andaccountbasedpaymentinstrumentswereusedasamodel.Simultaneously,new
intermediariessuchasPayPalsucceededinfulfillingsomeofthenewneedsofonline
merchantsandconsumers(Dahlbergetal.2008).
1. Electroniccash:transactionsaresettledviatheexchangeofelectroniccurrency.
2. Prepaidcard:customersuseaprepaidcardforaspecifiedamountbymakingan
entryoftheuniquecardnumberonmerchantsites.Thevalueofthecardis
decreasedbytheamountpaidtothemerchant.
3. Creditcards:aserverauthenticatesconsumersandverifieswiththe bankwhether
adequatefundsareavailablepriortopurchase;chargesarepostedagainsta
customersaccount;andthecustomerisbilledlaterforthechargesandpaysthe
balanceoftheaccounttothebank.
4. Debitcards:acustomermaintainsapositivebalanceintheaccount,andmoneyisdeductedfromtheaccountwhenadebittransactionisperformed.
