IEEE Distinguished Lecturer Program
IEEE Distinguished Lecturers are engineering professionals who help lead their fields in new technical developments that shape the global community. These experts specialize in the field of interest of their Society/Council and travel to various technical and regional groups, such as Society and Technical Council Chapters, to lecture at events.
The program provides lectures worldwide to present topics of current interest for chapter meetings. The program intends to bring experts otherwise not available to the chapters, other technical meetings interest to Sensors Councils, and enhances technical activities.
IEEE Sensors Council Distinguished Lecturer Program The Sensors Council’s Distinguished Lecturer Program (DLP) promotes the field of
Sensors to the broad engineering and scientific community, and to the public at large.
Lectures are meant to be public events and can be given at local IEEE chapters, at universities and companies, high schools, senior citizen homes, science fairs, science museums, etc. The Program is to be administered by a DLP Committee comprised of the VP-Technical Activities (VP-TA), VP-
Publications, and at least two additional members. Representation from multiple regions (Americas, Europe, Asia/Pacific) is a priority.
Nominations for Distinguished Lecturers shall be solicited from the Sensors Council AdCom, Chairs and Co-Chairs of Technical Committees, Editorial Board of the Sensors Journal, and current DLs. A solicitation call for nominations shall appear on the Sensors Council web site.
Any IEEE member of any SC member society can nominate a candidate. A nominee must be an IEEE member. Self-nominations are allowed. During their terms the ExCom members cannot be nominated.
As part of this work, VP-TA sends each nominee a description of DL responsibilities. The DL nominees must confirm in writing their willingness to serve, and present their full CV, the list of publications, and a complete list of their serving, in the last five years and next few years if known, on governing bodies in and outside of IEEE – such as editorial boards, leadership roles in professional conferences, etc.
The list of recommended appointments is then submitted by VP-TA to the SC President Elect for approval.
Sensors Council’s Distinguished Lecturers Program Brian T. Cunningham, (2012 – 2014); Professor, ECE, University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign http://www.ece.illinois.edu/directory/profile.asp?bcunning
Elfed Lewis, (2013 – 2015 - APPOINTED: JULY 2013); University of Limerick, UK
2014 activities Several presentations as invited/key-note speaker at different conferences (IEEE and non-
IEEE events),
Several presentations – seminars at other non-conference events (universities/workshops)
Recently requested funding to attend and deliver an invited talk at the 6th International Conference on Automation, Robotics and Applications (ICARA) conference, Queensland, NZ, in February 2015). http://icara.massey.ac.nz/invited_lewis.asp
Title: Recent Developments on Optical Fibre Sensors for Medical Oncology Applications
Discussion and Motion to Approve Funding
Motion – AdCom to approve the funding request from Elfed Lewis to attend and deliver invited lecture at the 6th International Conference on Automation, Robotics and Applications (ICARA) conference, Queensland, NZ, in February 2015
Future Funding Requests Should submit a formal proposal (not to exceed one page),
explaining the importance of attending a meeting/conference to the Sensors Council activities
Should accompany with the even organizers’ invitation
Priority should be given to attend and give lectures at the IEEE Chapter events
Priority should be given to IEEE events
Priority should be given proximity of the lecture location to the “home institution”
Call for Nominations for Sensors Council Distinguished Lecturer Call was issued and sent to former/present adcom members,
former/present associate editors in mid-summer
Received three names (nominations)
Distinguished Lecturer Nominees
Prof. Michael Shur, Professor of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Eng , Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY
Prof. Silvano Donati; Chair Professor, University of Pavia, Italy & National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan
Prof Zeynep Celik-Butler, Professor of Electrical Engineering, University of Texas at Arlington, Arlington, TX
Motion – to endorse appointment the nominees presented above as the Distinguished Lecturer of Sensors Council with a term of 2-years starting January 1, 2015.
Future of DL program
Need to appoint another DL from Region 10 (possibly also from Region 9)
Developing a revised write up describing the selection process and duties of DLs
Developing steps to match the DLs with the Chapters and other local meetings where DLs can easily travel to events
Developing funding structure and guidelines for request for funding by DLs and/or Chapters for attending/hosting lectures

Why should the Society / Council Care about (it’s) Chapters?
Increased Technical activities for Members – Lectures, Workshops, Conferences, Social and Professional events
Technical activities for “potential IEEE & S/C members” – Especially where cost of IEEE membership is too high or where
IEEE is not well-established Increased visibility of the Society / Council – its structure - its publications - its meetings
Resource for potential Society leadership – Most ADCom members and Society Leaders evolved from their
Chapter activities Resource for hosting Society Symposia/Conferences
IEEE Chapters Structure (cont.)
Section (primary responsibility for finance) Reporting to Sections, and receiving funding from MGA If not reporting meeting activities, chapters become “inactive”
Society (support technical activities) No incentive (and maybe requirement) to report back to the society
Often the two “parents” are not on speaking terms Society / Council ask MGA the status of Chapters
