Bring Your GiftsANNUAL REPORT 2015

IDENTITY STATEMENT

We are people with and without intellectual disabilities, sharing life in communities belonging to an International Federation. Mutual relationships and trust in God are at the heart of our journey together. We celebrate the unique value of every person and recognize our need of one another.

OUR MISSION IS TO...

Make known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities, revealed through mutually transforming relationships. Foster an environment in community that responds to the changing needs of our members, while being faithful to the core values of our founding story. Engage in our diverse cultures, working together toward a more human society.

L’ARCHE GREATER WASHINGTON, D.C. PO Box 21471 | Washington, DC 20009 | 202.232.4539 | [email protected]

dear friends,Bring Your Gifts is a central theme for L’Arche Greater Washington DC. It’s a welcome for everyone with or without intellectual disabilities to share and celebrate their own unique gifts.

L’Arche is a spiritual community where our faith is at the center of all we do. What-ever gifts we possess, we’ve been given them by God for God’s glory, and when we have done that, we are able to treat each other, no matter who we are and what our gifts may be, with honor and respect.

Our volunteers bring their talents for cooking, joining in on games and prayers, listening and participating in community life. Volunteers too realize their own special gifts when engaged with community members.

Donors give generously of their time, talents and treasure so that we can do the work we do: Build strong and caring communities.

Our community assistants give the care, respect and love our core community members deserve.

Our core members through their own gifts are the heart of L’Arche-GWDC. By sharing life with them we realize that accepting each other’s gifts is when we fully become human.

We invite and humbly request that you to bring your gifts to L’Arche. And join us at our table.

Thank you, friends, for sharing your gifts.

We welcome Francis Damien Smith to Highland Street home

and say good-by to Linda Garcia, a loving family member of Highland Street home.

Fr. Thomas P. Gaunt, SJ, Board President

Over the past year, we have celebrated bir thdays, anniversaries, holidays and farewells. We also welcomed new assistants, and national and international visitors.

• In May L’Arche USA celebrated L’Arche’s 50th Anniversary and reflected on our participation in the world-wide community. L’Arche-GWDC welcomed over three-hundred guests.

• L’Arche-GWDC hosted a book signing for Tim Shriver’s book, Fully Alive at the French Embassy.

• Fritz Schloss received an award for twenty-five years of service to Arlington County ensuring that all county vehicles are sparkling clean!

• In September, the United States Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program invited people from eight different countries to meet at L’Arche-GWDC Highland House to discuss the intersection of faith and service.

• Muslim scholars from Morocco their shared experiences for a Georgetown University sponsored Muslim-Christian dialogue at Euclid and Ontario Homes.

A community is made up of different members belonging to one another. Our communities could not be possible without the special care, love and dedication of our assistants. They too come to us with their strengths and weaknesses. Yet they are called to serve, to provide personal care, to administer medications and to prepare meals that meet many different diets and requirements.

They schedule doctor appointments and provide transportation to and from the appointments. They help with finances, manage budgets, and take care of sundry household duties. They accomplish all of this with tenderness and care.

This is not a job to our assistants, it’s what one does for family.

L’Arche advocates with people who have intellectual disabilities for the rights and dignity they deserve.

• In January, L’Arche advocates Charles Clark, Eva-Elizabeth Chisholm, and Yuko Gruber joined a contingent from the Arc of Northern Virginia to visit representatives in Richmond to ask for their support. Specifically, the group was asking for additional Medicaid Waiver “slots” — and the funding to go with them—to help move people off wait lists.

• In June, a group from L’Arche Greater Washington DC and others from around the country visited Capitol Hill to meet with Senators and Congress people and their staff.

• We were invited to join members of Special Olympics and other organizations and advocacy groups at the White House reception in July marking the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

At L’Arche Greater Washington, D.C., community life centers on four homes where sixteen core people—members with intellectual disabilities—live together with the people who assist them. In addition to these life-long homes, L’Arche provides professional-support services and seeks ways for core people to actively engage in the social, civic, and spiritual life of Greater Washington, D.C.

Thank you to the many generous donors whose financial gifts supplement government contracts, making a holistic, high-quality life possible for L’Arche members.
