Dispel These Common Myths about the IELTS Test and Brush up Your Preparations
With growing inclination of our youngsters towards overseas education, cracking the IELTS Exam with a
cheerful Band Score has become equally important. You probably hear a lot of quizzical things that may
either discourage you or make your preparations tough. Believe me, IELTS is not that difficult to crack
and most of these quizzical things are nothing other than myths. In this paper, we will reveal truth
behind these myths.
Let’s MythBust the IELTS Test:
Myth #1 I need to speak with a Western Accent to pass the Speaking Test.
Speaking part is the most challenging part for many students. This is because students think that they
need to use western accent during the test and for non-native speakers, it’s so difficult. BUT reality is
that during the IELTS speaking test, you should use your own accent. Focus should be on accuracy of
words as well as grammar and pace of speaking.
Myth #2 Speaking is the most important part of the IELTS Test.
This is not true. Undoubtedly, speaking is bit challenging for non-native speakers, but all parts (Speaking,
Listening, Reading and Writing) of the IELTS Test matters equally. While calculating overall Band scores,
all four parts are taken into count. So prepare focusing on all modules equally.
Myth #3 I Must Include As Many Practice Tests As Possible In My Preparation Activities.
Carefully! Mostly, students think that like their grade or competitive exams, they should practice IELTS
practice tests as much as possible. False! I won’t say that practice tests are not helpf ul. They are, but
only for understanding exam pattern. Understand, IELTS is not about checking your knowledge, but it is
all about checking your English language proficiency. Focus on your grammar, vocabulary, accuracy and
confidence.
Myth #4 I need to Score 7+ Band to the IELTS Test.
The score you need totally depends upon the purpose for which you are taking the IELTS Test. Let
suppose, you are taking the IELTS test because you want to study a Master Program in an English-
Speaking country then you need to pass the IELTS criteria set by university or college offering that
Master Program to you. IELTS Score requirement varies from country to country and purpose to
purpose.
Myth #5 I Don’t Need To Take Coaching Classes. I Can Prepare Myself.
Although you can prepare yourself, but preparation under professional guidance always works. Most of
the students, who get excellent overall score, attend IELTS institutes for taking coaching classes and
prepare with experts. For example, Student Manpreet Kaur scored overall 7.0 Band and showed
gratitude towards her IELTS coaching in Chandigarh named Western Overseas.
