Alexander Graham Bell: a distinguished

scientist, innovator and the originator; known

chiefly as the inventor of the ‘Telephone’, was

born on March 3, 1847, in Edinburgh, Scotland.

For most of his life, the younger Alexander was

known as "Aleck" to family and friends. He had

two brothers, Melville and Edward, both of

whom died from

School from which he dropped out.

In 1864 Bell began work as a teacher at Elgin's Western House Academy. In

1871, He opened school for the teachers of deaf in Boston and in 1873 became

professor of vocal physiology at city's university. In 1876, at the age of 29, Bell

invented his TELEPHONE. He devised over fifty other inventions that were well

ahead of their time. In 1877, he formed ‘Bell Telephone Company’, where he’d

make millions; becoming one of the richest men alive during his life and in the

same year married Mabel Hubbard and had two daughters. His rare

intellectual inquisitiveness kept him regularly searching and striving through

a long and productive life. “CONCENTRATE ALL YOUR THOUGHTS UPON THE

WORK AT HAND. THE SUN'S RAYS DO NOT BURN UNTIL BROUGHT TO A

FOCUS.” By Alexander Graham Bell.

Among one of his first innovations after the telephone was the "photophone,"

a device that enabled sound to be transmitted on a beam of light. Bell

regarded the photophone as "The greatest invention I have ever made;

greater than the telephone”, He later improved this and produced a device

called a telephone probe.

Bell had begun experimenting with propellers and kites. His work led him to

apply the concept of the tetrahedron to kite design as well as to create a new

form of architecture. In 1883 Bell invented the graphophone, the first practical

system of sound recording. In 1898 Bell became president of the National

geographic society. In his later years Bell took a keen interest in aeronautics.

In 1919, he produced a hydrofoil craft. He was a remarkable person whose achievements encouraged young scientists. He devoted his life to the benefit of humankind. He worked in the fields of medicine, marine engineering, genetics, electrical science, sheep-breeding, artificial respiration, desalinization, water distillation and greatly, advanced the methods of teaching deaf people to communicate. One of his most famous students Helen Keller, who came to him as a child unable to see, hear and speak; attributed its occurrence to bell "The door through which I should pass from darkness into light”. Bell died in Nova Scotia, Canada, on 2nd August, 1922.

IET Project Day To bridge the gap among juniors and seniors, IET Living Library conducted a two day event; “IET Project Day”. In these two sessions, seniors guided all attendees about their project. Audience shared their technical problems with instructors and sought help from them regarding their semester projects. According to the feedback of participants, this event proved to be very helpful for them and assisted them in the completion of their projects. Best projects of the seniors were also displayed in the hall to inspire juniors for hard work.

Proverb of the Month

"The pen is mightier than the sword." Trying to convince people with ideas and words is more effective than trying to force them with violence.

Science This Month

Bioengineers take the first step toward printing replacement tissue. Could

tomorrow’s surgeons create customized replacement tissue for patients just

by hitting print? Two teams of Harvard bioengineers made big strides toward

that goal in 2014, reporting two new 3-D-printing methods that help

construct rudimentary blood vessels. Each year, thousands of people die

waiting for tissue and organ donations, which are scarce. For that reason,

tissue engineers are working to build replacements, and they’ve managed to

do it for sheet like tissues.

Google’s car is the face of future robots. Google’s self-driving car prototype

represents a cuddly vision of th e robot future that is almost the complete

opposite of what most dystopian science

fiction films have imagined. The

vehicle’s headlights combine with a pert

“nose” to give the impression of a

wide-eyed baby confronting the

world for the first time. Wired has described

the car as “an egg with the face of a koala. ” Cartoonist Matthew Inman,

creator of the popular website The Oatmeal, dubbed the Google cars

“adorable Skynet Marshmallow Bumper Bots.” In other words, Google’s car

has a face that wordlessly people to trust it when they see the driverless

vehicle ambling down the road.
