1º ESO UNIT 5 TEXTURES, NETS & PATTERNS

TEXTURE:The nature of the surface of painting, sculpture, or building materials.

Texture is one of the formal art elements. We can experience it by the senses of SIGHT and TOUCH.

(Formal art elements: line, shape, form, color, texture, space, value (lights & darks)

Texture can be simulated by the artist, for example making something look as though it is rough, or it can be made actual, for example the surface being textured either because of thickly applied paint, or the addition of granular material to the paint, such as sand. Texture can also be created by sticking items to the surface of the composition, as in collage. Paint can be built up into rough peaks in a technique called impasto.

TACTILE TEXTURETactile means touch. Tactile texture is the actual (3D) feel of a surface.

VISUAL TEXTUREVisual texture refers to the illusion of the surface's texture. It is what tactile texture looks like (on a 2D surface).

The textures you see in a photograph are visual textures.

GEOMETRIC TEXTURESYou can create geometric patterns by using ruler, set squares, compass or by using computer software.

ORGANIC TEXTURESThis type of textures ressemble the way a living being grows.

ACTIVITY #1:In a standard A4 sheet, divide the paper into two halves and create two different textures, one of them

geometric and the other organic.

You can use any technique: pencils, felt-tips, crayons, collage...

ACTIVITY #2 (MAIN ACTIVITY):

Create different textured surfaces (size A4) using these techniques:

DRAWING

STAMPING

SCRATCHING

FROTTAGE (=RUBBERING)

DRIPPING & SPRAYING

COLLAGE (= GLUEING)

Then, draw different regular polygon shapes, using ruler, set square and compass. Ask your teacher for help.

Cut cardboard templates with a simple geometric shape.

Cut out the textures into geometric pieces using the templates.

Combine different pieces to build a geometric-repetitive pattern (like ceramic tiles). Glue the pieces on an A3

surface.

Tiles: Nazari tiles

ACTIVITY #3:

Write a little essay with illustration. This little project must include:

Definition of texture.

Definition of pattern.

Difference between texture and pattern.

A few words about nazari tiles.

Images of each topic.

A map of the nazari location, including dates.

(you can draw, trace or print, but the text must be written by hand).
