Sopwith Scout .—The Bopwirih Scout is a fast one-seater mach ine. The wing tips and tawedge sha ped . I t has stagger, dihed ral, and closed fuselage.

Sopwith Triplane.—The Sopwith Triplane has throe planes, and the w ing tips are cut as ithe Scout, except th at the corners are very slightly rounded . The tail rudder are similar to hosetof the Sopwortli Scout.

The Sopworth Camel is a small single-seater machine. It has stagger, bu t no overhan g.uppe r plane is stra ight; but th e lower has a ma rked dihedral,, the tips of both being cut back. Theis of type X, a nd the rud der is similar to tha t of the Sopworth Scout.

BRITISH.

S. P. A. D.—The S. P. A. D. is a tractor biplane with closed fuselage and is perhaps

the most difficult of all allied planes to distinguish.The wings are squ are c ut; there are two pairs of s tru ts on either side of the nacelle,

which appe ar to be of equal leng th, bu t in reality there is a slight overhang .The tail (see sketch) is the safest guide to the identity of this machine.The S. P. A. D. is liable to be mistaken for a hostile plane by unskilled

observers, and the grea test care mu st therefore be exercised in establishing itsident i ty .

Halberstadter.— T h e HaTberstadter is a difficult machine to identify unless seen sideways,and then its high, triangular rudder is extremely promin ent. Some unc ertainty exists as to theexac t stru ctu re, but mo st observers agree as to the slight dihedral and stag ger, while the tailis certainly of ty pe Y (par. 12), this hav ing been a common cause of confusion when themach ine first app eared . As soon, however, as the rudd er can be seen, no further dou bt ispossible.
