iComputeOverviewIn this unitthe children begin to understand that images are represented by numbers in computers.

They will use simple keys to encode and decode pixel art.

Objectives¬ To decode simple digital images by colouring pixels

VocabularyImage; pixel; grid; code; decode; key; pattern

iCompute iColour Pixels Ages 4-6

¬ Show the children WorksheetFS.28a¬ Ask the children what they see¬ How is this paper different than the others they saw?¬ Explain that this is a grid just like the other, but the squares have

numbers inside the squares¬ Each number stands for a particular pixel that they are going to

colour in¬ It is a coded picture and they are going to decode it to find a hidden

picture!

¬ Hold up a piece of blank white paper and a piece of graph paper¬ Ask them what the difference is between the two types of paper?¬ Point out that squared paper is just like the blank paper except it is

divided into little squares¬ Explain that when paper is divided this way, we call it a grid¬ The squares in this grid can be used to make a picture¬ Computers store pictures as numbers. They break the picture up in to

lots of small squares, called pixels – which stands for picture element¬ A number giving the colour of each pixel is then stored by the

computer¬ All the pictures we see on screens are made from lots of pixels

¬ Gather back and share examples of the children’s work¬ Compare the children’s work on the same image¬ Are they the same? If they are different, how? Why?¬ Ask the children if they are surprised that the picture theymade

came from coloring in numbers?¬ Did the children notice any patterns when they were working

which helped them with their colouring? (Eg. number patterns orsymmetry)

¬ Show the children the image in TeacherFS.28b¬ What do the children notice that is different about this picture

andthe images they have decoded?¬ Try to illicit that the grid is bigger, and has more squares¬ Explain that the more squares the grid has, the more detailed the

picture can be¬ Television screens, digital cameras and computer screens all use

rows of tiny pixels to make the picture detailed and sharp¬ The colours and pixels are stored as numbers

¬ The children could design their own $ISJTUNBTDIBSBDUFS by colouring pixels¬ They could then work with others to make up an adventure story about their DISBDUFS

¬ Challenge the children to write their initial or name using only pixels E.g.

Extension/Enrichment

¬ Hand out WorksheetFS.28a¬ The children act like computers and use the colour key to

colour in squares with a colour corresponding to the numberinside the square
