from the whole IDA community.

Even though my time is drawing to an end as the president, I look forward to continuing to serve you and the industry as a whole on this amazing journey we are all on together.

Best of luck, and I will see you in 2020!

As always, reach out to me, the incoming President DJ Patterson, or the IDA Office if we can help in any way!

Closing out 2019I don’t think that words can express my gratitude to each and every one of you – our members, our Board of Directors, the IDA staff, and the industry as a whole – for the amazing year and wonderful experiences I have had as the 2019 IDA President.

I hope you all feel as excited as I do about all the accomplishments we have had this year! The old saying “it takes a village” is going through my head right now. And boy, it sure does! The IDA is a “members-helping-members” organization – a family, if you will. It is up to all of us to keep that spirit alive!

Even though we have connected a lot of the dots this year, there are still a lot more to connect and accomplish. As we roll into 2020, the future looks so bright. We have a great leadership team with great ideas ready to pick the ball up and run with it. I am super excited for them and look forward to the many more great advancements to come

VAT-number. This is a big step toward long-term viability and credibility to Norwegian professionals in the industry.

What does our Chapter have to look forward to in 2020 and beyond? A lot! We hope to set dates for at least two CD-SV events in 2020 and will hopefully be doing so with our new Norwegian RT, pending approval. We hope to host multiple member Meet & Greets throughout the country to bring members and non-members in the industry together. We are also striving to attend Norway’s largest car meet and event, the Oslo Motorshow. This would be a wonderful opportunity for exposure to 43,000 visitors, plus staff and exhibitors. This will aid us in our goal to increase Chapter membership and Certified Detailers.

Overall, the Norway Chapter is getting organized, gaining momentum, and planning big for the future!

Membership Continues to Grow

Turning Toward the Positive

Over the past year, the UK Chapter membership has grown at a steady rate. As well as membership growth, the UK Chapter’s Recognized Trainers (RTs) have completed over 25 CD and SV exams. We attended the Waxstock show (Europe’s biggest dedicated car detailing show) where we carried out CD exams and met with many potential new members. We have reenergized the UK Chapter Board with ambitious new board members and have also established and grown the UK Committees in preparation for 2020.

Looking ahead to 2020, we are excited to increase IDA recognition within the UK. We will once again be attending Waxstock in July where we will hopefully be able to not only meet members new and old, but also carry out another certification event. We are also excited to be organizing several IDA Meet & Greets around the UK and Ireland throughout 2020.

The Norway Chapter had a turning point in 2019. Under new Chapter President Faruk Prnjavorac, the Chapter has a brand new board with six members and has gained momentum throughout the year with an increase in both membership and certification interest.

A few highlights from the past year include a CD-SV certification event in Ski, Norway. Seven new CD-SV designations were earned. A second CD-SV event was held a few months later in Knarvik, Norway, where fourteen new CD-SV designations were earned. Additionally, volunteer translators worked long and hard to translate the written CD exams into Norwegian. This is a tremendous step toward a more inclusive and international certification program. Norway Chapter now has an application in for a Chapter member to become a Recognized Trainer (RT). This will allow the Chapter to host its own CD-SV events without recruiting an out-of-country RT to fly in to administer the tests.

The IDA Norway Chapter has also officially applied to be approved as a Norwegian organization with a Norwegian

planning a large detailing seminar to be organized by the chapter and to invite more than 300 local detailers with international speakers to educate. This mega event shall establish IDA’s presence in the country and the exhibit booth we hope to host shall be informative and motivate detailers to join the IDA and the India Chapter. We look forward to plenty of collaboration from IDA USA to organize this event and to support our Chapter’s development in 2020.

The New Zealand (NZ) Chapter of the IDA continued slow and steady growth in 2019. We are a relatively small country, but we have an active detailing community that is committed to professionalism and providing a quality service.

A particular highlight of our year was the 2019 NZ Detailers Conference organized by IDA NZ Chapter Board member Sam Gibbons. It was a roaring success attended by 22 representatives of NZ’s most prominent detailing companies as well as our special guest – the one and only Mr. Jason Rose, CD-SV, RT – who spent a day refining our polishing abilities. A mandate was set for NZ detailers to recognize the IDA as the association to work with to raise the standard of detailing in NZ and many of the detailers in attendance indicated a desire to proceed with CD and SV testing if they hadn’t already undertaken this.

New Zealand Detailing CommunityOur goals in 2020 are to continue to grow our local chapter membership and to increase the level of engagement amongst our detailing community with more get-togethers and active communication. We recognize that as we work together to build the profile of detailing across NZ and we promote ourselves as IDA Members, the recognition of the association will begin to come from the public, and this will further strengthen the profession enabling us to have stronger, sustainable, and more profitable businesses. It’s an exciting time to be a detailer in New Zealand!

2020 GoalsGreetings from India! Our Chapter was established in early 2019 and since then we have been organizing, growing, and increasing our online presence and visibility.

The India Chapter has an all-members group on WhatsApp, and members chat regularly to exchange detailing queries and ideas. The Facebook page for India Chapter is now also receiving more views, and we have been publishing member spotlights to welcome and highlight every member. Our India Chapter logo has been circulated among members and almost all are using it actively in their digital accounts and marketing materials.

We held an in-person Meet & Greet for South India members, conducted in Bangalore City. Nine members attended and discussed how to promote IDA in India and grow membership and community.

Plans for the India Chapter in 2020 include another all-India Meet & Greet, increasing our Facebook presence with regular newsletters and member spotlights, and

First-Ever France Detailing Event

IDA Chapter Feature Photos

We hope our efforts will encourage other detailers and suppliers to join and set up international IDA chapters in their own country. There are so many French speaking countries left for IDA to foothold through the Belgium/France Chapter, including Luxembourg, Switzerland, and several locations in North Africa.

Want an example of success thanks to IDA and its network? Five members of the IDA Belgium/France Chapter are now distributors of major brands or will become a detailing training center, and one of them has even doubled his income in just six months! The ROI for our IDA Chapter has been notable.

So many good things to come for the Belgium/France Chapter!

The France Chapter started very quickly in mid-2019 with the first IDA event in Paris, France, thanks to Jonathan Munsell, CD, and Alan Medcraf, CD-SV, RT, who rocked the certification event. There were 19 members who earned their CD-SV.

Thanks to Jason Rose, CD-SV, RT, and his advice, we are now bigger as Belgium has joined France Chapter to become stronger as one: the Belgium/France Chapter. The Chapter Board is now composed of 8 members, 4 French and 4 Belgians. It was important to have both countries equally represented.

What’s next? We will organize the first IDA event in Belgium in late January of 2020 with a CD-SV certification event, and we will represent the IDA at the first detailing tradeshow event in France on March 8, 2020: The Detailing Show. It will be the best way to meet detailers who don’t know about the Chapter, and a great opportunity to explain the advantages of becoming a member of the IDA to grow their business!

The Certification Committee had a very busy year in 2019 working towards a number of goals that have been on our radar for several years.

The highlight of the year for us was the completion of the specialty certification option, Marine. Certification for the Marine specialty consists of five (5) exams that can be taken online similar to the Phase I (CD) certification. We are excited for the MTE Orlando 2020 announcement and roll out of this project that has been a long time coming.

Other accomplishments from 2019 included the continuous review and improvement of the CD and SV exams and policies, the beginning stages of planning out the ‘Master Detailer’ designation, approving several new RTs and making improvements to the RT program over all, and improving certification participation globally.

Upcoming projects for members to look forward to include the activation of the online Marine Certification exams for member enrollment, as well as the establishment of another specialization certification: Motorcycle Certification. We will continue to plan and develop the ‘Master Detailer’ designation program. And as always, we will continuously review, update, and improve the existing CD and SV exams and programs to reflect best practices and the highest standards of the industry.

Thank you for taking the time to read and learn about the IDA Marketing and Communications Committee. For those who may not know, the “Marcomm” committee does exactly what the name implies – we handle all marketing materials and communications for the association. This includes things like social media, the website, and e-newsletters.

In 2019, you may have noticed some of the things we accomplished. We first set the goal to increase our following on social media. We did this by working on content for both Facebook and Instagram, boosting posts to get a greater reach and focusing on showing off some of our members in “member spotlight” posts. Our following on both platforms grew tremendously.

Also, we refined the IDA website, which was redesigned in 2018. Our committee worked together with other

committees to continue building a site that fulfills the needs of our Operator and Supplier members. If you have not visited the website in a while, be sure to check it out to see what’s new! Don’t forget to check out the IDA Merchandise Store, where members can order their own IDA gear, including clothing, caps, duffel bags, and more!

Lastly, thanks to member input in a recent survey, we put a lot of attention into IDA Consumer Awareness. We understand that it is just as important for the general public to know about the association (and the detailing industry) as it is for detailers. We have created a new section on the website specifically for customers to learn more about the ins and out of detailing, as well as why they should choose an IDA Certified Detailer over others. Additionally, they can conduct a quick and easy search to find members and Certified Detailers in their area.

As we move forward in to 2020, we will continue to grow and follow these same goals, along with finding new ways to highlight our members and supporters. We have gathered an awesome group of volunteer committee members that will continue to work behind the scenes in order to provide the best value we can to the association. If you’re interested in joining the team, feel free to reach out!

Joseph DiFiore, CD-SV Membership 2019 Committee ChairDiFiore’s Auto Detailing LLCThe Membership Committee had a big year in 2019 with

many goals set before us by the IDA Board. As always, the main focus of the Membership Committee is to improve the member experience and to expand member benefits and programs in a way that will help our members solve problems and provide value to them.

One highlight for MemComm this year was the long-awaited completion of a New Member Orientation video. We know that new members can sometimes be at a loss as to how to start utilizing their member benefits, how to get involved and engaged with the community, and where to go to find what they need. To help ease the transition and welcome new members aboard, we now have a 10-minute introductory guide to the IDA, member benefits, and website features. (If you want a refresher of your own, view the video here: https://the-ida.com/MemberWelcome.)

Additionally, MemComm worked hard toward the inclusion of dealerships and their detailers. The IDA has always striven to be respectful, welcoming, and inclusive of all sectors of the detailing industry. This includes the sometimes-overlooked auto dealership detailers. We’ve worked this year to increase awareness of the IDA in dealerships and to market to them all the benefits they can reap by getting their detailers access to IDA’s resources: networking with a community of professionals and vendors, access to educational articles and webinars, business and detailing tips and tricks, recognition and signage, consumer awareness, and more. We’ve designed and have in circulation a marketing piece geared toward dealerships and now include more information on the website for them.

Another large project MemComm has seen to fruition

is in your hands right now! This hard-copy mailer is for our members, to give you an inside look at what we’ve accomplished this year, what new benefits we offer that you may have missed, and what new programs and offerings you have to look forward to soon! We have many more projects in process and are always striving to increase the value of your membership, improve your experience as a member, and to be relevant and exciting to your detailing career!

So, what’s next for MemComm and for you as an IDA member?

Upcoming projects and goals include an all new ‘Fireside Chat’. This will be an open forum for SIGs (“Special interest Groups”). Each Fireside Chat will focus on a different hot topic or special interest subject area. They will be only 20-30 minutes long, so you can fit them in during your coffee break. We’ll have several expert moderators to help answer questions and guide the conversation, but members will be free to chime in with questions or with their own experiences and lessons learned. This Fireside Chat program will hopefully increase the interaction, engagement, and networking opportunities for members regardless of geographical location. Also soon to come: all new business resources and best practices for efficiency, legality, and profitability.

Stay tuned!

Alex Hazard, IDA Staff Committee Liaison

In 2019, the Tradeshow & Education Committee put together a strong showing at industry-related tradeshows, working to increase the visibility and recognition of the detailing profession and of IDA. We worked particularly hard to have a strong presence at the first-ever MTE Vegas show in August. We’d tell you how it went, but what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas – join us for MTE Vegas 2020 to find out for yourself! We also hosted 10 well-attended webinars on a range of topics from modern polishing and marine detailing, to determining your service pricing and marketing your business. We aimed for a good mix of business-specific topics and topics for detailing skills and knowledge.

Coming in to 2020, we’ve noticed our highest attended webinars this past year have been the business-related ones; we want to give our members what they want, so look for more business-related webinar topics to come in 2020. Have a topic you’re burning to know more about? Let us know; we happily take suggestions and feedback for future educational programs ([email protected]).

Through our Chapters, we’ve really started putting the International into IDA tradeshow/expo participation! This includes tradeshows and events in the UK, with France and Oslo soon to come. As usual, we’ll also have representation at MTE Orlando, The Car Wash Show, Southern Detailer’s Conference, MTE Vegas, and SEMA. Other tradeshow events will be added to the event calendar as they are planned so keep an eye on the-ida.com/events for activity near you.

• France/Belgium Chapter was created this year and has already had IDA Meet & Greet and certification events. 2019 President Jonathan Munsell, CD, visited France for the very first IDA event in Paris and to support the development of this new chapter.

• India Chapter joined the list of global chapters this year as well. They have launched a media campaign to grow membership and engagement with the India Chapter.

• Southeast Asia Chapter is the most recent chapter established in 2019. This Chapter now represents ten countries in Southeast Asia. In the near future, this could possibly grow to be the largest IDA Chapter in the world (outside the US).

In other news, we had two applications submitted in 2019 for a new IDA China Chapter from two separate groups. These applications are currently being reviewed by the IDA Board of Directors and on hold while IDA name, certification, and logo trademark applications are in consideration by the Chinese government.

We have a lot to look forward to in 2020. In 2018, IDA had 316 international members (outside the US); in 2019, that number grew to 457. In 2020 we hope to continue that global growth and live up to our ‘International’ name. In the new year we plan to provide more structure and support to chapters, increase the allocation of membership funds to the chapters, implement and strengthen the chapter mentorship program including quarterly meetings between the IDA office and chapter leadership, and create a roadmap to success for new chapters.

The Chapter Development Committee made headway in supporting and growing current chapters as well as recruiting and assisting in the start-up of three new chapters this year.

A few 2019 updates and highlights from current Chapters:

• Norway Chapter transitioned leadership with additional new board members. We’ve also assigned a new Chapter Board Liaison/Mentor: Alan Medcraf, CD-SV, RT. Norway has had several IDA events, including IDA Meet & Greets and certification events. They are working towards getting a local RT to boost certification program offerings. IDA 2019 President Jonathan Munsell, CD, visited Norway for a certification event and to show IDA support.

• New Zealand Chapter has expanded with new board and committee members. It is a very small market, but full of passionate detailers that seek industry standards and strong networking. The Chapter Development Committee Chair visited to attend a detailer conference including IDA Membership meeting.

• United Kingdom Chapter has grown to be the largest IDA Chapter outside the United States. The UK Chapter also went through leadership transition this year, with an expanded Board of Directors and new Committee leaders. Some of the most known and active professional detailers in the UK are now on the UK Chapter Board. IDA attended WaxStock with 2019 President Jonathan Munsell, CD, visiting to represent IDA and support the Chapter. Certification programs were offered at WaxStock by Alan Medcraf, a local IDA Recognized Trainer.
