Electronics Supply & Manufacturing-China, May 2010

Edwin Kwong, Senior Vice President of Fujitsu Semiconductor Asia, took an interview with Electronics Supply &Manufacturing-China, sharing his views on market trends in 2010.

English Version:

The Direction of Future Product Development Depends on the Ecological Environment, Rather Than Traditional TechnicalFactors

With the consumer market rebounding this year, electronic products manufacturers have once again become active indevelopment activities in the key target application markets; namely, smart phones, LCD TV, LED lighting, renewableenergy, the netbook/smart book, Tablet PC, 3G/LTE terminal and infrastructure, set-top box, e-book, automotiveinfotainment system, automotive safety system, rail transport, video surveillance and medical electronics. However, asthe consumer pockets are shrinking, the key success factor of this year depends on whether manufacturers are able todevelop products that meet consumer expectations. So what do consumers really want? We believe that the uniqueperspective of Edwin Kwong, senior vice president of Fujitsu Semiconductor Asia, can enlighten us in this matter.

Q: What are your exclusive insights about the development trends of Fujitsu Semiconductor's key target market thisyear?

Kwong: I grouped the above applications into 4 categories, automotive, communication, the digital consumer andecology. The result was very interesting because, coincidentally, these applications coincide with the focus markets ofFujitsu Semiconductor for 2010.

At first glance these 4 segments look unrelated, but upon deeper analysis they in fact are rather inter-related. In regardsto the automobile sector, today, hybrid and electric cars are a hot topic in the market because of global warmingconcerns and the fear of energy shortage. From the manufacturer point of view, the future product research direction isnow driven from an ecological standpoint instead of traditional technology dimensions. For semiconductor companiestoo, the making of "green" cars will require the need to adopt new approaches in designs. In addition to developing highlyreliable products as Fujitsu Semiconductor has long been practicing, semiconductor companies will have to develop"green" products with low power dissipation, low emission, and environment friendly material.

From the consumer point of view, a car is more than a mechanical box for the sole purpose of moving people from point Ato B. The car's interior dashboard is more similar to that of an airplane's cockpit, where the driver requires and isprovided with the most up-to-date information from both the interior and exterior of the vehicle. For passengers, theywant more choices for entertainment, including TV, movies, games, and the internet. These applications require soundtelecommunication and network systems whereby vast information could be transmitted swiftly when the car is in motion. Also, good cross-platform inter-connectivity capabilities are needed so that various types of digital consumer productsincluding but not limited to MID, PMP, E-books, headsets, remote controls could be connected to the infotainment system.

Q: How will these trends affect the current market demand and supply chain?

Kwong: As I discussed, the inter-relatedness and fusion of applications in a product is having a profound impact

Page 10: If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> - fujitsu.com SEMICONDUCTOR LIMITED ASI… · If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> FUJITSU SEMICONDUCTOR Limited Asia

especially on the replacement market. For instance, usually a first time car buyer's first constraint is budget. However, when purchasing the second car years later, one's financial position should be better. Most consumers in this case arelooking for a better car not necessarily solely based on price. For a winning product to be loved by consumers, other thanjust the basic functions, it should offer the best combination of the above factors. Consumers will look for cars with soundreliability and safety, low energy consumption, fancy infotainment system, and rear system entertainment system, toname a few.

Please note that I do not mean we just have to do more. Doing more, often times is misinterpreted as merely packingeverything inside the vehicle. Consequently the eco-friendly factor in such a strategy would be difficult to achieve.Rather, it is doing better or doing so with innovation that counts. Doing better means how to optimize and how to combinevarious requirements into the product, and how to improve the quality and reliability of the product.

Q: What market challenges may Chinese manufacturers need to face?

Kwong: China manufacturers have been doing an excellent job in BOM (bill of material) management and responding tothe market window. This cost sensitive business will always exist for a long time because there is always a low endmarket seeking lower prices. In the meantime, I also observed that many China manufacturers are not satisfied withbeing pegged merely as low cost manufacturers making low quality "me-too" products. They wish to improve their productpositioning or create their own brands. They understand well that they have to challenge themselves on how to combineand to optimize these market challenges into their product, especially from an ecology, safety and security perspective. These terminologies might be new to some China manufacturers, and it is inevitable that they would have to go through asteep learning curve and face the associated risks. On the other hand, the reward would be profound because thesuccess would allow them to jump into a new tier of competition, i.e., from EMS (electronic manufacturing services), asan ODM (original design manufacturer) to an OBM (original brand manufacturer).

Q: What are the key difficulties that Chinese manufacturers may need to address?

Kwong: Thanks to the fast development in the areas of communication and transportation, the world, as some havedescribed, has become "flat". People, products, technology, information and even factories are much more mobile. Assuch "hardware" can be easily "transferred" to other regions. China manufacturers have to develop the "software" towhere it is not easily "copied".

Secondly, there are silos in various forms developed everywhere; one of which is the "standard" silo. Different countrieswould put up different standards for various reasons: security, safety, quality, regulation, etc. This is inevitable becausethe government needs to regulate the products sold in the market. However, sometimes, these standards might become abarrier of entry, especially in areas where the standards are loosely defined. As such, in some cases it becomes verychallenging for China manufacturers to master such tacit knowledge of the industry. Furthermore, there is an increasingtrend that such tacit knowledge is embedded in software rather than hardware, and that a new investment portfolio wouldbe needed. For instance, we see that investment in the engineering development environment will carry a higherweightage than development of machineries; the ratio of software engineers to hardware engineers will see afundamental change, and the flow of product development as well as the knowledge management system will also gothrough a major revamp. This shift would result in a change in the competition frontier from product cost to IP (intelligentproperty) performance.

Q: What exclusive solutions will Fujitsu Semiconductor provide?

Kwong: Fujitsu Semiconductor has been in Asia for years sharing its advanced products and solution know-howdeveloped worldwide. We also continue to provide on-site support to help our clients launch their products within a shorttime.

However, acting only as a solution based semiconductor company like Fujitsu Semiconductor is not enough. We needlocal products and solutions, not simply hardware or a bundle of software, but a seamless integration between these two, offering an optimized platform delivering today's requirements while being prepared for future enhancement.

To achieve this challenging goal, we have listened to the VOC (voice of customer) about the feedback to our productsand solutions and have made this one of our highest priorities. From meetings with our clients, we have learned what hasto be improved, and what would be needed for the future. We have since refined these ideas, and put them down into aseries of product and solution road maps.

In addition, the China market needs many low-cost solutions to adapt to the application of local popular-type cars, forwhich there is a huge demand. We will work with local partners to promote low-cost applications of automatic auto airconditioners such as the 8-bit MB95F168 with LCD display, the 8-bit MCU MB95F176 with LCD display and the stepmotor driver for car dashboards with two or three headers and single-chip MCU solution supporting MP3/WMA/AAC/OGG

Electronic Engineering Times-China, June 2010

Alex Peng, Marketing Assistant Manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai) Co Ltd, responding to ElectronicEngineering Times-China, sharing his views on trends in motor field and introducing Fujitsu Semiconductor's uniquetechnology and products in motor drive and control.

English Version:

Motor Development Trend and Semiconductor Solutions

PENG Tao

Product Manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai) Co., Ltd

As for the current development trend of the motor market, we view the characteristics as follows:

1. DC Brushlessness, i.e. the motor has the DC drive power supply without a commutating brush, thus reducingelectromagnetic interference and friction loss produced by the brush;

2. Direct Motor Drive, i.e. the motor is connected directly with motion devices to omit the gear box, leather belt and otherconnection mechanisms, thus realizing applications of the high speed motor as well as the low speed and great torquemotor.

3. Speed Adjustment with Inverter Motor, i.e. the motor speed adjustment is shifted from fixed frequency to the invertermotor to reduce the switch loss and improve the system efficiency;

4. Control Intelligence, i.e. the motor is shifted from electromechanical control to intelligent electric control to provide highaccuracy, complex control and servo control etc.

The motor application markets on which Fujitsu Semiconductor is currently focusing mainly include the consumerelectronic and the industrial sectors. The products involved are primarily for the motor controller application. Thesegamentation of motor controller requirements provides various microcontrollers, motor control algorithms and referencesolutions. Hence the customers' motor control requirements for relative markets are fulfilled.

In order to simplify the customers' control over the motor, Fujitsu has integrated special motor control modules into itsmicrocontrollers of 8 bits, 16bits and 32 bits. For example, the multifunctional pulse generator (MPG) module integratedinto the 8-bit machine can provide automatically 6 lines of PWM drive waveforms in accordance with the positionfeedback signal, thus realizing BLDC motor control easily. In addition, dead-time can be set for the multifunctional timer(MFT) integrated into the 32-bit microcontroller, which has functions of closing compulsorily the output drive andassociating the high speed ADC sampling interruption. In this way, the drive waveform and protection functions of 180degrees inverter motor control are simplified.

While promoting microcontroller products, the Application and Development Team of Fujitsu also provides the

Page 12: If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> - fujitsu.com SEMICONDUCTOR LIMITED ASI… · If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> FUJITSU SEMICONDUCTOR Limited Asia

corresponding motor control solutions. For example, regarding the software algorithm and the reference design scheme, the Team can provide customers with space vector control applied to the AC induction motor, 120° DC inverter motorcontrol applied to the DC brushless motor, and 180 degrees DC inverter motor control applied to the DC brushless motoror the permanent-magnet synchronous motor.

With the global temperature rising, nations are advocating the low carbon economy, energy saving and environmentalprotection. Hence the improvement of motor efficiency and reduction of motor energy consumption will become the futuretrend of motor control. The DC brushless motor drive and DC inverter motor control will dominate the development ofmotor controller. As the motor controller, the core processor will also evolve to be of high calculation processing speed, high integration level and high reliability.

Auto electronics: In the middle and high end automotive electronic market, the need for 16 and 32 bit MCUs isincreasing. We will focus on promoting the new generation 16FX 16 bit MCU series. These units feature 56MHz mainfrequency, multi-channel CAN/LIN bus and can provide online analysis and simulation. We will also be highlighting ournew generation of MB91460 32 bit MCU series, all of which support Automotive Open System Architecture (AUTOSAR)standards to help customers to improve global competitiveness.

Fujitsu 32-bit microcontroller (MB91F490 private-core products of the FR60 series) can satisfy aforesaid demandsmarvelously due to its processing speed up to 80MPIS, fine quality, high reliability (for example, excellent EMCperformance and a wide temperature range) and the capability to integrate the abundant peripherals (for example, thespecial motor control module, high speed ADC, a variety of communication interfaces and high-performance analogydevices etc. integrated in MCU). Meanwhile, the China Application and Development Team of Fujitsu Semiconductor inAsia-Pacific Region has been dedicated to the motor control algorithm since 1998 and provided customers with theproven space vector control algorithm, 120 degrees DC inverter motor algorithm (supporting modes with the Hall sensorand without a sensor) and 180 degrees DC inverter motorcontrol algorithm in tandem.

A few days ago, Fujitsu Microelectronics concentrated on the display of its latest 8-bit and 32-bit MCU (Micro ControlUnits) products at the IIC-China 2010 Conference & Exhibition. PENG Tao, Senior Product Engineer from the MarketingDepartment of Fujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.(the Company) introduced the Company's two new products:MB95F330H and MB91F492 to EDN China.

MB95F330H series (8-bit MCU), mainly focusing on the motor control market, can support multi-channel DC motorcontrol, brushless DC motor control or 120 degrees inverter motor control. With the evaluation board and motor controlsoftware drive document, MB95F330H series simplify the customer's development of motor control. PENG Tao indicatedthat having engaged in the MCU field for over three decades, Fujitsu has accumulated abundant experience in the controlof AC motor, DC motor, brushless DC motor and stepping motor driver. MB95F330H series 8-bit MCUs are configuredwith Fujitsu's F2MC-8FX CPU core. The device has added the brushless DC motor control function, and may deliver theoptimal three-phase waveform output. With this device equipped, the brushless DC motor may adapt to an extensiverange of products from the dishwasher water pump motor to the PC cooling fan. MB95F330H has embedded the highperformance flash memory for 100,000 times of erasing/writing. During the program execution, the data may be rewrittenfor many times, and the data may be stored for 20 years. In addition, the device has added the flash memory encryptionfunction that can prevent any external programs from accidentally reading the data, avoiding the leakage of thecustomer's software asset.

MB95F330H also support the communication function of various multi-functional timers, so it can not only act as the mainMicro Control Unit, but also function as Sub-Micro Control Unit when the existing configured functions of the system areinadequate. Additionally, as a single-strand on-chip debug module is built in the new device, the customer debuggingprogram only occupies one pin of the MCU and may facilitate the smooth development of products. Because this devicecarries the CR oscillator circuit providing 2% of accuracy, the optimal power consumption can be delivered by register'ssetting of the output frequency. The combination of the built-in voltage detection circuit and the monitor timer circuitallows the customer to lower the system costs without addition of the external oscillator and the reset IC in theapplication and design stage.

PENG Tao emphasized that, compared with the previous 8-bit MCUs, MB95F330H series have expanded more pins. Thisyear the products launched in the market include 32-pin, 48-pin, 64-pin, and 80-pin, which can support LCD driver andmotor control and other applications more extensively. The MB95F330H products are expected to enter mass productionfrom June of this year.

Among the 32-bit MCU product line, MB91F492 is the Fujitsu's latest launched product. The fast digital to analogconversion of both the motor control module and the related motor control has been built in the chip, which is applicableto 180 degrees DC variable frequency air conditioning control and industrial variable frequency control.

According to the introduction of PENG Tao, with the adoption of Fujitsu's CPU core FR60, MB91F492 are compatiblewith FR* series CPU. This device features operating frequency of 50 MHz (multiple PLL clock), loading/storagearchitecture, and level 5 pipe. Abundant timers built in this device include 2-channel 16-bit overload timer, 1 unit timinggenerator, 4-channel 8/16-bit PPG timer, 1 unit multi-functional timer, 2-channel time base timer, and 1-channel 8/16-bitbidirectional counter. MB91F492 provides 3 unit multifunctional serial interface, and has asynchronous, clocksynchronization communication and optional UART/I2C mode. Internally, this device integrates 8/10-bit A/DC, including4-channel unit and 8-channel unit. In this way, the paralleled processing of tasks and associated software interruptioncan be fulfilled. The device's maximum conversion time is only 1.2μs at the 44 MHz peripheral clock.

PENG Tao said, through the algorithm that the MFT (multifunction time) module integrates the inverter driver, MB91F492lowers the design threshold greatly compared with the DSP+MCU mode. In addition, the new device embraces the5-channel DMA controller, wildcard register, low-voltage interruption/resetting, and flash memory security function. Thisdevice is configured with 49 GPIO ports representing both 256K Flash and 12K RAM. Furthermore, MB91F490 cansupport the range from 2.4 to 5.5 V while some DSPs or 32-bit MCUs support 1.8 to 3.6 V. According to PENG Tao, thisoffers more general external interface voltage to electrical home appliances or industrial control equipment, and deliversbetter performance in both EMC and EMI. It is reported that Fujitsu is planning to adopt Cortex-M3 core to develop new32-bit MCUs. In PENG's opinion, ARM offers good low power consumption performance by simplifying the cores. BothARM core and Fujitsu core are developed based on C language, and Fujitsu's development tools also support the thirdparty's compiler in general use. There is no problem for customers to conduct the design and transplanting between suchtwo.

Electronic Engineering & Product World, May 2010

Bu Yangchun, Product Manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai) Co Ltd, took an interview with ElectronicEngineering & Product World, sharing his views on design trends and development of digital STB platform.

English Version:

A Lively Discussion about the Future of the Set-top Box

Convergence of the Three Networks

Bu Yangchun, DAV product manager at Fujitsu Microelectronics, has said that the concept of the convergence of thethree networks is a strategic plan initiated by the Chinese government for the future development of the BISDN,telecommunication network and internet. Its ultimate aim is to provide more advanced services to customers. As theconvergence of the three networks evolves, it will raise all kinds of new requirements regarding the customer's networkaccess and business distribution. This brings new challenges to the development of the customer terminal device digitalset-top box, but also brings new opportunities. Upgrades and updates of digital set-top box products will be morefrequent. Customers will have more and more requirements for differentiation of digital set-top box products. This will helpset-top box suppliers who can provide quick local support to gain early business opportunities.

HD set-top box

As digital TV evolves, business based on digital TV will also grow rapidly. Consequently there is already an increasingnumber of HD programs on the market. In order to properly support the increasing business and HD programs, in additionto being able to meet a variety of requirements in the future, Bu Yangchun believes that apart from meeting currentfunction requirements, digital set-top boxes should also have good scalability, both in terms of hardware and software. There are many types of USB devices, and the interfaces are all standard for general purpose. Therefore, if the digitalset-top box can support two or more USB interfaces, it will provide better scalability. For HD program transmission, because HD programs take up a lot of bandwidth, support for video codec mode (e.g. H.264 and the Chinese standardAVS) with a high compression rate has also become a top concern when designing digital set-top boxes.

Brand-new 3D TV

Some companies are already trying to produce 3D TVs and the corresponding programs, although they are still in theearly stages. Bu Yangchun noted that the switch from traditional 2D TV to 3D TV is a very complex procedure - more sothan switching from standard definition to high definition. Not only is there the change in the receiving terminal, there isalso the required changes in videotaping, editing, codes storage, network transmission and receiving. Fujitsu believesthat 3D is the future development trend and has been investing in 3D technology R&D for quite some time; particularly inthe areas where Fujitsu has clear advantages; namely, video codec front-end solution and terminal receiving decode

solution.

Explore the future

Apart from the basic hardware module, OEMs are also looking for support for Skype, internet browsers, Adobe FlashPlayer, DLNA, web widgets, audio post processing and more value added applications. Fujitsu has always consideredthat there are three key technical requirements for core processing chips, which should also be considered as priority infuture chip designing, Bu Yangchun said.

For the car manufactures in China, the more and more demand for the in-vehicle multimedia information system drivesthem to develop and manufacture such systems, which makes the manufactures might provide the electronics systemwith high add-value. Therefore, it provides excellent opportunity for the development of the manufactures and helps themto achieve market leadership.

1. Open chip architecture and operation system enables digital set-top boxes to meet an increasing number of applicationrequirements and lowers the entry threshold for application developers and suppliers. It can also gradually weed outexpensive private middleware systems.

2. Lowering the power consumption can improve the competitive edge for digital set-top box products. Although theprocessing capabilities of the digital set-top box is increasing, their core function is not that of a PC. Using low powerspecial embedded CPUs, like ARM, can significantly lower the power consumption of the digital set-top box, making themmuch more environmentally friendly.

3. Internet content format support. Digital set-top boxes supporting internet content format is not to replace the PC, rathermany internet programs or application content are more suitable for watching and using on TV, e.g. Flash Video and MKV.

Energy-Saving/Intelligent Vehicles Rule the Roost and Automobile Electronics Display the Prowess 2010/5 LIN Wanqing

In the global context of economic recovery, electric vehicles have been advocated vigorously with an emphasis bygovernments of various countries who have been aware of the fact that the traditional fuel transport facilities are themain mobile pollution source currently. The intelligent vehicles, likewise, have been in soaring demand due to theiradvantages in security, comfort and entertainment. Professionals in different parts of supply chain will surely beenattracted to plunge into the circle. The increasing demand of intelligent vehicles is expected to become the engine forongoing growth of the automobile electronics industry.

In 2010, Taipei Int'l Auto Parts and Accessories Show, namely, Taipei International Automobile Electronics Show washeld in Nangang Exhibition Hall of Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC). Following the theme on "Green Car, EnergyConservation" in 2009, this year's "Moving Green, Driving Eco" continued the emphasis on the promotion of green andenvironmental protection activities. For the first time, the Show added the zone for Hybrid Electric Vehicle /ElectricVehicle (HEV/EV) Components and followed suit of the previous year to set up a Green Power online display zone.showcasing products with unique features of Two Lowered, Two High and One Lightweight, i.e., the products displayedboast the features of lowered gas consumption, lowered carbon dioxide emission, higher engine performance, higherassembly easiness and lightweight.

Meanwhile, the New Product Introduction Conference has planned a session on the theme of Green Car and ElectricVehicle Application Products. The shown high-power light diode LED fog light developed by Giantlight Traffic SuppliesInstrument Co., Ltd has the unique single LED design, boasting low power consumption, longevity, minimal cost, meetingthe energy-saving requirements of electric vehicles. Besidess, batteries, considered as the heart of an electric car, aresignificant issues in terms of their safety and power management performances. The exhibition also showcased STLTech's special battery management system that enables users to monitor battery life, predict time of usage, dynamicmileage via a handheld wireless controller. Electric vehicles have become the hottest topic in the auto industry recentlyunder the influence of issues such as energy safety, environmental protection and soaring crude oil prices globally. Theglobal market demand for Hybrid Electric Vehicles will reach 4 million units by 2015 according to Frost & Sullivan. Theauto plants all over the world are vigorously involved in the research and development of Electric Vehicles. What's more,US President Barack Obama has indicated that one million Electric Vehicles are expected to be on US roads by 2015.The Germans also plan to have one million Electric Vehicles on the roads by 2020. All will notice that the theme of thisexhibition keeps abreast of the global trend in the area of energy vehicles.

Electric Vehicle Prevails; GM/ Mitsubishi Are in Urge Preparation

The energy-saving trend is highlighted by the electric vehicles. In 2010 Taipei International Automotive ElectronicsForum, GM North America and Mitsubishi of Japan both set up electric vehicles as the mission for future development. The brands of GM - Chevrolet and Opel electric vehicles (Volt and Ampera) will be mass-produced officially in 2010 and2011 respectively. Mitsubishi, meanwhile, is aggressively establishing more comprehensive charging Infrastructure toaccelerate the popularity of electric vehicles.

Photo1 George P. Hansen, Director of General Motors Asia-Pacific Co., Ltd. revealed that the main suppliers of keycomponents for GM electric vehicles are Taiwan manufacturers, which indicated that the electric vehicle technology inTaiwan has developed into a considerable scale.

George P. Hansen, Director of General Motors Asia-Pacific Co., Ltd. (Photo 1) expressed that more suppliers of keycomponents are required to be involved so as to elevate the performance of component, lower the cost and minimize theweight and size of lithium battery in view of the stubbornly high price of Lithium Battery electric vehicles currently. Thebrands of GM - Chevrolet and Opel electric vehicles (Volt and Ampera) will be mass-produced officially in 2010 and 2011respectively.

MiEV, the electric vehicle developed by Mitsubishi Motors was launched in July, 2009. Imahori Toshihiko, Manager ofElectric Vehicle Business Office, Electric Vehicle Business Promotion Department, Mitsubishi Motors pointed out thatlithium battery electric vehicle discharged only 50 grams carbon dioxides per kilometer, an amount much lower than 200grams discharged by traditional gas vehicles, 100 grams by fuel battery vehicles. Besidess, the torsion of MiEV hasbeen as high as 180Nm, two times higher than that of gas vehicles so as to elevate the acceleration of 1.5 seconds for0~80 kilometers per hour.

In order to accelerate the popularity of electric vehicles, Mitsubishi is planning electric vehicle towns in Japan. Up till now, about eleven cities have been set as participants in the electric vehicle trials as an important part of early needscreation, charging infrastructure maintenance and public education. It is expected that cities selected for electric vehicletowns will be decided finally before 2013. In addition, Imahori mentioned that Mitsubishi had established 150 chargingstations around shopping malls, convenience stores, parking plots and highway rest areas, etc in Japan, with acontinuous increasing trend in the future which will promote the maturity of the electric vehicle market. In March 2010,Japan CHAdeMO Association was officially founded. The members of the Association mainly include electric vehiclemanufacturers such as Mitsubishi, Toyota, Nissan and Subaru as well as Tokyo Electric Power, who are dedicated to thepromotion of electric vehicle charging standardization and publicity of charging infrastructure. Imahori talked in a candidway that the household charging may also cover the shortage of charging infrastructure in the early stage since theelectric vehicle market is still in the bud with immature charging infrastructure and technology.

Hansen held that the gradually rising proportion of household charging for electric vehicles will lead to a urging demandfor smart grid. The North America has had preliminary solution to it while its future development depends on the batterycapacity. In consideration of the unpredictability of dominance of the current main electric vehicle battery technologies,Hansen stressed that the evaluation of security and functionality should be taken as main factors for selection. It isexpected that lithium battery will remain the mainstream of the market by 2030 while the eventual dominant technology isunknown.

The general electric vehicle battery technology covers lithium battery and fuel cell. As for fuel cell electric vehicles, manyauto manufacturers are expected to commercialize the production in 2015. Nevertheless, the price will be fairly high sothat the production will gain no profit in the previous 10 years, which will need more policy support from the government.Contemporarily, Japan possesses the most advanced infrastructure for fuel cell and lithium battery electric vehicles. As isestimated by Fuel Cell Commercialization Conference of Japan(FCCJ), about one thousand hydrogen fuel cell chargingstation will be set up in Japan in 2010. Hansen said frankly that the North America currently assessed that fuel cellelectric vehicles do not apply well to transport means. While it is an irresistible trend with a goal to reduce the emissionof carbon dioxide.

Electric Vehicles Bring Opportunities; Taiwanese Manufacturers March into the Chinese Mainland to Deploy

The new energy vehicles in mainland China, another market in demand of electric vehicles, are now in their infant stage. The current market main strategy is copying the overseas model and look currently with self-produced battery and motorsystem added. In this way, the electric vehicle market might be penetrated with advantages of low price together with lowand medium performance. Luxgen Motor of Taiwan, on the other hand, will march into the China mainland market with itsown brand - MPV electric vehicle. The product may probably won the market with overwhelming superiority both in

technology and quality.

Photo 2 DAI Zhi-yan, Special Research Consultant of the International Economic Research Division, Chung-HuaInstitution for Economic Research, held that the electric vehicle market was not expected to grow into a large scale dueto undersized demand in Taiwan market so that the vast market source of Mainland of China can be resorted to for profitgrowth.

Taiwanese manufacturers used to tend to work on standard components that meet needs of different auto plants with lowcost, which is always a non-high-net-profit area. DAI Zhi-yan, Special Research Consultant of the International EconomicResearch Division, Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research (Photo 2) pointed out that if Taiwan could keep up withthe technology of foreign manufactures through purchasing or strategic alliance, especially focusing on the developmentof electric and power system and vigorously engaging in the formulation of international standards, together taking theconsiderable demand of Mainland of China into account, the technology can be further matured and thus Taiwan mayhave the opportunities to obtain the specifications and whole vehicle certificate to enter into the international market. TheChina mainland is now sparing no efforts to promote the popularity of new energy vehicles via the 863 Program of TheEleventh Five Year Plan and the policy of Ten Cites & Thousand Units in order to follow the vehicle waste gas emissionstandards formulated by EU. The concerning technologies include fuel cell vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles and sheerelectric vehicles. DAI Zhi-yan considered that the fourteen cities participating in the test, including Shanghai, Shenzhen,Hangzhou and Changsha, through joint motivation from foreign-owned auto plants, joint-venture auto plants and localindependent auto plants, would be expected to form export channel via existing vehicle manufacturing and thus grow intothe base for foreign sales of new energy vehicle technology in China mainland.

Besidess, given that in Beijing, Hefei and Shenyang only local independent auto plants will participate, the main R&D TestBase for independent auto plants in China mainland will be formed with Beijing as its centre. DAI Zhi-yan expected that itis possible to support the market development dynamics for new energy vehicles produced by independent auto plants inChina mainland before the overseas auto plants march in a large scale into the Northeast market of China mainland.Kunming, Chongqing, Wuhan, Dalian and Changchun, on the other hand, will include the foreign-owned and joint-ventureauto plants into the plan of Ten Cites & Thousand Units so as to expand the new energy vehicle market of joint-ventureauto plants in central China and Southwest region.

Intelligent Vehicles Flood in and Automobile Electronics Products Show Novelty

Taipei Int'l Automobile Electronics Show this year planned an Intelligent Vehicle Pavilion on the theme of intelligence, security and environmental protection. In this event, manufacturers including Just Auto, Big Time, ALViS and FujitsuMicroelectronics won Auto Tronics Innovation Award and AMPA Innovation Award respectively, which highlighted theR&D capacity of the practitioners in auto electronics while piloting the trend of energy- saving, intelligent and multi-mediaauto electronics in the future.

Both Just Auto Accessories and Big Time were awarded for innovative design of daytime running light. Just Auto'sawarded products LED day-time running light uses 0.07W LED as light source, consuming only 6W of power overall.Compared to traditional daytime running lights that consume 55W of power, Just Auto's product saves up to 90% ofenergy. Therefore it is favored by Toyota. ALViS was awarded for its innovative Head-Up Display and FujitsuMicroelectronics won the prize by its single graphic system chip - Ruby MB86298 that that can support suchnew-generation in-car telematics entertainment system as digital dashboards and navigation systems. The chip mayprovide advanced graphic processing ability for embedded system.

Photo 3 Richard LEE, Field Application Engineer Assistant Manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics, Taiwan Branch, revealedthat not only the second class auto plants in Japan and South Korea would introduce IDB1394 to new cars, but also theJapanese first-class auto plants were planning to launch the new car models with IDB1394

ZHEN Guo-wei (Photo 3), Marketing Director of Fujitsu Microelectronics Asia Pacific expressed that 2010 would be aprosperous year for automobile electronics development. Due to the consumers' increasing demand on comfort andentertainment during driving, the in-car telematics entertainment system will be converted from a concept to practicalapplication. Currently, the main automobile electronics plants are dedicated to the development of the new generationautomobile electronics central display system, navigation system and auto entertainment system. With the increasingcomplexity of the telematics entertainment system, all auto plants are facing the challenge in the system stability, alongwith maintenance of the stability , high-quality and prospectus.

Richard LEE, Field Application Engineer Assistant Manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics,, Taiwan Branch pointed out, since MCU that can support four video input terminal and connect two flat display input terminals have not been presentin the industry, Fujitsu Microelectronics launched Ruby MB86298 that can immediately transmit contents taken by fourcameras installed around car perimeter and have the images processed. Therefore Ruby MB86298 can provide thedrivers and passengers on the rear seat with navigation, monitoring, TV and DVD/blue-ray movie. On the other hand, theproduct may display the dashboard functions including the speed indicator in 3D graphic modes.

In view of the irresistible trend of in-car telematics entertainment system, Fujitsu Microelectronics also displayed the busIDB1394 and FlexRay for the auto entertainment and security as well as auto 32-bit MCU. Compared with MOST, an autoentertainment busbar employed by BMW, the transmitting speed for first generation of IDB1394 reaches 400Mbit/s, eighttimes higher than that of MOST. The second generation boasts a even higher speed of 800Mbit/s, which meet therequirements of high quality video and audio performance.

Richard LEE held that the demand for in-car telematics entertainment system is continuously increasing. Given thatMOST has the separate lines to transmit video and audio, IDB1394 only employs a single line to transmit large volume ofhigh-quality video and auto data that allows for a timely in-car multi-media video and auto service to the driver andpassengers. It is expected that new cars with IDB1394 equipped will be launched by auto plants in Japan and SouthKorea from 2011 to 2012.

Under the background of prosperous Asian auto market and stable market demand in Europe and America, the globalautomobile electronics market is expected to continuously grow in the next few years. Moreover, as the consumers alsoanticipate improvement in security, comfort , energy-saving and video-auto technology, the future prosperity of theautomobile electronics is quite cheerful.

With Focus on Instrument Control and Graphic Display Fujitsu devotes itself to Bus for Automobile Use

AutoTronics Taipei is approaching the climax. Instrument panel control and bus for various automobile use remain one ofthe display focuses for automobile and electronics manufacturers. In this show, Fujitsu Microelectronics presentsIDB-1394 and FlexRay automobile bus control, GPU (graphics processing unit) and 32-bit controller as three main displaypillars, and respectively launches the solutions attracting wide attention.Attached Picture: Richard Lee, Application Technology Deputy Manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics, automobileinstrument control with graphics display solutions may enter the mass production stage at any time, and can meet therequirements of customized instrument display design of various automobile manufacturers.

In terms of automobile bus control, Richard Lee, Field Application Engineer assistant manager of FujitsuMicroelectronics, Taiwan Branch, indicated that in the concept of active safe whole automobile design, the securitydetection and information feedback in the proximity of the automobile body is quite important. Besidess the delivery ofthe data, the bus design that can exchange information with each other shall be established. Meanwhile, the speed totransmit the data should also be faster. Hence the feature of automobile FlexRay control network is highlighted.

The transmission speed of conventional CAN or LIN automobile busb is only 1 Mbps. However, FlexRay reaches 10Mbps. Moreover, FlexRay involves the redundant design, namely, it is designed with two channels to avoid any risk ofdata transmission interruption. In this way, the bus transmission security can be improved significantly. On the otherhand, FlexRay adopts the time-driven mode to make the planning more stable and flexible. At present, nevertheless,FlexRay still can not replace CAN/LIN completely because it remains high in the software design cost of system. What'smore, FlexRay cannot be further adopted broadly unless it passes more real automobiles security testing provided byautomobile manufacturers.

Therefore, now the FlexRay automobile bus control and application have no direct relation with the security. It focuses onthe softness and hardness control of the suspension system, handbrake by-wire system, etc. while the power controlsystem centers around CAN/LIN. In a short term, FlexRay should coexist with CAN/LIN. Richard Lee indicated, in termsof FlexRay, Fujitsu Microelectronics mainly adopts the gateway mode to make it coexist with CAN, and designs themessage exchange architecture. The bottom layer adopts the 32 bit MCU to collaborate with BSP development platform. The software drive design is cooperate with the third-party manufacturers from Japan and Germany. Currently, FujitsuMicroelectronics has launched the close cooperation with some whole automobile manufacturers and Tier-1 spare partsand components big vendors in Japan and Germany over the relevant FlexRay solution. It mainly applies FlexRay tosuch systems as ECU, throttle, brake, and transmission, to name just a few.

On the other hand, Fujitsu Microelectronics also develops the IDB-1394 standards to target the multiple output displayapplication of automobile infotainment. This part requires the wiring design to be more simplified and concentrated.IDB-1394 can meet the design requirements for wiring bus as DVD, navigation map, and digital TV and other automobileinfotainment system during the synchronized broadcasting and playing inside the car. Now IDB-1394 transmissioncapacity may reach 400 Mbps, which is more competitive than MOST adopted by European standard. It may also reach

Page 21: If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> - fujitsu.com SEMICONDUCTOR LIMITED ASI… · If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> FUJITSU SEMICONDUCTOR Limited Asia

800 Mbps in future. In this way, the blue-ray DVDs and digital TVs can be applied in the automobile entertainment system.Through IDB-1394, the passengers on the driver seat and those in the rear seats can enjoy video contents suiting theirdifferent interests in a synchronous manner.

As for the round display processor, Fujitsu Microelectronics displays a new round display processor. The external CPUadopts the 4th generation GDC core, the 90 nm process may reduce power consumption. This product involves fourimage input designs and has the functions of two display controllers and 3D engines so that the images with differentsizes and resolutions can be displayed. The new round display processor can be mainly applied to the automobile digitalinstrument screen and center console and may integrates all the push-button display and control functions through oneGDC. Fujitsu Microelectronics adopts the design architecture of placing GDC on the instrument panel. It should be notedthat the display mode of instrument panel is a pointer digital instrument rather than an image instrument. According to thetraditional mechanical analogy of pointer instrument in combination with the digital information display, Fujitsu alsolaunches the relevant graphics display controller solution ,the speed per hour, the rotation speed and oil pressureinformation are still displayed through mechanical pointer. While for other security monitoring status, the digital imageinformation may be delivered through the ECU at the backend.

On the part of the 32-bit controller, Fujitsu further shows the standard automobile controller solution regarding powersteering and automobile air-conditioner. This solution bases on the use of the previous motor control technology in bothinverter cooler and inverter refrigerator, and is also applicable to the motor control part of the electric vehicle. With theadoption of the RISC core of Fujitsu's new generation FR81S controller, this controller integrates with the floating pointunit. Richard Lee pointed out that, Besidess the RISC architecture adopted by the existing 32-bit MCU, Fujitsu willintroduce the ARM core in the future MCU product line and advance in the direction of the multi-core architecture. It'sworth noting that in terms of the future automobile MCU architecture, Fujitsu will further adopt the ARM Cortex-R4Farchitecture. Based on dual-core, it is extremely possible to apply such architecture to the motor control and batterymonitoring in the electric vehicle field.
