Dear IDS Community, A year ago I had the pleasure of attending my first IDS auction. Fresh off a plane from my home in tropical Panama, I headed to the gala, excited and nervous. I remember sipping a yummy drink, as I mingled with parents in the hallways. Soon, I thought, this sweet little school would be my new home, and these parents, my community. A whirlwind year later, my son Max and I are now at home in Connecticut and at IDS. We’ve survived a six-snow day winter, made friends, and learned about everything that makes IDS tick – from Dancing with the Stars at Fall Games to the weekly swaying together as we sing the all-school song. We have come to know and love this gem of a school. I’m excited to celebrate the end of this year with all of you “By the Sea.” I know we will enjoy amazing farm-to-table food, laugh and applaud as folks run up bids on coveted parking spots, and celebrate the warmth and friendship that we enjoy at IDS. And in the end, we will have strengthened our bonds and raised money to support the IDS mission. As we anticipate this amazing evening, my thoughts are especially of the fabulous four, who make it happen: Jen and Tim Mahr and Anne and Brian Gouin, as well as their team of volunteers. They make this beautiful evening look effortless, despite the amazing number of hours they spend coordinating, soliciting, and decorating. I am grateful for their leadership and for the chance that gives us all to celebrate IDS. With great appreciation, Jessi Christiansen Head of School

Dear IDS Friends, It was a long and snowy winter. As month after month went by with snow still coating every surface, a glimmer of warmth beckoned. I knew that spring would come eventually – and with it, the promise of a wonderful night to celebrate at the auction. “By the Sea” promises to be a wonderful celebration of all that is good about IDS. We will enjoy tender steaks and tasty seafood prepared by Max Catering Group. We will chat with old friends and make new connections. And we will bid for treasures big (a signed portrait of the 2014 Championship UCONN Huskies!) and small (coveted photo books showing how much these sweet kids have grown and changed). The Board of Trustees is responsible for the financial viability and the strength of the programs at IDS. The auction makes a real financial contribution to our school. What you buy today makes great programs possible tomorrow. It is that simple. On behalf of our whole board, I want to thank all of the volunteers who make this amazing event possible. 2014 Annual Spring Auction

FEARLESSLEARNINGrequiresFEARLESSBIDDING! Welcome to Fearless Bidding! Fear is the enemy of an amazing evening out, so the auction committee has worked hard to empower you to be courageous, confident, and curious about the many wonderful items listed in this catalog! By the Sea will be different in many ways from previous auctions: the setting and menu are more upscale and designed to emphasize community while the expanded live auction will be faster paced than in the past. In the end, the goal is two-fold: we want you to enjoy the fun and excitement that comes with a special evening of great food and an entertaining auction. We also hope to raise $100,000 to close the tuition gap and financially support IDS’s challenging curriculum and supportive learning environment. Both endeavors depend entirely on your support, so get your paddles ready (yes, real paddles) and bid away! Please read the rules and procedures below - there are important changes from past auctions.

SILENTAUCTIONRules&Procedures

• Upon arrival to the Auction, you will check in and receive your bidding paddle and bidding

number. Use only the bidding number assigned to you.

• Each Silent Auction item has an associated bid sheet, with an item number that matches the bid sheet number. If you wish to place a bid, write your bid number in the next available space with the dollar value you wish to bid.

• The Silent Auction bidding begins at 5:30 PM and will close definitively at 7:00 PM.

• The last bid on the sheet will constitute the winning bid. All Sales Are Final. There will be no

refunds or exchanges except where specified by the donor on the item description.

• In the event of a dispute, an Auction official will act as the final authority and determine the winning bid.

• Bidders will be notified during the evening if they have a successful Silent Auction bid so they

can pay the cashier at the end of the evening.

• Unless otherwise specified, all services purchased at the Auction must be used within one year of the Auction date. Read the item description carefully to understand fully any limits or restrictions that may apply.

• Winners are bound by the price restrictions specified by the donors.

• The terms of the item descriptions are not negotiable.

LIVEAUCTION Rules&Procedures

• Upon arrival to the Auction, you will check in and receive your bidding paddle and bidding

number. Use only the bidding number assigned to you.

• Auction item values are the donors’ estimates and are not warranted by the Independent Day School for tax purposes or for general value.

• The Live Auction will begin at approximately 8:30 PM. Dessert will be served during the live

auction.

• Each bid obligates the bidder to pay said price in full when the Auctioneer announces the winning bidding number. All Sales Are Final. There will be no refunds or exchanges except where specified by the donor on the item description.

• After the Live Auction is over and all winning bids are entered into the computer system, the

cashier’s table will open for checkout. Payment may be made by CASH, CHECK, VISA, or MASTERCARD. Payment in full on the evening of the Auction is mandatory, except where other arrangements have been made.

• After settling your account with the cashier, you may go to the designated pick up areas to pick

up your items with staff assistance. An item CANNOT be picked up without proof of payment and staff assistance.

• Unless otherwise specified, all services purchased at the Auction must be used within one year of
