From Talking to Writing: Word & Sentence Level Strategies for Supporting Writing and ComprehensionDr. Charles W. Haynes : Are you a learning specialist, educator, or parent looking for tools to assist students who struggle with oral or written expression? Or, do you teach English Language Learners (ELLs) who have difficulty acquiring English vocabulary or sentence patterns? This interactive, hands-on presentation will first provide evidence-based techniques for helping students to solidify their vocabulary knowledge, aid their word choice and master sentence structure. Then Dr. Haynes will share research-tested “micro-discourse”, narrative, and expository writing strategies.

After the session, participants will be able to:1. Describe oral and written methods for supporting content vocabulary learning at word, sentence, and discourse levels,2. Outline multi-modal strategies for teaching sentence patterns, and3. Describe “Cohesion Circle” and “Detail Circle” strategies for aiding flow and elaboration in struggling writers’ narrative and expository texts

The Memory Connection: Multisensory Strategies for Boosting Students’ Working Memory Throughout Phonics Instruction; Jennifer Hasser, M.Ed. : Reading and comprehending text employs working memory, the brain’s system for storing and managing information. In this workshop, we discuss the research linking dyslexia and working memory deficits and present proven strategies to improve working memory simultaneously with all levels of phonics instruction. Participants learn engaging multisensory activities to use with students of any age to boost working memory and pave the way to fluent reading. We demonstrate methods of scaffolding instruction so that teachers and students feel successful. Techniques support OG/MSL teaching.

10 Pearls of Executive Function in the Classroom and Beyond; Matthew Fisher, Associate Director of Admissions, The Gow School : Executive function impacts our students both in the classroom and in daily life. This session will explore ten techniques to help improve executive function skills, including organization, timemanagement, and study tips.

Dysgraphia is More than Messy Handwriting; Brenda Taylor, Ph.D., LDT, CALT, Educational Diagnostician : Although dysgraphia has always been identified as a ‘related disorder’ in the Texas Education Code, it is still fairly recent in its recognition as a learning difficulty. This session will address various aspects of dysgraphia to include – definition, related terminology, informal measures for determining a student at-risk, how it relates to dyslexia, and considerations for both assessment and services.

WHAT IS DYSLEXIA?“Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction.

Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and back-ground knowledge.”
