The inmates have perfect freedom of the grounds, and are allowed the priv- ilege of visiting friends outside the grounds whenever they notify the Matron of their wish to do so. On Sundays, those who are able and wish to go, are driven to one cf the native churches in a very comfortable wagonette. They have an abundance of good food, and are given meat twice each day ; in fact, they are supplied with everything which tends to make them happy and con- tented. The Aermotor has been given a fair test, and found to do the same work in a fair wind as the steam engine ; that is, to work the monster pump thirty strokes per minute, and raise two thous- and gallons of water per hour. determine whether it be sea orriver water. Another disturbingcircumstance is that an occasionalvery stroug breeze, acting on thesurface of a large sheet of suchvery shallow water, drives thewater back perhaps half a mile andthen a change of wind brings itback beyond its former marginThus it is impossible to determine, except at long intervals, whetherthe volume of water be increasingor no.

The editor of the Eedlands Factsreturned from an inspection of thelake on Julv 1st. and reports itW 9 A.tnen to be at least twelve miles inwidth at Salton, and from the pointwhere the switch connects the saltworks with the Southern PacificEailroad. the water extends fartherthan the eye can reach..

Though all sorts of theories areheld at Salton; latterly the generally accepted notion is that thewater comes from the Gulf of California.

Latest accounts declare that thewater is still rising slowly.

    CORRESPONDENCE.

We do not hold ourselves responsible for thestatements made, or opinions expressed by ourcorrespondents.

air. .Editor: When you asked meon the morning of the 28th inst., if thestatement in your issue of that date byJ.tE. Brown, charterer of the Pactolus, was correct, I told you I thought it bestto say nothing. But taking the privi- -lege of the many, I have changed mymind. Mr. J. E. Brown, charterer oftive Pactolus, uses the words " mislead-ing and untrue " in his statement. Hethen says " the Pactolus (by whichvessel I was a passenger from China)put into Kawaihae on the 13th inst., notbecause provisions or water were short, but simply because the captain considered the wind unfavorable for gettingthe vessel to Mahukona. intending toget underway again when the windchanged." This part of Mr.J.E.Brown's,charterer of the Pactolus, statement ismisleading and false, which he knewwas such when be wrote the statement,as the accompanying letters will show :

Ship Pactolus, at Sea, )Off Kawaihae Bay, 14th July, 1891. J

Captain Beadle, Ship Pactolus:Dear Sir : Since you have expressed

your intention of making a circuit of theisland of Hawaii prior to trying again toenter the bay of Mahukona, 1 herebyrequest that, under the circumstances, rather than make this detour, you willbe good enough to take your ship directto the bay of Kawaihae, and thereanchor.

I am, dear sir, yours truly,J. E. Brown,

    Charterer Ship Pactolus.

    Ship Pactolus, Kawaihae, )July 15th, 1891. J

Captain Beadle, Ship Pactolus:Dear Sir : 1 hereby notify you that

the United States Consular Agent atMahnkona has, by letter of 14th inst.ordered the Pactolus to proceed with allpossible dispatch to that port.

1 have also received an omcial notinca- -tion from the Secretary of the Board ofImmigration, written from Mahukona onsame date, desiring that the instructionsof the U. S. Consular Agent be carriedout with the least possible delay.

I am, dear sir, yours faithfully,J. E. Brown,

    Charterer Ship Pactolus.

The facts of the case are these : OnTuesday, July 14th, shortly after noon,I. having tried to work into Mahukona, sometimes being under close-reefe- d top-sails, for two days, and found it impossible to accomplish, 1 concluded to runaround the island and try to come inclose to the land. I ordered my mate tomake all sail, and steer south. About1p.m.. Mr. J. E. Brown, Charterer ofthe Pactolus, probably having the in-formation from the mate that I was go-ing to run around the island, came to myroom, and protested. 1 tola him 1 understood how to take care of my vesselwithout his assistance. He then informed m?, with fear and m sery depicted on his countenance that wouldhave soiteued the 'heart of a nethermillstone," that if I persisted, I wouldbe becaljned and be weeks before Ireached Mahukona, and he only hadfour days' provisions on board, and hefeared a mutiny ; his countenance wasdistressing to look at. I asked him whathe wanted me to do; to run in andanchor at Kawaihae? He replied"Yes; 1 can then communicatewith my parties at Mahukona."I then requested him to give me writ-ten instructions to that effect, and Iwould execute them. He said he wouldcomply immediately. I replied, " I willthen get the ship into Kawaihae." Iwent on deck and worked the ship intoKawaihae and came to anchor about 4p. m. I hoisted the American flag, andshortly the Postmaster, Captain of thePort, etc., came off in a canoe, and Itook the letter from Mr. J. E. Brown,Charterer of the Pactolus, and put it be-tween the strands of a rope and loweredit down to the aforesaid official, and Mr.J. E. Brown, Charterer of the Pactolus, requested him to dispatch it at once asit was very important. I did not readthat letter, but Mr. J. E. FKIDAY, JULY 31, 1891

To-da- y, July 31st, was formerlyobserved as a holiday, on accountof the restoration of the HawaiianFlag on this date, which was hauleddown by Lord George Paulet somemonths prior. The observance ofthe day fell into desuetude on ac-count of the nature of the occur-rences connected with the affairwhich it helped to keep in remem-brance. For Admiral Thomas theHawaiians will always retain afragrant memory, not so, how-ever, for Lord George.

    A SINGULAR OCCURRENCE.

Much attention has been recentlydrawn to the lake in process offormation in the Colorado desertnear Salton, and on July 1st within2,000 feet of the Southern PacificRailway track, which runs down toFort Yuma.

Every year there is a flow sup-posed to be from the Rio Colorado, which usually spreads over a de-pression commonly known as " thesink," but this year the waters aresaid to have broken out a little tothe north of the ordinary spot, ornearer to Yuma.

To the north of the " sink," andsouthwest of Salton, is a long bean-shape-d

tract named in some mapsthe " old dry :lake;" between thesetwo depressions is a high ridge ofclay; nevertheless there is now inthe "old dry lake" an area of watercovering thirty miles in one direc-tion, and twelve in another. Thisis only twenty-on- e inches deep, butin the sink itself there is now abody of water very much largerand deeper than usual. The engin-eers of the Southern Pacific thinkthat the water from the sink haspercolated the ground under theclay ridge and so has entered theold dry lake.

Several exploring expeditionshave been sent out to discover andtrace the supply of water, but theheat in the desert is so unbearablethat it is impossible for any whiteman to venture on a journey at thistime of the year.

A boat expedition from San Pedrofound a stiff breeze blowing andthe sailors were driven five milesout of their course. At a pointfifteen miles from Salton theyfound a current running at therate of four and a half miles anhour, but the water was only four-teen inches deep. The deepest theyfound was twenty-on- e inches, andthat at a spot where there wereeight inches the day before. Thesailors were compelled to returnsoon after the sun rose, as the heatwas intolerable. However, theystarted out again the next nightthough they cannot go far in anydirection on account of the shallow-ness of the water. When they firstwent out they found the waterquite saltish, but the second day itwas 17 per cent, fresher, which islooked upon as another confirma

Dalgety & Co., of Newcastle, re-port the coal trade of that port asfollows, on July 7, 1891:

The past month has been very un-satisfactory to the colliery proprietors olthis district, owning to a variety ofcauses. The excessive boisterousweather experienced on the Australiancoast has delayed the arrival of manysailing vessels as well as steamers. Thelow freights now offering from the Welshports to California and the continuedpolitical difficulties on the west coast ofbouth America have had a very depress-ing influence upon the recent export ofcoal ; but, notwithstanding this, the ex-port of coal from Newcastle during thefirst six months of 1891 has amounted to1,133,402 tons, or an increase of 225,813tons -- over the corresponding period of1890. This shows that although there isa desire on the part of many people whoare interested in the Sydney and south-ern collieries to convince the public thatour export trade is decreasing, the factstill remains that the foreign and inter-colonial export of our staple commodityis steadily increasing, and we anticipatethat when the totals are made up forthe year 1891 they will show the largestexport on record. In addition, it is sat-isfactory to note that the tonnage listedto arrive in the Colonies is very heavyand we may reasonably expect for New-castle a fair proportion of this.

    Prices are : Best screened coal, 11 s. ;unscreened, 10 s. 6 d. ; snail, 5 s. 6 d. to6 8.; washed blacksmiths', 8 s.; bestWallsend washed coke, 35 s.; best co-operative coke, 35 s.

Freights Rates generally are verylow, and only few fixtures are reportedfor the month.

    Louisiana's Sugar Crop andBounties.

A Philadelphia Press specialfrom New Orleans says: The newbounty law passed by the last Con-gress requires that all applicationsfor the bounty must be filed withthe Internal Kevenue Departmentbefore July 1. They have beenpouring in since the beginning ofJune at the rate of from twenty tofifty a day, and it is supposed thatall of them have now been filed. There are 840 sugar plantations inLouisiana, but only about 600 haveapplied for the bounty, and it isprobable that a number of thesewill make no application for thefunds, as the sugar they turn outwill not come within the provisionsof the law requiring that it shouldcontain ninety per cent of saccha-rine, and it would cost them toomuch to make the improvementsneeded to turn out a better gradeof sugar upon which the bounty ispaid. A capitalist here hadarranged for the erection of a re-finery for the low-grad- e sugarsturned out by the small plantersso that they would have the benefitoi tne Dounty, but it was discoveredthat this could not be done underthe law. The consequence is thattne smaller larmers, those who cul-tivate under 200 acres and manu-facture their ,own sugar, will beunable to secure any bounty.

A New Firearm. The Elko Independent says that

    R. M. Catiin," of Tuscarora, Nev.,has invented, perfected and patent-ed one of the most compIete, simple, compact and rapid-firin- g rifles onearth. By a simple device, themagazine, consisting of twelve tosixteen snots, can be dischargedmore rapidly than a man can countor the shot can be regulated so asto be fired one by one, slow or fast,as may be required. This gun issimple and accurate at long orshort range, and has been tested inthe last few days over three thous-and times without failure in anyparticular. The penetration of theprojectile is equal, if not superior,to any fiream yet brought out, andthe range so far tested is from 500
