With the
holidays just
about behind
us, it’s time to
focus on what’s
really
important.
Don’t get me
wrong: I’m not
saying that Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur are unimportant
(despite my frequently expressing the wish to go away
on a 10 day cruise), but the holidays take our focus away
from the rest of the year. And it’s what we do with/
during the rest of our year that determines how hard we
will have to “work” on ourselves when the next new year
begins.
In shul, we are off to a running start just a week-and-a-
half after Simhat Torah with an Israeli Shabbat Dinner,
followed by a Musical Service at which we welcomed
our New Members on Friday, October 12 (and after
that we have 2 successive weeks of Bar Mitzvah
ceremonies!).
Beginning October 15, Dr. Eric Goldman r eturns to us
for three successive Mondays to discuss Iconic Jewish
Filmmakers.
On Friday, October 19, at 1:00 p.m., Cantor Zim begins
his class, Shir Chadash, on learning and leading the
Shabbat service.
Sisterhood Book Club resumes on Tuesday, October
23, discussing “Playing with Fire” by Tess Gerritsen.
And then I get into the act.
Schedule a one-on-one sessions with me on anything
Jewish that you want to learn or brush up on, from
learning how to read Hebrew to a sophisticated approach
toward what Judaism is all about. Call me! and we will
arrange a mutually convenient time.
The Great Synagogue Read-In begins on
Wednesday morning, October 24 at 10:00
a.m. with Chapter 1 of Letters to My
Palestinian Neighbor. We will also read and
ADULT ED PROGRAMS
discuss Chapter 1 on Thursday,
October 25 at 6:30 p.m. We will
read a chapter or two each month.
You can pick up your copy at the
Synagogue Office for the greatly
reduced price of $10.00 thanks to
the generosity of the CSI Scholar
Fund. Here’s what people are
saying about this book:
“A powerful, challenging, and deeply moving
plea across one of the most tragic divides in
modern politics.” Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks
“It conveys the urgency and poetry of the Israeli
story. These letters are for anyone interested in
understanding who the Jews are and why we
returned home.” Natan Sharansky
“Much, much better than the Kol Nidre
sermon… I promise!” Rabbi Ken Stern
On Wednesday, October 24th at 2:00 p.m. On the
Road with the Rabbi resumes. We will be hosted
by Rabbi Mark Golub at the
JBS Studios, r ight here in
Fort Lee. There is a $10.00 fee and space is rather
limited. Please email or call me to reserve your spot.
And just so you know, here is the On the Road line-up
for the next several months: on Saturday night,
November 10 we’re going to Joe’s Pub in
Manhattan to hear Jamie Obstbaum Leonhart (of
B’Rosh HaShanah and other High Holidays fame). In
December we’re going to Philadelphia for a tour of
the Rube Goldberg exhibit, and in January we’re
going to hear Mitchell Shedlarz (of Shofar fame)
playing the B-flat trumpet with his jazz band in Valley
Cottage, New York.
Also on Wednesdays, beginning October 24, I will be
teaching two more-formal classes modeled along the
lines of a Parent/Grandparent Education Program
(PEP/GPEP). It will be a combination of my
agenda for you, and whatever is on your mind. The
early session is from 5:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m., and the
later session is from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
And finally…Talmud and Tangents returns on
Thursday morning, October 25 at 10:30 a.m. it will
be a combination of the Talmud’s conversations and
tangents, and whatever germane or extraneous topics
come up in the course of our class. The new text (or
perhaps pretext) is Chapter 2 of Brachot (Blessings).
There’s a lot going on in our Shul in addition to our
prayer services, which will always remain the
mainstay. My hope is that you will avail yourself of
what we have to offer you-spiritually, intellectually
and socially.
NO HEAT? NO LIGHTS? REMEMBER,
WE ARE YOUR SECOND HOME!
If you should experience the loss of power--and the
shul has electric service--all our members are
welcome to come to the Synagogue to warm up,
recharge cell phones and laptop computers, sit and
relax, and have a cup of coffee or tea. On most
weekdays the Synagogue is open for you from
7:00am-10:00pm

SING A NEW SONG TO GOD
begin on Friday October 19th at 1:00pm, and will
meet weekly in the Chapel. This class will be on a
one month trial basis.
Please contact Barbara or Debbie,
in our office, and let us know if
you plan to attend. I hope to see
some of you there, so that we can
truly sing a “Shir Chadash,” a new
song—together. Come and help us
build new musical bridges for the
future.
Now that we have completed
welcoming the Jewish New Year
and the “Chagim,” my heart is
filled with warm
memories of our
joining together in
powerful song. Your
melodic participation on Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur with the
“Yom Tov Singers” truly enhanced the
spiritual level of our prayers.
“Shiru L’Adonai Shir
Chadash. Let us sing to God a
new song. Sing to all the earth
the very newness of our
expression praises God. Let us sing to
God as the earth reverberates with
chanting”.
-Psalms
These words were written for us thousands of years
ago by King David, while absorbed in the joy of his
divine relationship with God. His timeless words
remind us again and again, to sing to God.
What can we do to experience what King David
felt so long ago? The Chassidic Rabbis and masters
have said that the easiest way to do so is through
singing and chanting (sometimes even without
words). Chanting gives us the power to open
avenues of expression that capture our deepest
emotions. When a person gives oneself fully to
singing and chanting of holy words, one combines
heart and soul in worship that is truly sacred.
Even very old prayers and songs become like new,
when someone learns to lead services for the first
time. I am delighted to be teaching a new course on
new melodies for Friday night, and how to lead the
first part of our Shabbat morning service. We will
A NOTE OF THANKS FROM OUR CANTOR
One of the hallmarks of our synagogue has been
our warm participatory form of worship. Singing
has made our worshipping a more meaningful
service for everyone.
So many prayers from the Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur liturgy are solemn and soul-stirring.
They are recited and sung (chanted) with the
utmost reverence. To add beauty to our services, I
have always enjoyed training our own to sing
solos or sing-a-long with our congregation. All
your lovely voices helped enhance our High
Holiday services.

The school year begins with shopping trips for new
clothes, school supplies as well as healthy lunches
and snacks. As soon as a new routine begins, in
comes Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and all the
fall holidays. Between home and Hebrew School,
each year brings new levels of learning and
understanding regarding the beginning of the cycle of
the Jewish year. However, once we enter the month of
Cheshvan, all is changed.
Rabbi Benjamin Blech, a professor of Talmud at
Yeshiva University and a frequent contributor to
Aish.com, feels that the 12 months of the Hebrew
calendar can provide excellent insight to the road to
personal growth. Over the next several months, we
will cite some of his articles as we grow together.
The Hebrew calendar year begins with a month
containing a host of holidays. It is followed by a
month not marked by even a single festival. There is,
according to Rabbi Blech, a profound idea in this
sequence. Cheshvan is meant to remind us that our
lives are much more than the days marked by special
celebrations. The true test of our character is the way
in which we treat the “every day” moments of our
existence. Judaism does not have a Mother’s Day or a
Father’s Day. Honoring parents and showing them
proper gratitude should not be restricted to a one-day
occurrence. Anniversaries are nice occasions on
which to offer gifts of love to one’s significant other,
but far more meaningful is to give expression to the
preciousness of a relationship on a regular and
consistent basis.
In the Talmud, the rabbis ask which verse is the single
most important one in the entire Bible. The Rabbi
who offers the last in a series of opinions- if not the
most correct response, but maybe the most correct
one- says it is the one which requires of us to offer a
sacrifice every morning and a sacrifice every evening.
It is the verse which takes all the ideals of Torah and
elevates that which is mundane to a much higher
level. The consistency of our behavior from day to
day makes those things much more important.
Cheshvan teaches us that every day can and should be
lived as if it were a holiday.
