ICT KTN• The ICT KTN brings together the
former Digital Communications
and Digital Systems KTNs.
• It is being hosted by the not-for-profit
ICT KTN Company Ltd, working in
association with Intellect, NPL and
QinetiQ as delivery partners.
• The new KTN will focus on Knowledge Transfer as a stimulus to
economic growth.- It will seek bring a competitive advantage to the UK by facilitating the
development and take up of information and communications
technologies and their adoption as key enablers in other
industries.

Size of UK ICT Sector
• 272 of the top 1000 companies by R&D investment
in the BIS 2010 Scoreboard are ICT companies.
• The total R&D spend of these companies is £4.5 B,
equivalent to 3.2% of their total sales of £139 B.
• This makes ICT the third largest sector in the UK in terms of
sales and the second largest in terms of R&D.- The largest sector in terms of sales is Oil & Gas Production at £348 B.
- The second largest sector in terms of sales is Banking at £166 B.
- The largest sector in terms of R&D is Pharmaceuticals &
Biotechnology at £8.9 B.

ICT KTN Vision
• The focal point in the UK for innovation in digitally enabled ICT
systems. - Maximising the economic and social benefits
the UK realises through such systems.
- Accelerating the deployment of ICT by
identifying and addressing technological and
business issues that would otherwise delay
or even prevent its exploitation.
- Engaging with those in adjacent sectors for
which ICT is transformational.
- Encouraging increased inward investment in ICT.
- Supporting the growth of UK companies in the sector and the UK
activities of global companies.
• Respected by government as the independent business
voice of the ICT sector.

Governance
• The ICT KTN will be a challenge led organisation.- A Programme Steering
Board will establish top
level Challenges in the
light of those identified
by the Technology
Strategy Board.
• These Challenges will be
addressed through
Initiatives led by Delivery
Managers under direct
contract to the not-for-profit Company or engaged through
its delivery partners.

Impact
• The ICT KTN will achieve impact by
engaging with the community through:- High quality focused workshops, seminars,
briefings, master classes and other events,
both physical and online.
- The publication of position papers, roadmaps,
thought leadership articles and case studies.
• Physical events are central to all forms of knowledge transfer. - They also provide important opportunities for individuals to meet and network
with those in other organisations, both industrial and academic.
• Position papers and reports are key to informing governmental
organisations of the UK’s technological needs and policy
requirements.

Network of Networks
• The ICT KTN will operate
as a network of networks,
partnering with and
working through other
networks, industry
associations,
support organisations
and communities.

Working and Strategy Groups
• Working and Strategy Groups will
be central to the success of the
ICT KTN.- Such groups will be established
in support of major initiatives.
- They are the key to the writing and
publication of position papers and
reports.
- They are also an important source of guidance
in respect of KTN activity.

Collaboration
• The ICT KTN will encourage
collaboration as a route to
innovation. - It will promote the formation
of consortia to respond to UK
and European collaborative calls.
- It will introduce SMEs to the
capabilities of University Departments.

UK Business Interests
• The ICT KTN will actively promote the interests of UK companies.- This will be achieved by working closely with UK Trade & Investment
(UKTI).
- Competitions will be run for SMEs to exhibit a solution, service or product
at a major international show where UKTI has a presence.
- We will work with UK companies to put together demonstrators that
showcase UK technology.
