This is an experience for installation of IDES server for ECC6 EHP4. This is also done on SuSE Linux 10SP3. At the

time of writing this document, I have also planned to install the same on virtual machine but am not really sure about

how to proceeed. Should I proceed with VMWare or proceed with XEN the virtual machine app;lication comes

bundled with SuSE linux.

But before all I do need to look into the prerequisites of the installation, that is the media, the machine and the

installation guide. The media list is as under…..

Before starting the installation we need to go thru the minimum prerequisite checks.

Main things are the necessary C Libraries, Java, and the Java policy certificates. Lets check that step by step as

below….

Command Set 1:

hssamums017:/ # rpm -q jpackage-utils

This shows that the jpackage utils are installed. We also do need to check up whether the the java jdk is installed or

not.

Command Set 2:

Just for a simple check you start SAPINST from the installation master. For this change your directory to the directory

where U already have copied the installation master(for my case it was /sapcd/D51037622 then you go to the

respective OS-Hardware directory. As I was doing the on and IBM blade server HS21 (as usual as my previous

cases) it is a XEON processor 64 bit environment. Hence I choose the directory IM_LINUX_X86_64 and hence the

full path of the directory is /sapcd/D51037622/IM_LINUX_X86_64. Here I have executed SAPINST. Please see

command below for the same.

Command Set 2:

As soon as I executed the command with a little surprise a cute little splash screen appeared which i didn’t see before

or might have not noticed properly, like ECC 6 installation or BW installation.




This is the normal initial startup screen; from there I selected the tree EHP4 for ERP6.0 and it was another surprise. It

seems the ABAP + JAVA installation mode is not there. On start only it is taking you into entirely different path for

ABAP and JAVA. Look at the screen below for reference.

Although I was planning to do ABAP and JAVA separate instance with same SID this time from my learning in the

BW project, but frankly speaking I never thought this type of surprise.





Lets’ see how any surprises more. As you see above I have selected the path Enhancement Package 4 for SAP ERP

6 à SAP Application Server ABAP àOracleà Central System à Central System for installing the central instance and

clicked next.

Following screen appeared and I choose default installation only and went a step ahead.





It landed up in the next screen where I had to specify the SID of the system and mount directory of SAP and also

understand UNICODE is not the RECOMMENDED but the only choice. May be there is a possibility for changing the

option if I had clicked the Custom button typically in the previous screen as that gives you more flexibility of choosing

installation parameter. No I also checked this option but this option too is not allowing me to do so. So one thing is

very clear – UNICODE is not the RECOMMENDED but the only choice. As there is no other option I decided to

click on the next button after specifying the SID and did actually no change in the SAP system mount directory and

kept it as “/sapmnt”.





In the next screen it asked to choose a master password for all the relevant accounts. Provide and confirm your

password here and then press next button. This password will be the password for the following ….

1. OS accounts – <sid>adm (SAP administrator for OS) and ora<sid> (Oracle Admin user).

2. SAP accounts- DDIC, SAP and SAPCPIC for 000, 068 and 800(Default client for IDES) client.

3. All database accounts like database admin and SAP schema owners.





****** Do not toy and try with your memory. PLEASE WRITE the PASSWORD in your note book till you

prepare the handover documentation to the operation team. If you forget the things at least during and till

first login you will be in big problem..Once you are done click next….





This will finally ask you to provide your database SID. One thing is very clear although SAP gives you the option to

write your own SID, but I never kept the SID of database and system different. I will better admit I never tried it before

but very soon I will be trying and writing the result……So I kept my database SID and system SID same and went

forward by pressing next button.

It then actually runs the prerequisite checker and find out if something more is required or not…..or you missing

something. You can also run prerequisite checker before hand and do the necessary rectification. This will help you

hiccup free installation. Finally in the next screen it starts asking you the media for installations….

First is the “Installation Export 1 ECC 6.0 EHP4” as shown below.





Remember you can not type but only browse and select. Next comes the “Installation Export 4 ECC 6.0 EHP4″





Then comes the “Installation Export 2 ECC 6.0 EHP4″ and “Installation Export 3 ECC 6.0 EHP4″





Then it asks for the media of Oracle RDBMS.





Then it asks for UC Kernel NW 7.01 and oracle client as shown below.





After this it shows you the parameter summary screens. I have taken the entire parameter screen and it was possible

by dividing and taking the same…So you will find three four screens which all together will be showing the entire

parameter screen.





Once we are finish identifying the locations of DVD the screen comes in software delivery manager is actually shows

the process of installation. but one thing happens here is it does the prerequisite check behind and if everything is

OK, it comes to the screen which asks the Solution Manager Key for the system. the screen shows is as follows….

One big surprise here is, during installation it never asked me to locate the jce policy….I dont know why……

Now comes the screen which shows you the different phases of installations and the progresses. As I was installing

IDES, I kew it is going to a long time. Hence actually I was running this installation using remote console of the server

so that I can be happy going home even if takes a long time.

Surprising fact is that here I see there are only 28 steps instead of 42 steps I saw earlier. Let see what else are kept

in the sleeves of the installer of this version of SAP. Here are some screens for the same.



Till it reaches on 8th step, where it asks you to install the database server. Once this step arises, you need to open a

different xterm session using the login id as ora<sid> and the password you used as master password. Complete the

installation and come back to this screen as it is as the screen shows below.





I have not kept any of the detail screens here as because the screens are no different than the others, As this is a

new product of SAP not from Oracle. The same 10.2.0.1 database will be installed. You don’t need to do anything

except pressing the next button…..At the end the old method of execution of orainstRoot.sh and root.sh script

with root privilege will always be there as the following screen shows. Don’t forget to do this before you

press OK button here, otherwise it will invoke lot of trouble which may even led you to reinstall…..





Once that is finished, come back to the SAP installer screen and press OK.Now continue the installation, as shown in

the earlier screen. It will go on creating database and tablespaces. Remember for installation of IDES you need to

have at least 400 GB hard disk space to go on…

….

One major surprise here comparing to the installation of ECC6 only or NW 7.00 is the database installed there at

initial stage is 10.2.0.1, which I used to patch afterwards with 10.2.0.1. But here when you install ECC6 EHP4 the

database installed is of version 10.2.0.1 and it does not let you continue installation unless you have updated to

10.2.0.4. For the same in the product bundle they supply the ORACLE 10.2.0.4 patch set DVD…

It is stuck in the steps of patch installation. In previous installation experiences of ECC6 or NW7 I didn’t see such

obstacle during installation. Although sometime I use to install the patch immediately after the database software

installation. This helped me reducing the installation time by one hour at least….Because I never had to run the

update scripts like “catupgrd.sql” and so on.

My suggestion is if SAP is introducing this concept in their installer they keep it before “create database”. Secondly it

will always help you to bypass backing up of existing database (about 350 GB size) having almost no business data

as exports not went inside till this point which is a waste of time, media and manpower… thus money.. considerably.

For oracle patch installation create a directory which is not your ORACLE_HOME directory or under it. Extract the

patch zip file using unzip command. It will unzip the whole thing inside a directory “Disk1”. Now login as a oracle user

and then do “./runinnst”.

Before doing the same don’t forget to stop isqlplus, listener and database. I am writing this experience for a single

standalone database, but those who are doing with Oracle RAC, should be more catious and I will suggest every one

to read thoroughly the readme.html file which is always available in the root (not system root directory but where you

have extracted the patch…In my case it is “/sapcd/orapatch10.2.0.4/”.

As soon as you run installer it gives you the following screen.





Just press next button here. This will led you to the next screen of prerequisite checks as follows. Here I got some

error infact not error but check not done kind of thing. I simply ignored and went ahead…Since it was not error but the

installer itself has some issue…I suppose it is not allowing to install in the same home…But it also said no error.





Then finally once again the root.sh script need to be re-executed as root. Finally the post upgrade things which is

done by following steps…

Startup listener.

Startup database in upgrade mode.

Spool and run pre-upgrade information tool – utlu102i.sql

Spool & Run catupgrd.sql until all the errors are corrected.

Shutdown database and startup in normal mode.

Spool and Run utlrp.sql script to recompile all invalid PL/SQL packages.

check the status of all the components after the upgrade from table DBA_Registry.

After the whole thing is over, I went back to root and restarted sap installer and choose “to continue with old options”.

This time it says oracle patch is fine….like below…





Now come back to the SAP installer screen and click on retry button, the will start and now the lengthies part will start

i.e. the insertion of the data in the database ..ie. importing of the IDES export. In my case it took 4 hours, in your case

timing will be according to the speed of the server and the storage subsystem.





And finally the installation is over. No more writing is possible for me now. Hope by tomorrow I will come with with aseparate page on the surprises and the wish list, and another page on the post installation thing…
