A NETWORKED SELF IDENTITY :: SOCIALITY :: CULTURE :: PLATFORMS :: POLITICS :: SOCIAL MEDIA Advanced Topics/COMM 594 Zizi Papacharissi, PhD Professor and Head, Communication Office BSB 1140A Office hours Mon – Wed 12-2pm and by appointment Office phone 312.996.3188 E-mail [email protected] Course description We have always been social and we will always be social. Sociality is the modus operandi and a means to self- actualization for human beings. This course will examine how newer media, frequently referred to as social, recalibrate our paths to being social. The social here is defined quite broadly, and is inclusive of and not separate from other practices, processes and habits that include the political, cultural, economic, and personal sphere. The course is structured around the term networked self, which captures how contemporary individuals self-actualize within a world where technologies of expression and connection are omnipresent, ubiquitous, and embedded in the everyday. We begin by examining the self in modernity and late modernity, then consider identity and sociality practices in late modernity and as enabled through emerging technologies. As sociality and identity are performed in a variety of spheres, we then further examine the cultural, political, and economic ramifications of the technosocial environments we inhabit. We read from a variety of sources, including books, articles and the popular press, and whenever possible we invite the authors to discuss the texts with us in class via Skype.
