Jeff and Dan visited the Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park this month, where Jeff got to see some of his most prized animals; birds! During the day, there was discussion of the various animals found at the location, which contained a number of rare animals. This was followed by a long walk around Birmingham's prestigious Victorian Cannon Hill Park, where during a moment of getting lost, they stumbled across the Birmingham Church of Scientology!

Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park is home to a unique collection of animals from across the world, including Red Pandas, lemurs, reptiles, meerkats, otters, birds, wallabies and a large collection of monkeys. Some of the animals are endangered in the wild and they play an important role in their species’ conservation.

Some students got to visit Kingsbury Water Park on a school trip for the last week of term. Lorna and Abigail both had an amazing time exploring the grounds and all the attractions.

Did you know…

It has fifteen lakes situated in over 600 acres of country park.

It is renowned for its birdlife, and is popular with birdwatchers.

Kingsbury Water Park lies on the River Tame and borders on the western edge by Fazeley Canal.

Abigail and Lorna got to visit Plantasia recently on a school trip with staff. Abigail loved the fish, especially the Koi carp in the pond. Lorna loved the Alpacas, and gave Rolo the Alpaca a big kiss! They had a competition to see who could make it through the mazes first. Lorna won the Japanese and North African maze, Abigail won the Canadian and British mazes, and they both got lost in the Australian maze! They learned a lot about the vegetation in different countries and had a great day overall.

Fun Facts…

Alpacas can live up to 20 years.

Despite their differences with llamas, alpacas can successfully breed with llamas, resulting in offspring known as a huarizo.

Koi fish are sensitive to the sun. They may get sunburns if they live in the ponds that do not provide enough shadow.

Koi fish release ammonia in the water.

Lorna and Abigail went to Bosworth Water Park on the last day of term. They enjoyed being by the water and even went for a paddle in the glorious sunshine. They learned about the carp and even got chance to feed them and the hungry ducks too!

Lorna has made this beautiful poster with Katherine in her Arts Award lesson! She has made all the butterflies by hand! Well done!

Alex enjoyed visiting Dobbies Garden Centre and walking around Plantastia. He navigated the maze exceptionally well (whilst dodging bugs) but his favourite part was the Alpacas!!!

Alex made these delicious churros in his Spanish lesson! Bueno!

Lorna made this beautiful origami butterfly during her Arts Award lesson with Katherine and this cushion in her textiles lessons with Lynda. Isn’t it just awesome!

Welcome to July’s edition of our IES gazette, and our penultimate edition.

I do hope you are enjoying the heatwave that the UK is experiencing - I kind of regret spending now on a foreign holiday this year when we have such glorious weather (I’m a sunshine fan), in fact we have such a beautiful country and every time I holiday in the UK I am very happy. Cornwall and Devon are some of our favourites here across the IES staff team. Are you going away this year? Where to? Perhaps post some of your photographs on our closed Facebook page, and we can keep in touch. Joe has already done this and it’s been lovely to see him having such fun (as well as meeting the stars!) on his recent Haven holiday. Smiles all round

This edition is packed full again and perhaps you will be even reading July’s edition on a beach somewhere? It’s definitely worth packing in your suitcase! Across these pages you will be sure to find out more about some of the ways we have been enjoying the good weather here at school. Sports Day being one - where lots of our staff and pupils took part in a range of sporting activities- what a giggle it looked!

We also show incentive day here - the idea being that pupils ‘earn’ money each day at school against their personalised targets, which then gets translated into a whole range of bespoke activities - have a look at what we decided to spend our reward money on - obviously the better we do against our targets, the wider range of activities become available for our pupils- hence it being important to opt in and do well at school.

IES also welcomed a visit from Ofsted this July - a full 3-day inspection that is typical of independent schools. Thank you to all parents who completed questionnaires for this time, and who completed Ofsted’s ‘Parent View’ online. It was a very long three days at the tail end of the year, and we had some very helpful feedback, so all in all the timing was positive as we can put any necessary changes in place for September’s timetable, which will be with you before your child starts back at school.

In June, I wrote to all parents and carers and the local authorities we serve to let them know I am finishing as headteacher at IES this month. I have been a headteacher here for six years, and I will reflect more on the highs and lows of this in August’s edition. It’s certainly been a journey and I am very proud of the community of like-minded people we have created. Sometimes special needs can feel very lonely, and I hope that we have been able to sometimes support and help with what your child needs. This aim is still something we very much want to continue at IES as the company moves forward- that there is always someone here who can signpost support for you. Use this. It can be a real lifeline when things are tough.

I will be sending out the new hierarchical structure of IES for September, so as usual you can know who to contact, who is your child’s keyworker, and who to contact to ask for the help you might need from time to time. Again- please do. We all need a little help from time to time!

Thank you for your continued support, and don’t forget to apply your sunscreen, wear your hat, and (of course) take the opportunity to relax.

Until next edition,

Leanne

Some of our students were fortunate enough to go on a day trip to Stratford Upon Avon as part of an enrichment day for History. They got to explore Tudor World and have a go on the boats all in the glorious sunshine! Here are just a few photos of their time.

Stratford Upon Avon Facts…

Stratford is the 16th-century birthplace of William Shakespeare. Possibly the most famous writer in the English language.

The town has its roots in Anglo-Saxon times. Stratford upon Avon's name is derived from a mixture of the Celtic and Saxon languages and simply means 'a river that is crossed by a ford'.

Sports day went off without a hitch this year. The students all had fun and we even had some parents turn out in support. There were relay and sack races, hooler hooping, water fights and blindfolded obstacle courses. The staff and students were all very competitive but there could only be one winner… Lorenzo! He completely stole the show, well done Lorenzo.
