinomiya bustled with people who came to the first time event “We are friends all around the world! Italian Fair 2011: in hopes of supporting Tohoku’s reconstruction.” One of Ichinomiya’s current Coordinators of International Relations, Guido Scarabello, happens to be from Treviso in Italy. With his fluent Japanese and various Italian gestures, he introduced Italian traditions and culture. The audience also gave applause to the Italian musicians and the student wind band that performed on the special stage. In Hommachi shopping arcade, there were many interesting booths such as a fair-trade workshop, a knitting café, a cotton candy demonstration booth, sweets stalls and more.

The Republic of Italy is a partner country in the friendship program which began as a result of the 2005 World Expo Aichi. This friendship programme has been introduced many times in this newsletter previously; Imaise Nishi elementary school children exchange picture letters with elementary school kids in Treviso, and up-and-coming fashion design students from Treviso are selected through a contest to take part in an educational trip to Ichinomiya. We expect both cities to keep these programmes to deepen exchange, and attain the goal of a sister city relationship.

Let’s do what we can,

for the future of the children! “Good Morning!” cry the children, filling the room

with their cheerful voices. This is a common scene at the Nihongo Hiroba Junior class, which is held every Saturday morning at the Youth Center (Seinen no Ie). This class is held for children whose mother tongue is not Japanese. The children are from different countries and they learn Japanese with the help of voluntary teachers. Every time, between 5 to 10 children enjoy learning in accordance with their own abilities.

“Excuse me, I can’t understand this”, to such a

question from a child, the teacher always explains with a smile.

In the very beginning, these children were very nervous and could not communicate with their teachers at all. But nowadays, they can do a Kanji dictation and even write a composition. One of the volunteer staff said: “I had difficulties sometimes with the children until I became more familiar with them. But I am happy when I can assist them in some way.” More recently, most of the children are getting used to the volunteer teachers and talk in a friendly way with them about their family, their future hopes and so on.

“Nihongo Hiroba Junior” was established three years

ago in 2009. And since last year its activities have begun expanding. Japanese language classes have opened in some elementary schools at which many children of foreign nationalities attend.

Presently, a little under 70-children who need support learning Japanese have registered at elementary and junior high-schools in Ichinomiya city. The Ichinomiya City Board of Education sends to each school a total of 9 Japanese Language Advisors. These advisors can speak both the mother tongue of the children and Japanese, and provide support for their learning of Japanese and offer advice to the children using their mother tongue. The number of children who need this support has been increasing yearly. And there are also children who cannot attend the Nihongo Hiroba Junior class for various reasons.

Three years have passed since the ‘Nihongo Hiroba Junior’ class was opened.

There are various reasons for children, who do not understand the Japanese language, to live in Japan. The problems which children experience here are not as simple as not understanding the language. But in saying that, wherever children live, education is the most essential and important part of life for them. The staff of the Nihongo Hiroba are eager to assist the children to help enable them to live with confidence wherever they are.

Ichinomiya International Association (iia) continues to promote the Nihongo Hiroba Junior project to further build the society in which both Japanese and foreign residents can help each other learn to live together with respect towards one another’s culture and customs.

Taking this in to consideration, Ichinomiya International Association (iia) this year held a series of seminars titled: “Teaching Children Japanese as a Second Language’’. The purpose of these seminars held over a two month period, was to give better support to the children. During this series of seminars, lessons detailing how to teach Japanese were given and possibilities of new activities and approaches to teaching were discussed.

For the latter half of these seminars, the following persons were requested to attend by iia; a person from the City Board of Education, volunteer staff, Japanese Language Advisors, and teachers on active service. Various problems facing the children were discussed and several opinions were exchanged amongst the participants. One of the attendees stated this; “For the first time we have recognized that there are children who are under very hard situations. We wish to give them assistance as much as possible”

Hi! Neighbor

Ms. Afurong Jheroliza De Guzman, from Luzon in the Philippines, heard from a Japanese grandmother from Kumamoto prefecture as follows. "Japan is a very beautiful country and the Japanese are the most diligent people in the world".

When I came to Fukui Prefecture six years ago, I was surprised that the cold climate in Japan was completely different from the hot climate of the Philippine’s. Also, I saw snow for the first time since arriving here.

Then I moved to Ichinomiya-city and am working now at a factory in Hashima-city. In the office I’ve made many friends, and making conversation with my superiors has been good practice for my Japanese. The most pleasant thing in my life is "work". Since there is a lot of opportunity for work, I can buy various things and am still able to send some money home to my relatives. I am very much satisfied with my present life, and my impression that the Japanese people are diligent has still not changed.

I am the mother of two daughters in elementary school. In regards to the communications with the school there is no trouble for me thanks to the Philippino staff and the volunteers who are assigned to their school. But I do think it would be good if I could assist my daughters with their homework a little more.

I still have a lot of things I want to do and places I would like to go. But I would like to live in Japan for a long time and gradually be able to realize my dreams.

Because, I love JAPAN!

AFURONG JHEROLIZA DE GUZMAN
