A Course in Miracles

Celebrating50 Years

asking of us to complete our real educa-tion, and learn how we can become “stu-dent of the month!”

Are you a self-motivated learner?Do you want a better way? “This is a

course in miracles. It is a required course.Only the time you take it is voluntary.”These are the beginning words in the text’sintroduction. Just as any academic class

you might take, ACourse in Miracles givesyou a “syllabus” thattells you what it is, whatis required, and thenthe rest is up to you.The effort you put intothe Course becomesthe benefit or lack ofbenefit you receive. Those who want to learnwill find wisdom that

can last them a lifetime.I still remember the invaluable lessons

of classes I took many years ago, but I alsoknow it was because I wanted to learn; Iput in the effort. If you feel the Course isyour path, then you need to give it theeffort it asks. The Course is telling us that acourse in awakening to your reality in loveis required (whether it be A Course inMiracles or some other path), but the timeyou take it is voluntary. Only you can hon-estly answer the question as to whether

e’s a very self-motivated learner.He asks questions, helps others,

and frequently communicates with mewhen he needs help.” That was the noteour son Jeffrey brought home from schoolwhen he was selected student of themonth. His high school chemistry teacherhad nominated him, and he was honoredto have been selected and to receive a but-ton which he woreproudly on his shirt. We were thrilled for

him, but I was espe-cially taken by thewords his teacherwrote because thesentiment seemed tobe exactly what we allneed to be doing tosucceed in our spiri-tual growth. It’s alsowhat A Course inMiracles is asking us to do to learn thiscourse. We must want a better way, question every value we hold dear, remember salvation is a collaborativeventure, and communicate with God whenwe need help.Just because some of us may have

ended our formal worldly educationdoesn’t mean our spiritual education hasceased. We know how important it is tocontinue to stimulate our brains, so let’s in-vestigate a little further what the Course is

“n celebration of the 50th anniver-sary of A Course in Miracles’ birth,

we will be sharing some of its history. The following is from Helen Schuc-man’s autobiography (as shared in Absence from Felicity by KennethWapnick, Ph.D.) and it describes an explanation for the coming of theCourse.

“I was given a sort of mental ‘explanation’... in the form of a series ofrelated thoughts that crossed my mindin rapid succession and made a reasonably coherent whole. Accordingto this ‘information’, the world situation

was worsening atan alarming pace.People all over theworld were beingcalled back to help, and were develop-ing what to themwere highly unex-pected talents, each making his individual contribu-tion to an overall,

prearranged plan. I had apparentlyagreed to take down a course in miracles which the Voice would dictateto me as part of the agreement, andmy doing it was actually my reason forcoming. It did not really involve unex-pected abilities, since I would be usingabilities I had developed very long ago,

As I write this article, I am one weekaway from completing a seven-

week stay at the Western Veteran’s BlindRehabilitation Center in Menlo Park, California. I am still assimilating this experi-ence, which has been life changing, awesome, and challenging. On the first day of my stay, I had just

left my room to go to my instructor’s officewhen I came upon the following scene. There were five veterans with white caneswalking toward me,and three other veter-ans with white caneswalking in the direc-tion I was about totravel. I stopped in mytracks. I immediatelycreated a heart print ofthe scene, and myheart immediately opened to great com-passion for these people. Then, suddenly, I recognized I was legally blind, about towalk with my white cane, and I was notseparate from them — but part of them!I realized I was feeling compassion for

those in front of me, but I did not remem-ber feeling compassion for myself. And Iremembered I am not able to give true loveor compassion to another person unless Iam feeling the same love and compassionfor myself. As I look back on the situation, I realize

I was not considering myself to be a blindperson. I believe that in some way I waspracticing healthy denial and could not seemyself as limited or suffering loss. Howcould I be any of those things if I know mytrue identity is spirit and not a body?I have been a student of the A Course

in Miracles since 1975. I know I am not always in a higher consciousness. But thatday, I was not seeing myself as blind.I believe the Course is about experienc-

ing a new reality where, when we let go ofour old belief in the ego’s fearful agenda, love becomes our only reality. These days, as I walk down the dock to

our houseboat, people will ask me: “Howare you doing today, Jerry? “ My firm answer is always, “My spiritual vision is getting better each day, and I am doinggreater than great.”For many years now, Diane and I have

ingrained in ourselves that we are spiritualbeings, not bodies. We have learned to be-

lieve we are blind whenwe respond to illusionsas if they were real;when we are judgmen-tal; when we believeanger gets us some-thing we really want;and when we are hold-ing onto grievances in-stead of practicing

unconditional love with everyone — includ-ing ourselves. We continue to experiencemore inner peace and joy when we re-member our true home is in the con-sciousness of God. We relish seeing othersas light beams that reflect the light in us.

Another Way of Looking at theWorld.I remember Bill Thetford telling me

about the time when he was in his officewith Helen Schucman and was verystressed about getting funds for his psy-chology department. All of a sudden, hesaid, “There must be a better way of livingin this world.” And to his surprise, Helenheld Bill’s hands and said, “Bill, I agree withyou, and I am willing to help you find thatbetter way.”As I write this article I feel the presence

of Bill and Helen in my office. There is noway of sharing the depth of my apprecia-tion on a daily basis because, by golly,

Another Way of Looking at Blindness... I am determined to see things differently

together they were messengers of a newway of looking at and experiencing life. They showed us how to experience loveand peace as we let go of the blocks weput in the way. I am blessed beyond meas-ure for all the days and years I was able tobe with them, either in person or over thephone.I remember when Judy Skutch Whitson

gave me the manuscript of the Course before it was published. I looked at thetable of contents of the workbook, and myeyes fell on the lesson entitled, “I am determined to see things differently.” Atthat time I mistakenly thought the lessonwas about my learning to see things differ-ently with my physical eyes. Wow, howwrong I was! It took me a long time to believe and then truly know the lesson wasabout letting go of illusions and learning toexperience love as my only reality. There was a time when I stopped study-

ing the Course because I stubbornly felt Idid not need to take ten minutes out ofevery hour to study the lessons. Threemonths later I returned to the Course withrecognition of how powerful my ego couldbe in wanting to prevent any oneness inthis world. That is why I see our work in Attitudinal Healing — healing the illusion ofseparation — as being so important.During one of my difficult times with the

Course, when I felt a great deal of resist-ance, I decided to create an imaginary clubfor people who felt they were remedial students of the Course. Naturally, I decided to elect myself president of theclub. I think there must be thousands ofstudents who would join this imaginaryclub if they knew about it!In this moment, which is the only time

there is, I am happier and more peacefulthen I ever have been. And I have learnedto navigate in this illusory world withgreater ease.

It wasn’t the Marines that made a man of me, it was KidSingers.” What?! This buff

soldier credited a kid’s choir with making aman out of him instead of the MarineCorps? “Oorah!” Yes, I could hardly believeit myself when I heard KidSinger alumnusand two year veteran of the Marine Corps,Huver Miranda, share that with me. Huverhad been in KidSingers for seven yearsprior to joining the Marines following hishigh school graduation. For those of you whodon’t know, KidSingersis an inner city, after-school youth choir forat-risk kids in grades 3-12 in Santa Ana, California which my wifeBeverly and I foundedeighteen years ago.

Huver went on tosay the KidSingers values of respect, tolerance, fairness, kindness and lovehelped to shape his life into one of pur-pose and meaning. Additionally, becausehis college financial needs would eventu-ally be funded by the G.I. Bill, Huver alsodonated his $4,500 in KidSingers collegescholarship money back to the program. A very magnanimous gesture!

Now in this illusion, I’m not questioningthe efficacy or need for our nation’s armedservices and the daily sacrifices our servicemen and women render for our freedomand safety. I’m grateful for that. But as thewords rolled out of Huver’s mouth, I could-n’t help but sit up and notice the contrastof the two entities he referenced. TheMarines trains warriors — KidSingers trainssingers. The Marines build up one’s body

and spirit and arms it with weapons to kill –KidSingers build up one’s body and spiritto lovingly use as a healing agent. TheMarines teaches one to engage an enemyin fierce combat — KidSingers teaches kidsto engage an audience with inspirationalmusic from their heart. The Marines teachpeace through defense – KidSingersteaches to see the unity of all humankindand inhabit the axiom: “peace begins with

me.” As the Coursesays, “The best defense, as always, isnot to attack another’s position, but rather toprotect the truth.” Pro-tecting the truth is notto condone ones ac-tions in the world, butsimply to join with Godin vigilantly seeing theChrist child in eachand every brother.

In Jesus’ day, many wanted him to takeup the sword and lead a rebellion againstRome so the Hebrew nation could onceagain live in freedom and peace. Instead,he chose otherwise to lead a radical way ofliving; instead of taking up the sword, hebeckoned us to take an expedition into theheart, one that did not call for attack anddefense at all costs, but one that would en-gender love, forgiveness, and goodwill. Hedefined it as the Kingdom of God (heaven). It was not made of brick and mortar, butsomething far more eternal in nature. Andthen he went on to teach the Kingdom wasnot a destination but an attitude. In his Ser-mon on the Mount, Jesus taught; “Blessedare the merciful, for they shall receivemercy; Blessed are the gentle, for they

shall inherit the earth, Blessed are thepeacemakers, for they shall be called sonsof God.”

Jesus further teaches about the King-dom of Heaven in A Course in Miracles:

“Truth is without illusions and thereforewithin the Kingdom. Everything outsidethe Kingdom is illusion. When you threwtruth away you saw yourself as if youwere without it. By making another king-dom that you valued, you did not keeponly the Kingdom of God in your mind, and thus placed part of your mind out-side it. What you made has imprisonedyour will, and given you a sick mind thatmust be healed. Your vigilance againstthis sickness is the way to heal it. Onceyour mind is healed it radiates health, and thereby teaches healing.” (T-6.C.9)

Similarly, the Dalai Lama offers insightinto the kingdom. “The antidote to hatredin the heart, the source of violence, is tol-erance. It enables you to refrain from re-acting angrily to the harm inflicted on youby others. You could call this practice“inner disarmament,” in that a well-devel-oped tolerance makes you free from thecompulsion to counterattack. For the samereason, we also call tolerance the “bestarmor,” since it protects you from beingconquered by hatred itself.”

Beverly and I have often observed howKidSingers represents a stealth version ofteaching A Course in Miracles. Call it an inside job! Without using formal Courselanguage, KidSingers inculcates the content of the Course into each child that participates in the program. Those samevalues Huver learned are assimilated byeach child through the magic of music. The kids go through the process of learn-ing the material, memorizing the words, and then internalizing the message as asubtext for performance. By the time thesinging ultimately germinates in the ears of

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” (Bible: Matthew 5:5)

“The best defense, as always, is not to attack another’s position, but rather to protect the truth.” (T-3.I.2)

Update: Prison ProjectUpdate: Prison Projectby Maria Zakich

As the Course often reminds us, “to give and to receive are one in truth.” The following letter from Margaret in New Zealand beautifully expresses the importance of extending support to those who find themselves within the walls of physical prisons. As we reach out in support, we release everyone with us.

Dear Beverly,I was clearing some papers in my filing cabinet a few days ago and came across a

letter from a manager of a women’s prison in Christchurch in New Zealand. The letterwas thanking me for a number of Jerry Jampolsky’s books I had donated to the prisonand how she appreciated Jerry’s philosophy as it was what she was aiming to bring intothe prison. This was very heartwarming to me because when I worked in a women’sprison in the 1970s I had done the same thing with some of Joel Goldsmith’s books, which were passed on to the Prison Chaplin who told me he did not think the girlswould understand the books and had therefore taken them into his own personal li-brary.

Now this morning after reading the updates on your Prison Project I am including acheck for more books for your Prison Project.

Incidentally, in the three and a half years I worked in a prison, I was the only officerwho was not attacked by inmates. I feel this was because I was, without realizing it at thetime, actually practicing Attitudinal Healing and also Restorative Justice at the same time.

My love and blessings to you and all at MDC for the work and encouragement youbless the world with.

Thank you, Margaret for your generous donation. It’s support like this that allows usto send this type of healing support into our prisons. As an example, we recently re-ceived a letter from a woman who works in a correctional department in Arkansas. Sheis starting an A Course in Miracles study group and asked for materials. We are sendingout multiple copies of A Mini Course for Life and An Introduction to A Course in Miracles to her and we’re thrilled to think so many of the inmates will have their owncopies to hold and study.

Donations made to the Prison Project go directly to sending out books and THE HOLYENCOUNTER to those who request them.

The Prison Project of Miracle Distribution Center sendsA Course in Miracles and other Course-based items to those in prison. Through yourgenerous donations, we have been able to supply many newly-started spiritual librariesin prisons. In some cases we have been able to provide multiple copies of books so moreinmates can read about the love that is their essence. These principles are truly making adifference and quenching a thirst for truth that many in prison have found no other place.

Maria Zakich coordinates The Prison Project at MDC. You may e-mail her at [email protected]

the audience, both giver and receiver experi-ence an inspiration and love that is transfor-mational. The truth, like a sympatheticvibration, can’t help but vibrate the interiorpathways leading directly to the heart whereit ultimately resonates freely. As children we used to say the Pledge of

Allegiance before class time in school. Mir-roring that concept, KidSingers recite theKidSinger Code before each rehearsal. Itgoes like this: “We pledge to respect one another, to be trustworthy and fair. We willcare about each other and be good citizens.Above all else, we will take responsibility forour actions in our quest to build a better youand a better me.” Wouldn’t it be great if we ifwe could all make that our daily code?

All great spiritual teachings basicallyguide us to the same inner path that helps usto awaken to the truth about ourselves andour brother. Worthy of noting, the Coursenever says the world is evil or that havingwealth, power, money, and things, arewrong. But in our attainment of those things,we often wander away from our spiritual an-chor and choose to listen to the ego dictatesof greed, avarice, and blind ambition. How-ever, the Course so eloquently teaches thisis only a choice we are making, and while itmay have dire consequences in this world, itis never irreversible in the Kingdom. We willnever be eternally separated from God as aresult of this choice. We will only feel sepa-rated because of the ego-erected blocks tolove’s awareness. But by our choosing onceagain to join with God, we can get back onthe path to happiness and peace. Like theprodigal son, we can return home to thearms of our loving father.

This truly is an inside job! The Coursetells us we cannot change the world, but wecan and must change the way we view theworld. And, as we do, we will make a shift inthe world that will be miraculous. Join me incalling forth a miracle, a shift in perception. As part of our spiritual practice, whether bymeditation, prayer, or simple random acts ofkindness, with the Holy Spirit as our inner

collaborator, let us allow our disrespect tobe transformed into respect, our judgmentinto tolerance, our hatred into kindness, our cheating into fairness, and our fear into love. In so doing, may we gain accessinto the eternal, where all the treasures ofheaven will lighten our path, warm ourhearts, and restore to us the ability to seethe oneness of all humankind. May this bethe focus of our inside job.

Remembering this is often hard. Notonly hard, but impossible as long

as I am fixated on remembering I am onewith my ego mind! From our earliest days, our focus is directed toward the care andmaintenance of the personal self — itssafety, needs, and requirements for self-promotion. As weare reminded in theCourse, we have madegods of the self-con-cepts contrived as we“mature,” and do in-deed, worship at theiraltars. A wonderfulquote from A Course in Miracles — “And thusare two sons made, and both appear towalk this earth without a meeting place andno encounter. One do you perceive out-side yourself, your own beloved son. Theother rests within, His Father’s Son, withinyour brother as he is in you. Their differ-ence does not lie in how they look, norwhere they go, nor even what they do.They have a different purpose.”So naturally, our “own beloved sons”

command our respect and allegiance. Theproblem is that those “sons” can’t deliverhappiness, peace, security, or connection, although they search mightily and end-lessly for them. It is considering thebody/mind/personality as the primaryidentity and sending it off in search ofpeace of mind that guarantees it won’t befound. So why is the ego (body/mind/person-

ality) so uniformly unsuccessful at perma-nently finding what it wants, remainingendlessly on the hunt? Because the ego isfictitious — a collection of programs andconditions, mostly installed very early inlife. And this will forever be the case, so wemust look elsewhere for happiness, which

everyone in the world seeks. If the ego is not my primary identity,

although I behave as though it were, thenwhat is? Early on in our earthly life, webegin to confuse primary and secondaryidentities, lose track of reality, and thetrouble begins. Our primary identity is, of

course, life, spirit, theinvisible light and pres-ence, the extension/creation of God. Buthow do we know andrelate to that presenceon a familiar daily basiswhen I am singularly in-volved with my “ownbeloved son?” To makethat point — here is asentence: “I am goingto work.” Here, the IAM, or sense of pri-

mary identity, is ascribed to thebody/mind. But what if I say, “I am noticingthat I am working too many hours.” Nowwe have two “I AMs in the sentence andthey are not the same. To what does thefirst one refer? What’s doing the noticingthat the body/mind is overworking — thissomething that is preceding thebody/mind and able to regard it as an ob-ject, and about which it can make com-mentary? It is being, conscious awareness, the real I AM, and this I must remember IAM! This is my primary identity, able to ob-serve the ego — the secondary identity. Notice the characteristics of conscious

awareness right now as you read — limit-less, clear, empty, boundless, constant, eternal, non-judgmental, non-resistance,completely accepting, and more. Does thisnot sound like our description of God?How about the characteristics of thebody/mind? The 50 trillion cells in thebody are made of molecules and atoms, endlessly being replaced so the body itselfis never constant from one second to thenext. What about that mind, made up of

thoughts, feelings, and perceptions? Weknow, without doubt, that all of thesechange every second or less. Talk about anunstable concoction! This should be won-derful news to realize I actually am (and weall are collectively) right now this presencewith these amazing characteristics. Whowould want a small, constantly changing, unpredictable, unhappy, ineffective inven-tion that can’t deliver the goods to be ourprimary identity? We would have to be in-sane, which the Course assures us we are. So we are called upon to remember we

are always one with conscious awarenessthat is omnipresent. There is never an in-stant when it disappears. Now that’s stableand count-on-able! So we are asked to re-turn our ATTENTION from the ego to con-scious awareness, to practice being in thewitness position, watching what thebody/mind/ego is doing, thinking, andwanting. And the more we observe whatthe ego is up to, rather than closely identi-fying with the ego itself, the calmer andmore peaceful we feel. Isn’t peace of mind our stated goal?

Isn’t it more peaceful to watch what myego is doing, demanding, worrying aboutrather than actually identifying with it? TheCourse would refer to that as being “abovethe battleground.” Am I not remembering Iam one with God as I pay attention to thispeace? And as we become more conscien-tious and motivated to stay in this place ofprimary identity, observing the ego ratherthan getting so tangled up in it, we dis-cover something wonderful. More andmore we discover, to our delight, that thisconscious awareness is also the home oflove, tranquility, brilliance, light, and happiness as well as peace. And it’s allright here, constantly and safely, for ourchoosing.Lesson 132 states, “...and nowhere

does the Father end, the Son begin assomething separate from Him.” So let usdaily remember we are always one with

Though we only lived a few blocksfrom each other in New York City, I

first met Dr. Helen Schucman and Dr.William Thetford at a Spiritual Frontiers Fellowship Conference in Chicago in 1973.My first book, Learning To Die, had justbeen published and I was giving a talk atthe conference on the similarity betweenthe reports of near-death and mystical experiences. Helen and Bill attended mylecture. I was introduced to Helen more for-

merly that evening, and I was told she hadwritten an “inspirational book.” Helen was ashort, little woman withfrizzy hair and bigglasses, and I looked ather and thought, “Isn’tthat nice, the little ladywrote an inspirationalbook. I’ll bet it has some nice prayers in it.” It does! Little did I know they were talking about A Coursein Miracles. In 1974, I wrote a letter, which was

published in the newsletter of the Journalfor Transpersonal Psychology, expressing

interest in connecting with someone work-ing in the fields of psychotherapy and spir-ituality, as I was working on a dissertationon that topic. Bill saw my letter and toldHelen he thought it was a call for her tocomplete the writing of Psychotherapy,Purpose, Process and Practice so I mighthave a copy. Helen agreed. She completed the pam-

phlet in April 1975, called and said she hadsomething for me. I did not know what shewas talking about, but I agreed to meetwith her, Bill, and Dr. Ken Wapnick in Ken’slittle studio apartment on East 17th Street.

At the time, I was living inside of General Theological Seminarybetween West 20thand 21st Streets. OnSunday evening, April20, 1975, I walkedover to Ken’s place forour meeting. Helen sat on Ken’s

daybed and told meabout the Course, how

it came into existence, and how it affectedthose in the room. I carried the manuscriptof the Psychotherapy Pamphlet home that

evening, thinking that probably the mostimportant thing which would ever happento me had just happened. I had no ideawhat it was, though. After that, Ken came to visit me at

General Theological, and I began to sponsor lectures with Ken in New YorkCity, Orange, and Westchester counties.Helen, in turn, became something of amother figure and counselor in times oftrouble. It seemed I was frequently in trou-ble in my relationships with women. That same April, an incident regarding

forgiveness occurred in which Helen wasvery helpful. I had broken off a relationshipwith a woman I had been dating. The ladyin question got very angry. She startedcalling at 2 a.m. just to wake me up andannoy me. It got to the point, where inorder to get any sleep, I had to take thephone off the hook before going to bed. She came unannounced to General

Theological, and when the guard at thedoor told her I was not in, she picked acup of coffee up off of his desk and threwit on him. One day as I was leaving my office/apartment with another lady, wefound this woman waiting outside my doorand she physically attacked my friend. Fortunately, I was able to restrain her. I threw my car keys to my friend and sheran ahead and locked herself in my car. After that, a lawyer friend suggested mygetting a restraining “Order of Protection”against her, but I didn’t want to do that. I felt tremendous guilt over having en-

tered this relationship and did not knowhow to resolve it. I was carrying such aweight of guilt that I went to see Helen.Helen suggested I leave the phone on thehook, and the next time she called I shouldtalk to her in a reasonable and loving man-ner. I should not argue or disagree withher. I was just to let her be who she wasand let her “talk it out,” for as long as she

isten. But first choose what you want tolisten to. Then silence the rest

without any argument.”Having been profoundly deaf for many

years now, my appreciation of the featuresof high-tech hearing aids has shifted. Atone time, I was very hopeful technologywould one day help me, and I took interestin all of the exciting new features thatwould possibly help me to hear moreclearly. The manufac-turers and dealers op-timistically promisedmany things, but myability to hear otherswhen they were talk-ing to me was not im-proved, and I wasdisappointed. No mat-ter the technology, myability to discriminatespeech in order to un-derstand what is beingsaid is still very poor, and I rely on lip read-ing. Now I have come

full circle. I think thegreatest feature of anyhearing aids, the one I appreciate the most,is the off switch. I have found that beingdeaf and being able to have complete quietat any time, in any situation, is a unique, rare gift. Ironically, as I tried to fill quietwith noise for many years, the quiet is alsowhat allows me to hear what is most im-portant, the voice of Love within me, andwithin you.I hope we will all one day find that our

spiritual paths are not dissimilar, despitethe names by which we call our paths, orthe ways in which we come to them — ourgoal, always, is to quiet the chatter of ourminds so we can hear the whisper ofpeace, the soft voice of love, the tender-ness within the wonderful moment we are

in. This is why I love A Course in Miraclesso much. Our goal is to be able to learn todiscriminate what we are hearing, andsometimes to do so we have to, strangely— stop listening to one thing so we cantruly hear the other. We have to stop listen-ing to the chatter of fear so we can hear in-stead the voice of calm compassion andgentleness within us. Left on its own, with-out training or a prod in the right direction, our minds can become loud, erratic, and

frantic. Sometimes, ourmind-chatter is non-stop. It can be like try-ing to write a beautifulsonnet in the midst ofa war zone. We canbecome lost, or at theminimum, greatly dis-tracted from the peacewithin us.Today in your study

of the Course chooseto not be distracted,“to stop listening tothe chatter and dis-tractions so you canhear your Inner Wis-dom.” Imagine yourmind has, like my hear-

ing aids, an off switch. Listening to yourInner Wisdom can be tough when there isa lot going on that seems important, whenit seems you must worry about this or that, and about all the many problems you maysee. Today, try and remember you make allof this up — every one of your worries, thoughts, or fear-based concerns are onlythoughts you have made up in your mind. They are not as all-important as you havemade them up to be. I suggest all of thisbecause this helps me, because if I remindmyself I am the author of the worry, theanger, and fear in my mind, then I canbegin to look past it all to what is trulywithin me, beneath and beyond all the distractions. I can begin to erase them, to

rewrite them. This is the greatest challengeon my spiritual path: to turn it all off, and todo so consistently. My task as a student ofthe Course is as simple as this: “Let lovecall me back to where I was before, andwill be again and never left.”As I write these words, I realize my

whole path is contained in this one sen-tence; it is one directive, one wish, onegoal. It takes great effort to be consistent, and a profound willingness to learn thiseach and every day. I am still learning. Butthe little moments of progress, of success, are not little at all to me — they are whathave been most important in my life andgive me a glimpse of what is possible andwho I am, who I can be. I feel this as I writein this moment. Blessed.I feel this so intently and increasingly

consistently, and yet there are still times Ibecome frustrated with myself, still fallprey to the meaningless chatter that some-how takes its precedent over gentlenessand a peaceful focus. Sometimes, I canlook back and feel like I have wasted anhour, or even longer periods, lost in thechatter. But this morning, from the quietwithin, I truly understand what the Coursesays about time is true: “Nothing is everlost but time, which in the end is meaning-less. For it is but a little hindrance to eter-nity, quite meaningless...” (T-26.V.2:1) Whilehere in this world where time does feel sovery real to so many, may we each learn touse time well, to learn more each dayabout love.

you are making the effort; whether you area self-motivated learner. I know some of you are already feeling

guilty, right? You’re wondering if you areputting in enough effort. You’d like to get anote from your Teacher saying you’re aself-motivated learner, right? Rest assuredthe note has been sent, and your little willingness has been noticed. We are notasked to do much for our awakening; weare simply asked toturn in its direction —to become aware ofour compromises topeace, our unforgiv-ing thoughts, and nolonger choose to dwellin them. Even thoughwe may walk through the valley of theshadow of death, we need not fear, forGod is with us.

“God hides nothing from His Son,even though His Son would hide himself.Yet the Son of God cannot hide his glory, for God wills him to be glorious, andgave him the light that shines in him. Youwill never lose your way, for God leadsyou. When you wander, you but under-take a journey that is not real. The darkcompanions, the dark way, are all illu-sions. Turn toward the light, for the littlespark in you is part of a Light so greatthat it can sweep you out of all darknessforever.” (T-11.III.5)

Are you asking questions? “To learnthis course requires willingness to questionevery value that you hold. Not one can bekept hidden and obscure but it will jeop-ardize your learning.” (T-24.Intro.2)I’ve heard Course students say they do

ask questions, but they don’t get answers. This is usually because they have an expectation of what they want the answerto be. If we “hear” something that doesn’tfit into our expectation, then we don’t thinkwe have received an answer. As theCourse says, “All are called but few chooseto listen.”On the other hand, children in school

are much like a blank slate; they don’t havea lot of blocks to learning. If they are told alesson by their teacher, they believe him orher, and learning occurs. It has been said

the most fertile time for learning occurs inthose early years of life and can set thestage for a child’s interest or lack of inter-est in learning. Every child asks questions. Sometimes

it can be tedious, but it can also be excitingif we realize it is our opportunity to learn aswell. I remember when Jeffrey was little andsitting in his car seat in the backseat. As Idrove, he would ask me all sorts of ques-tions about the things he saw and thewords on signs. He made me see things Ihad never noticed before, and my world

became more interest-ing and full because ofthe questions he posed. We need to turn to theHoly Spirit with ourquestions, even whenwe think we know, because he can show us

a deeper meaning and understanding thatnot only makes life easier but makes itmore exciting.

“Little children recognize that they donot understand what they perceive, andso they ask what it means. Do not makethe mistake of believing that you under-stand what you perceive, for its meaningis lost to you. Yet the Holy Spirit hassaved its meaning for you, and if you willlet Him interpret it, He will restore to youwhat you have thrown away. Yet whileyou think you know its meaning, you willsee no need to ask it of Him.” (T-11.VIII.2)

Are you helping others? A Course inMiracles tells us, “Whenever two Sons ofGod meet, they are given another chanceat salvation. Do not leave anyone withoutgiving salvation to him and receiving ityourself.” (T-8.III.4) This is a major part of theCourse’s curriculum because the Course isteaching you who you really are and thatyou cannot find yourself without yourbrother. There are so many passages thatreflect this truth, and the following is a particularly powerful one:

“The goal of the curriculum, regard-less of the teacher you choose, is ‘Knowthyself.’ There is nothing else to seek.Everyone is looking for himself and forthe power and glory he thinks he haslost. Whenever you are with anyone, youhave another opportunity to find them.Your power and glory are in him becausethey are yours. The ego tries to find them

in yourself alone, because it does notknow where to look. The Holy Spiritteaches you that if you look only at your-self you cannot find yourself, becausethat is not what you are.” (T-8.III.5)

Kids are encouraged to help each otherin class because by doing so it reinforceswhat they have learned. The first time I wasasked to help my fellow students was inkindergarten. The teacher gave me athreaded sewing needle and had me sewon buttons for the two eyes of each stu-dent’s bunny poster. All these years later, Ican still feel the joy of being helpful. Everytime you have reached out to another, Iknow you have felt the same reward. It’snot dependent on whether or not they respond with great appreciation or not. As a matter of fact, I can’t remember onestudents’ reaction to my gesture of help, but the joy was not about thanks, it wasabout seeing I was needed and purposeful. We can all be purposeful. Don’t dimin-

ish your extensions of love or service be-cause it doesn’t look as grand as another. As the Course tells us, all expressions oflove are maximal. A good example is the Biblical story of

the widow’s mite. The widow who had solittle wanted to tithe to Jesus when he wasteaching in the Temple of Jerusalem and soshe gave a mite, which was a very meagersum (it translated to be worth about sixminutes of an average daily wage). Jesussays to his disciples that she gave thegreatest gift, for the small gift meant moreto her than the extravagant gifts meant tothe rich. Don’t diminish your gifts of serv-ice and support, but see each as an exten-sion of love whose value cannot bequantified.

Are we communicating with Godwhen we need help? “God is your safetyin every circumstance. His Voice speaksfor Him in all situations and in every aspectof all situations, telling you exactly what todo to call upon His strength and His protection.” (Lesson 47) Why would we notturn to God for help with this type of guarantee? Why would we want to do anything without His help?As Jeffrey enters higher levels of

science and math, he is encouraged to askfor help and show his work, especiallywhen solving chemical equations andmathematical theorems. His teachers

promote this because then they can seewhere students are making errors, andquickly identify the problem and correct it,so the students can easily continue ontheir path of learning. Many times it’s asimple concept mistake, but if studentsdon’t show their work, they can feel over-whelmed and think they can’t do this typeof problem solving at all. When Jeff has asked for help from his

teacher, which he does often (becausemom and dad can’t help him anymore withthis advanced stuff)! He will usually tell meit was an easy fix because his teacher couldsee where his thinking might be faulty andintroduce a correction. This is much thesame way the Holy Spirit can help us withour faulty thinking, as we read in theCourse...

“The Holy Spirit asks of you but this;bring to Him every secret you havelocked away from Him. Open every doorto Him, and bid Him enter the darknessand lighten it away. At your request Heenters gladly. He brings the light to dark-ness if you make the darkness open toHim. But what you hide He cannot lookupon. He sees for you, and unless youlook with Him He cannot see. The visionof Christ is not for Him alone, but for Himwith you. Bring, therefore, all your darkand secret thoughts to Him, and lookupon them with Him. He holds the light, and you the darkness. They cannot coexist when both of you together lookon them.” (T-14.VII.6)

The Course tells us that salvation is nothard, it’s just very different than what weare used to. As children we are taught tobecome self-sufficient, but would we evertell a child he or she doesn’t need food, water, shelter or any of the things vital totheir existence? Our communication withGod is that integral to the awareness of ourreal existence; we could not live without it.Therefore, the communication is alwaysgoing on, but it’s just one-sided — meaningGod is always communicating with us, butwe are not experiencing it. Our desire tohold onto our anger, judgments, or right-ness is causing us to feel disconnectedfrom His Help. We need to see how vital itis for us to turn to God not just when weneed help, but every moment of the day.We have built up so much resistance to thetruth that we now must develop the habit

of joining our minds with God. Children are naturally excited about

growing up and learning. I remember play-ing school before I was old enough to goto school, and I bet you did too. I havenever really had a problem getting Jeffreyto go to school be-cause he wanted tolearn. Even when heexperienced somechallenges in school,he never let them stophim from seeing thebigger picture of what school could offer. This is much like what the Course is offering us as we continue our “higher” education. We are asked to lift our visionfrom the fearful fray of the world and moveabove the battleground where we can seewith more clarity the benefit of our healing. The Course tells us to teach is to learn.

Therefore, we learn through the demon-stration and actions of our life. If we are living a life dedicated to learning the truthof our existence, questioning the limita-tions of the world, helping each other, and

opening our hearts to the answers of theinfinite, life becomes an exciting adventureof endless possibilities. At the end of every commencement

speech, students are told of their limitlesspotential and how a future of success is

within their reach. Thesame is true for us rightnow. We have neverlost our power or placein the Mind of God, butit’s up to us when wewill experience it. Your

student of the month note has been sent;you just need to open it up and be willingto believe it’s meant for you!

“Forget not once this journey isbegun the end is certain. Doubt alongthe way will come and go and go tocome again. Yet is the ending sure. Noone can fail to do what God appointedhim to do. When you forget, rememberthat you walk with Him and with HisWord upon your heart. Who could despair when hope like this is his?”(M-Epilogue)

It’s amazing the smiles wesee on peoples’ faces whenthey look at their own child-hood photos. They remembertheir innocence, and if theycan remember their own perhaps they can think thatway about people whotempt them to anger. Our innocence, no matterwhat we have done, cannever be lost. It’s time for usto awaken to the truth thatwe all are for each other, sowe invite you to send us your childhood photo (around the age of 5 or 6, but younger is okay, too) so we can post it on our Wall of Innocence on MDC’s website at

each other for our misperceptions. We arefriends to this day. She still calls two orthree times a year and always on my birth-day. Each time she says, “I know you’rebusy,” and she never stays on the phonefor more than a few minutes. It’s been 40years since that incident. She called re-cently, to tell me of some of her problems.I found myself calling her “dear,” and reas-suring her things would be okay. All of thissimply proves once again that, “The holiestof all the spots on earth is where an an-cient hatred has become a present love.”(T-26.IX.6:1)

“The special relationship will remain, not as a source of pain and guilt, but as asource of joy and freedom.” (T-18.II.6:7)For the five years I knew her, Helen

would time and again help me find my waythrough an amazing maze of special relationships we call romance. I am forevergrateful for her teaching me that “forgive-ness lies in communication.” If we trulyknew each other as children of God, in theinnocence of who we really are, therewould be no division, no discord, no grievances, no guilt, and no pain.
