OPTIMISEA Simulation-based Optimisation Tool for the Minimisation of Building Carbon Emissions

Completed: August 2012

Development of an Optimisation Tool that gives better guidance on impact of design decisions and enables the delivery of low impact and zero carbon buildings. The tool optimises complex design factors such as glazed area, choice of construction materials, building orientation and compliance based on objectives such as energy consumption, carbon emissions and cost and constraints such as achieving specific daylight factor values.

LESSONSBetter guidance on design decisions to deliver zero carbon and low impact buildings

LESSONS is a knowledge-sharing website for low impact buildings, where case studies and template IESVE simulation models from previous projects can be stored in an online database. It supplies users with easy access to the knowledge gained and lessons learnt by construction professionals, and when dealing with less familiar or new technologies it offers the ability to integrate designs directly into the IES Virtual Environment software for virtual testing.

IMPACT allows construction professionals to integrate the measurement of the embodied environmental impact and life cycle cost performance of buildings. It is fully integrated into 3D CAD/BIM (Building Information Modelling) software tools and the results generated can be used in whole building assessment schemes like BREEAM. IES was involved in the development of the methodology and was the first to release IMPACT Compliant tools.

Aimed at improving deep retrofit designand implementation by managing the process, from the preliminary audit up to end-of-life. Robust, cost-effective, and tailorable deep renovation technology packages will be supported by usable methodologies to improve information flow and knowledge sharing among participants. This will result in up to a 70% reduction in energy use and 15% in life cycle costs, while cutting the current renovation time in half.

Created a citizen engagement app to help businesses and individuals understand the energy consumption of their buildings and how to reduce it. Suitable retrofit suggestions were made and the impact quantified for their specific buildings. The app also facilitated city-scale assessments of energy use via a 3D map that allowed users to view the city’s energy performance at both the district and building level. www.glasgowenergyapp.org

CEDISON is the first of its kind to define a way to capture the benefits of local energy balancing markets, at the building and district level. Enhancing consumer digitalisation, and being able to measure the impact of rural and city district microgrids, it will examine the synergy between (i) Distributed Ledger Technologiess, (ii) intelligent building monitoring and control at the community level, including forecasting based on weather and electricity price and (iii) Peer-to-Peer trading to smart energy systems.

Exploiting Innovation IES has a successful funding record as both an experienced manager and a collaborator on a number of grant funded research projects.

We have been successful in producinga number of commercially viableproducts as a result of R&D projects.

Notable examples include:

– IMPACT Compliant Suite of BREEAM linked Life Cycle Cost and Life Cycle Analysis tools, developed in conjunction with the BRE.

– HONE and Parametric Optimisation Suite that brings multiple performance analysis simulation and optimisation capabilities into mainstream building services engineering.

– ERGON which enables operational building performance data to be utilised in new building design to help close the performance gap.

– Glasgow Energy App which as part of the Future Cities project enabled citizens and the council to understand building and community energy use.
