PREFACE

CRETE International Conference on Industrial and Hazardous Waste Management was established in 2008, in an effort to gather and spread existing and new developments on the broad field of industrial waste, with emphasis to potentially hazardous properties. Always under the organization of the Technical University of Crete (GR), the University of Padua (IT), the Hamburg University of Technology (DE) and the International Waste Working Group (IWWG), this conference managed to become a tradition, a steady biennial rendezvous of exceptional scientists and specialists from more than 50 different countries of the world. This year, celebrating the 10th Anniversary of CRETE International Conferences, the whole organization aimed at the conduction of a really special and extremely interesting event, with many novelties, offers and surprises. Tsinghua University (Beijing) joined in as an Organizing Institution, broadening CRETE 2018 boarders to the East. Russia also has a strong presence, with two special sessions and a round table discussion on industrial and hazardous waste management aspects from the Russian point of view and experience. E-waste mining has been selected as the highlighted theme of CRETE 2018, emphasizing the magnitude, the particularities, the value, as well as the challenges of this special waste stream which is going to worry mankind for many years in the future. Within this framework, a special exhibition on E-Waste Management has been created by the Technical University of Crete and many

interesting presentations have been scheduled, by experts who study this issue under a different prism, such as politics, science, technology, regulations, etc.. There is no doubt that during the past 10 years developments in the field of industrial and hazardous waste management have been rapid and drastic. New ideas have raised, effective solutions have been proposed, tested and applied, innovative trends and policies have been set, environmental damages have been noticed and several lesson have been learnt (or not). It is certain that co-operation, as well as exchange of knowledge and experiences in a global level, is the most promising prospect towards effective solutions. And this is exactly the prospect that CRETE International Conferences try to develop. With great pleasure and honor we welcome you once again in Chania, hoping that we will all gain unique and interesting experiences.

VENUE AND LOCATION

CRETE 2018 is hosted at MINOA PALACE RESORT, a luxury 5* beachside hotel, built within 35,000 sq. m. of maintained gardens. It is situated in the cosmopolitan area of Platanias, 12 km west of the picturesque town of Chania and only a 30 min. drive from the Chania International Airport.

State of the art facilities, the latest audiovisual equipment, comfort, high class decoration and cutting edge design are only few words to describe the unique, “Imperial Congress Hall” in Western Crete. Covering an area of 1,400 sq. m. & a maximum height of 5.50 m., in a rectangular shape, without columns, this venue has a capacity of over 1,500 delegates.

Health sector in the EU generates 10% of gross domestic product, 15% of public spending, 8% of the workforce and has high growth potential. Although, the first priority of health services is the provision of medical care, the implementation of waste minimization & recycling programs can save both environmental & economic resources. Case studies show-ing that the implementation of the circular economy model in a health unit is both profitable & environmentally friendly will be presented.

Main Lecturer: G. Bonifazi - Sapienza University of Rome, Italy The workshop outline will include: Part 1: hyperspectral imaging and chemiometrics fundamentals. Part 2: architectures logics, units and devices to utilize to systematically apply HI based techniques for hazardous waste characterization, monitoring and control during the different recycling/processing stages (i.e. materials fed to the plant, processing control and final recovered products quality assessment). Part 3: examples of some application, based on HSI, originally developed by the authors, and/or also taken from the literature, are presented, compared, critically analyzed and discussed, with reference to the different hardware configuration and logics utilized to perform the analysis, according to the characterization, inspection and quality control actions to apply on the different ACW products in the different stages of their manipulation, handling and processing. Plastic Hazards in the Oceans

Perhaps the most common and useful material since the beginning of the 20th century, plastics, has made modern life unthinkable without it. Mankind has developed a “disposable” lifestyle and estimates are that around 50% of plastic is used just once and thrown away. Because of their durability, low-recycling rates, poor waste management and maritime use, a significant portion of the plastics produced worldwide enters and persists in marine ecosystems, through a variety of pathways, including rivers. It has been estimated that between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes of plastics enter the ocean every year from coastal populations worldwide.

During the workshop, the real full dimensions of this global problem will be presented, its consequences will be explored, available solutions will be searched for, among which education and its dynamics.
