INTRODUCTION

For this assignment we were required to form a group of 2. In the group of 2

students, we needed to find a specific empty land to initiate a small construction

project.

The size of the land shall between 900m2 (30m x 30m) – 1200m2 (30m x 40m). We

had to propose one project that serves one of the following purpose; Recreation

area, Commercial area, Industrial area, Agricultural area, Tourism area,

Residential area.

The objectives of this project is to enable students to develop an understanding of

the building team, its organization, duties and inter-relations within which they

will seek employment, career progression or further study. Besides, to develop an

awareness of their professional responsibilities and to appreciate their profession

in the construction industry.

INTRODUCTION TO OUR SITE

The area we chose as our site is an empty unused land space located near a

residential area. We chose this site because it is a neglected space that is

undeveloped. It has become a wasted land and the area has the potential to be a

commercial area.

A photo of our site. It has

been neglected and unused

for a long time.

The empty land of our site

filled with rubbish and waste

products.

The site is located nearby a

residential area and a

commercial area.

SITE ANALYSIS

- The size of our site is approximately 4600m2

- The site is located next to a traffic light junction

- The traffic flow is depends on the peak hours. It can vary from slow to fast

depending on the time of the day

- The soil is suitable for building a single story structure

- The ground is flat and suitable to build new structures

ADVANTAGES

The advantage of our site is that it is located on a flat land instead of high land.

This makes it easier to construct the building in a safe and productive way. It also

consumes less time.

Furthermore, the site is located nearby a commercial area, residential area and a

university. Therefore, it is likely to attract a lot of people. Besides that, our site is

an open space and is easily noticeable.

Moreover, our site is 5 minutes away from the highway, 2 minutes away from

Taylors University Lakeside Campus and 5 minutes away from Sunway Pyramid

and Sunway Hospital.

DISADVANTAGES

The disadvantages of our site is that there are no trees or plants surrounding the

site. Therefore, the condition of the site is very hot and stuffy.

Furthermore, there is heavy traffic on the main road in front of the site, every day

from 6pm -7pm.

Finally the site is in bad condition due to it being heavily neglected by the

community.

RATIONALE

After analyzing and observing our site, we came up with a common concept that

our site should be used to build an entertainment center.

By analyzing and observing the surrounding area of the site, we were able to pin

point of the weakness of the surrounding area of the site. The outcome of this

observation lead us to propose to build an entertainment center on our site.

Some of the observations are as follows:

- The area and community lacks a place to relax.

The community is very busy as it’s main income source comes from the

commercial area nearby. There is no place for both old and young people to

relax and have fun.

- The undeveloped land (our site) is not maintained well.

The empty land that we choose for our site is not developed and is poorly

maintained. The site is filled with rubbish and waste. This is very unhygienic

and unsafe for the residents that live nearby as it can cause illness such as

dengue if no action is taken.

- The University students do not have a nearby place to relax.

The nearest source of entertainment outside their campus for students of

Taylors University Lakeside Campus is Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall

which is about 10 minutes away. The constant heavy traffic and the inability

to find car park at Sunway Pyramid makes it very impractical to go to.

Therefore, an entertainment center located at our site would be an ideal

place for the students to take a break from their studies.

CONCEPT

OBJECTIVES OF PROPOSAL

The objectives that we are looking to full fill by proposing the new concept is:

- Provide a place to relax for the residents and community.

- Prevent the use of empty land as a waste land.

- Provide a more environmental friendly area.

- Provide a place for the students of the university to relax.

RATIONALE OF OUR CONCEPT

Our concept is to build an entertainment center on our site. We plan to put both

a bowling alley and a pool center in our building. The building will be a single

storey building as it would be much more cost effective. The concept of our site

must be able to provide a place to relax for the both young and old residents in

the community.

ADVANTAGES OF OUR CONCEPT

A bowling alley is proposed to entertain both children and adults of the

community, while a pool center is for individuals above 18 years old. Besides that,

the entertainment center would also prevent the waste of space and prevent the

empty land from being filled with rubbish. This will help improve the environment

of the surrounding area. The building would also provide entertainment to the

university students as Taylors University Lakeside Campus is located nearby the

building.

LOCATION PLAN

Location plan usually consist of the main building site and 2 road names. By

having this, local authorities are able to identify the location of the site. For our

project, our site is located next to a traffic light junction.

RESEARCH

LIGHTING

Pool table lights are lights that are installed above a pool table to create a warm

atmosphere on your pool table. With proper lights, you can also alleviate any

shadows or glares while you enjoy a relaxing game of pool. These lights make the

game more enjoyable and ensure that you do not strain your eyes or irritate them

due to poor lighting; thus the importance of a good bulb. Each shade on these

light fixtures is carefully crafted so as to meet regulation sizes.

The different types of light available

When you are choosing lights for your pool table, you can select from 4 standard

types. The standard types are the ones that you will commonly find when

shopping for your pool table lighting. The 4 types of pool table lights are:

3 shade lights

4 shade lights

5 shade lights

Tiffany lights

BOWLING MACHINE

Pin Setter

Once a ball is thrown, a mechanical sweeper comes down and pushes the pins

onto a rubber mat behind the lane. The pins are then fed into a pin wheel, which

carries the pins back to the setting basket. Once the required pins are in the

basket, it drops and sets the pins back up.

Ball Return

The bowling ball hits the rubber mat and is fed onto a track called a ball wheel,

which carries the ball toward the ball return. Inside, long motorized rubber belts

carry the ball from beside the pin deck all the way back to where the bowlers are

positioned.

Oiling Machine

Bowling alley oiling machines are run over the lanes periodically to strip the alley

of any existing oil while placing a new layer on top. Since oil conditions

deteriorate over time due to excessive traffic, the oil must be stripped and then

reapplied to ensure each lane has an even distribution.
