High Efficiency, High Capacity Glass-Free Filtration Media With Richard Barlow, Knowlton Technologies and Keh Dema, Eastman Chemical

A glass-free filter media solution can address the growing concern of inorganic fiber shedding, which can irreversibly damage sensitive automotive components downstream of the filtration media. This presentation will demonstrate the performance that can be achieved with an innovative glass-free filtration media design. The results shared are based on the ISO 16889 and ISO 19438 tests, demonstrating the viability that this filter media can have in diesel fuel and hydraulic filter applications.

Cellulose Filaments: A New Raw Material for Wetlaid Filter Media With François Drolet, Cloé Bouchard-Aubin and Natalie Pagé, FPInnovations

Cellulose Filament (CF) is a biomaterial derived from wood pulp fibers through mechanical action. CF combines high specific surface, sub-micron transverse dimensions and very high aspect ratio, making it a very attractive material for filtration applications. This presentation will discuss how the addition of CF can improve filtration efficiency and mechanical properties of wetlaid media made from either wood pulp or glass microfibers. In particular, it will show that CF can advantageously replace conventional binders in some applications.

Design and Optimization of Fibrous Filter Media Using Life-Time SimulationsWith Mehdi Azimian, Christopher Kühnle, Liping Cheng, Andreas Wiegmann, Math2Market GmbH

Filter media optimization is one of the most critical tasks to improve overall filter performance. Traditional methods of media optimization involve numerous expensive, time-consuming experiments. By using computer simulations, one can optimize fibrous filter media by increasing the dust holding capacity (DHC), while maintaining the ß ratio and initial pressure drop of the filter media.

The key idea is the use of microstructure models to optimize the filter media. To generate microstructure models of various fibrous filter media, the FiberGeo module of the GeoDict® software is used, while the FlowDict and FilterDict modules are used to simulate the flow behavior and to predict particle filtration behavior of media.

Join us as both regimes of particles filtration, depth filtration and cake filtration, are modelled and can be observed. You’ll witness how, by modifying the microstructure of filter media, the macroscopic properties of the filter element can be improved.

Criticism of the new standard, particularly in regard to its relevance in the North American HVAC market, has quickly emerged via social media.
