IEEE Region 10 Annual General Meeting, 22 Aug 2014
A total of 120 delegates from 48 sections convened at Elicium 2 at RAI Convention Center, Amsterdam. Amsterdam
is considered an alpha world city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) study group. The city is also the
cultural capital of the Netherlands. An introduction to Amsterdam since 1600 by Radboud Molijin eased the
backdrop of R10 AGM. Two addresses by WIE Chair, Nita Patel and YP Chair, Timothy Wong led the meeting with
updates and happenings at their respective affinity groups. Briefing on National Society Agreements was given by
Joseph V. Lillie followed by two presentations: R10 History Coordinator, Isao Shirakawa, and R10 Young
Professionals Coordinator, Ko Kikuta. R10 Director Toshio Fukuda delivered his welcome address through
telepresence.

Additionally, the result of a social media campaign ‘I join IEEE’
was announced by Gowtham Prasad. The Innovation Category
Award went to Asma Sajid of Lahore Section while the Popular
Category Award went to Chelliah Ramachadran of Madras
Section.
Nancy Ostin presented IEEE-ETA KAPPA NU to capture the
interests of student members with added prestige and visibility .
T. S. Rangarajan informed the delegates that Technology
Management Council (TMC) will become Technology and
Engineering Management Society (TEMS) with membership
starting 2 September 2014. The TEMS mission is to “advance,
enhance, and improve essential management knowledge and
skills of IEEE members”. This society is relevant as more
technology professionals are called to function as executives
besides focusing on technology.
Reports on TENSYMP 2014 and R10-HTC 2014 were also
presented. Addresses by President-Elect Candidates 2015
comprising Tariq Durrani, Frederick Mintzer, and Barry Shoop,
with Q & A raised interesting questions on their aspirations for
members and career development as well as increasing IEEE
value for members, professionals and the public. The AGM
adjourned at 12.15 pm. R10 Delegates in Amsterdam

A count of 1063 IEEE attendees comprising staff, primary delegates from 296 sections,
secondary delegates from 127 sections, exhibitors, and sponsors convened at IEEE Sections
Congress 2014 (SC2014). Attendees could use the SC2014 mobile application or Web site to
view the program schedule, speakers, exhibitors, and sponsors. They can also connect with
other attendees and interact via social media. There were five 75-minute Breakout Sessions
apart from 62 Learning Labs and 38 IGNITE! Sessions. Furthermore, the presentations were
linked to session topics.
Robothespian, a life sized interactive humanoid robot, thrilled the attendees with greetings,
expressions and a choice of coloured LED body lighting. Robothespian is remote control
from a tablet PC with telepresence.
Sections Congress is a triennial
gathering of IEEE grassroots
leadership to:
network with other Section
leaders;
attend training programs;
develop recommendations to
guide the future of IEEE.
This year IEEE Member and
Geographic Activities (MGA)
Board partnered with Region 8 in
hosting IEEE Sections Congress
2014 (SC2014) in Amsterdam,
Netherlands, at the Rai
Convention Center, from 22 to 24
August 2014.

The 2014 IEEE Honors Ceremony was held on 23
August 2014 with the theme “Inspire” The honorees are
those who have served to inspire others as leaders within
industry and academia. There are those whose work
itself is the inspiration that drives successors to keep
moving the state-of-art forward. There were
presentations for Corporate Recognitions, Service
Awards, IEEE Honorary Membership, IEEE Joint Award
and IEEE Medals.
The Closing Ceremony was held on 24 August 2014. Tom
McKee, keynote speaker, spoke on volunteer experience.
Seismic shifts in volunteerism, and the knowledge-based
economy has resulted in a new breed of volunteers. Volunteer
leaders do not manage volunteers but empower them.
Additionally, volunteer leaders do not ask for a long-term
commitment but a one-time event commitment. Primary Section
Delegates had voted for five (5) prioritized recommendations
during IEEE Sections Congress 2014.

IEEE Malaysia WIE Affinity Group Special Session was held on the 15th of April 2014 in conjunction with the IEEE
Region-10 Technical Symposium 2014 at Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This event was held
to provide a platform for women engineers in IEEE to understand more about WIE, to network and to share their
success stories. This event, chaired by Dr. Lee Yoot Khuan, was joined by about 25 participants, which comprises of
both men and women engineers and academicians in engineering. Prof. Dr. Takako Hashimoto, IEEE WIE Region-10
Coordinator, spoke about the mission of WIE, which among others are to recognize outstanding women engineers,
advocate women in leadership roles, and to facilitate the development of programs and activities that promote entry
into and retention of women in engineering through a video presentation. She also urged all the participants to engage
in activities that can promote a ‘zero gender gap society’. Finally, she congratulated WIE Malaysia in successfully
organizing this event. WIE Malaysia was honored to have Ir. Hjh. Khalidah Binti Haron (former Managing Director of
the New ILSAS, TNB) to give an inspiring and lively talk on ‘Charting Your Own Journey, Defining Your Own
Success’. Ir. Khalidah challenged the participants to question the meaning of success, the importance of being
successful, and the types of ideal outcomes desired by each individual. She shared her success stories and encouraged
us to be self-actualizing leaders. Best paper awards sponsored by Region-10 WIE were also presented to three young
women engineers. The winners were selected based on the technical content and presentation of their papers.
