Dear students,Welcome to the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya

We stand on the verge of the third decade since the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya was founded. Since its inception, without any public funding, IDC has become a pioneer in many fields, revolutionizing higher education and creating a different academic sphere, whose traces can now be seen in other academic institutions.

IDC Herzliya’s success was made possible due to its commitment to train the future leaders and the distinctive worldview that was adopted from the start. This worldview is based on an interdisciplinary approach, academic innovation, an orientation to the international horizon, combining academic studies at the highest level with practical wisdom and most of all, partnership with our students.

This partnership has given rise to dozens of student initiatives that have become integral parts of IDC Herzliya: the IDC Entrepreneurship Club, the debate club, the sports teams, volunteer programs, the law clinics, the Keren Or program, the performing arts troupes, IDC Radio and much more.

From the very first day, the question of how the University of the Future should look has guided our actions at IDC Herzliya. Over the years, we have paved new academic paths that have endowed our alumni with optimal preparation to move forward, to dare, to initiate and to change, opening infinite possibilities to them.

We continue to invest thought and effort in building tomorrow’s academy today: an academy that will prepare you for a constantly changing world; an academy that advocates the realization of personal liberty and aspirations, while simultaneously educating towards social responsibility.

As the following pages demonstrate, along with the academic activities of IDC Herzliya’s outstanding schools, there are a wealth of programs at your disposal that aim to enhance enrichment, pleasure and voluntary contributions to society.

I Wish you a successful academic year. Yours,

Prof. Uriel Reichman Founder and President

Welcome

As a result, a distinctive project, Guiding Student, was developed to invite applicants who have been accepted to join the IDC Herzliya family, from the earliest stages of the registration process. They are contacted by students from various programs who have volunteered to accompany them from the moment they are admitted to IDC Herzliya until they begin their studies. The Guiding Student completes a professional training program focusing on communications, marketing and other general topics relevant to IDC Herzliya.

The club emphasizes the study of practical knowledge in the framework of an annual program of study. In addition, there will be several lectures given by senior people in the capital market, open to all IDC students. For additional information: [email protected]

Social InvolvementOne of the main goals of the Student Union at IDC Herzliya, and main areas of activity, is social involvement. In recent years this activity is divided into two: national and local. On the national level, the Student Union established an ‘operations room’ during the recent Operation ‘Protective Edge’. This was the largest civil center for hasbara (public relations), representing Israel outwardly and helping in the efforts to improve international public opinion. The ‘operations rooms’ worked in full cooperation with the National Center for Hasbara in Jerusalem, and in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Prime Minister’s Office. Other national efforts include participation in the battles against the high cost of living, equality in the burden and national social activity for the benefit of the Holocaust survivors. On the local level, the Student Union is active in the city of Herzliya and its vicinity, assisting and contributing to society and the community by initiating, organizing and assisting varied volunteer activities with various organizations in the city. In addition, the Student Union spearheads green activity on campus - encouraging recycling - and promotes the quality of the environment.

External Relations and Ties with the International School

The Student Union organizes a number of delegations abroad, such as the March of the Living to Poland, delegations to the European Union, and more. The Student Union works to strengthen ties between international students studying at the Raphael Recanati International School and Israeli students. Since studying in a foreign country may be at times overwhelming, the RRIS Committee was established in order to assist the international students in all aspects of students life. The committee has three positions aimed at tackling the academic, welfare and integration challenges that transpire on a daily basis. The RRIS committee is part of the student Union and its goal is to reach out to all of the international students and help them in anyway possible.

Developing algorithms for deep packet inspection is a critical task in most network components and security measures, such as firewalls, IDS, load balancers, etc.Today, network operators are required to inspect network traffic to achieve quality of service and deal with security threats. At the center we develop algorithms that deal with the current needs of the network. This work is conducted jointly with undergraduate, graduate, Ph.D. and post-doctoral students. The Center’s directors are Prof. Anat Bremler-Barr, from the Efi Arazi School of Computer Science, and Prof. David Hay, from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. For additional information: www.deepness-lab.org

The International Institute for Counter-Terrorism (ICT) ICT is working to develop innovative public policy on global terror through applied research on the phenomenon of terror and methods of coping with terror. ICT aims to research the psychological aspects of counter-terrorism and to formulate recommendations which will on one hand reduce the efficacy of the strategy of terror and on the other hand improve the public’s ability to endure this phenomenon. ICT’s uniqueness is expressed, among other ways, in the research methodology it has adopted: special think-tanks composed of people from different disciplines and from both the academic and security world. Since its establishment, ICT’s activities have focused on several areas: academic-applied research; conferences and seminars; consulting services for decision makers; public diplomacy and educational activities; discussion and brainstorming forums and building and maintaining databases.

Research Program in Political Psychology Political psychology is a dynamic field of research that combines theories and approaches from the discipline of psychology with those from political science, while drawing inspiration from the many diverse fields of research in the social sciences. The research in this area deals with different political phenomena using theoretical tools - some of which were developed outside of political science - and is dedicated to identifying psychological processes that exist at the foundation of opinions and behavior of both citizens and leaders in the political arena.

The field of decision making strives to understand and improve decision making by means of an in-depth analysis of the processes involved, including: identifying a set of alternatives; identifying the dimensions that may influence a decision; insisting on a process of prioritizing these dimensions; insisting on ranking the priorities for the expected implications from each of the alternatives and creating a decision matrix. Various research based on the method developed in the program has been published in recent years in some of the world’s leading journals.

The Advanced Reality Lab Today, at the beginning of the 21st century, we spend greater and greater parts of our day in digital mediation. Where is this leading us? What will the human-computer-internet interfaces look like in 5, 20 or 20 years from today? Is the increasing merging between us and our digital devices desirable and risk-free? Does it provide us with an opportunity to correct fundamental social problems or does it pose a risk for the future of humanity? The Advanced Reality Lab deals in a variety of interdisciplinary projects, that attempt to understand virtuality from technological, scientific, social and cultural points of view. In the lab we create futuristic user interfaces, and in particular brain-computer interfaces that enable direct control of the computer using the power of thought alone, research human behavior and the human brain in a virtual reality environment, and attempt to understand the relationship between our real and virtual lives. Students who volunteer in the lab will experience and create virtual realities in a lab that is one of a kind in Israel. For additional information: www.avl.idc.ac.il
