There is a marvellous idea on page 11 showing how you can donate to the
Church Hall refurbishment by getting your on-line shops to make a
percentage donation whilst not costing you a penny—sounds good to me.
(see p11)
EDITOR CHASTISED
By placing the Parish Council Meeting Agenda for public viewing on the
village notice board some of you may have noticed that your editor’s
comments were to be reviewed by the Council. My past comments have
been to highlight examples of un-democratic methods of deciding what the
village wants. I have always stated that my editorial consisted of my
personal views and I have offered to publish any return comments, good or
bad. I did receive two adverse comments but in both cases the writer’s did
not wish their comments to be published.
I recently attended a full council meeting and reported a mistake in the
minutes of the previous meeting and I was rudely dealt with by the CWPC
Chair. My point was that the minutes should accurately record what goes
on in a meeting and the only post-meeting corrections should be spelling
or grammatical errors Accepting accurate minutes is the starting point of
any meeting.
Road problems:
We have a problem with the stretch of road joining Rudgard Avenue with the
Parade. The Village Improvement Committee have this in hand and are
hoping for a solution in the near future, or at least to establish the
responsibility for its upkeep.
Brilliant Knit and Natter: Donating £800 to local charities. See page 10 for
a message of gratitude from Brownie Packs.

The only criteria to register are that you must live in the parish and are baptised and over 16; that you worship regularly at St Peter and St Paul, Cherry Willingham and/or All Saints Greetwell and are baptised and over 16. V B g 2013
A couple of weeks ago I found on my Facebook newsfeed a video called Pay it
Forward’. It began with a young boy seeing someone being mugged by a group
of three or four older boys, and then looking around him and seeing graffitied
walls and the mess in his community. Without saying a word in this video he
decided to break that cycle with an act of kindness. The first person he saw in
trouble, he helped, in fact all he did was pick up someone’s mobile phone; that
person later saw a woman struggling to get a child onto a bus, he helped her;
later she saw an older person who couldn’t find what he needed in a shop and
she helped him, and so it went on. The point – well to just demonstrate I think,
that we can all make each other’s world a little brighter by being kind, and
kindness breeds kindness and we can pay it forward’. The video ended with the
young boy collecting a pot of paint and starting to paint the graffitied wall. One
by one he was joined by others. Again no words, just simple actions, which
changed everything.
On a similar theme, the folk of Cherry Willingham and beyond have been
paying it forward’ by doing something simple but effective and I again want to
thank everyone in our own community who has paid it forward’ by knitting
jumpers for now, probably a thousand children who will benefit from receiving
a fish and chip vest’. Each one will make a difference to a child and a family.
You will never know who that is, but once again thank you!
As I write this, we are about to begin the season of Lent in our churches, then at
the end of the month of March we will remember the death and celebrate the
resurrection of Jesus. This is the season in which we remember that Jesus paid
it forward’. His sacrifice wasn’t just for the sake of his followers two thousand
years ago, it was for the sake of all of us who followed after, billions of us, for
His death on the cross gave us the potential of relationship with God. He did it
all so that you and I can be restored to God. Jesus paid it forward’ in the
supreme sacrifice of His own life on a cross, and God the Father paid it
forward’ by restoring Him to life in the resurrection. That is what I shall be
celebrating at the end of this month, for it changed my life and I shall always be
thankful that Jesus paid it forward for me and for all of us!
May God bless you richly in this season of riches.

P g v v g x w ? m A P g 7 m d 18 mm S when CW2020, the Community-Led-Plan, will be presented and find out what other residents have said they want to happen in our village in the future. Other items on the agenda include an explanation of the Neighbourhood Plan process (see item below), an update on the Youth Centre and presentation of the annual Stead Award. D 6.30 m and refreshments will be available before the start of the meeting.
L d w d m : Thank you to those residents who responded to last month’s request concerning interest in allotments. The council has explored a number of options but has so far been unable to find any land. If you own any suitable land you would be prepared to lease out, or know of any that might be available, please let the clerk know.
N g d P : At its December meeting the Council resolved to prepare a Neighbourhood Plan, a legal planning document which will help us implement some of the village’s aspirations as indicated in the CW2020 Plan. As part of the Neighbourhood Planning Process, Parish Councils first have to apply to designate the area that they wish the plan to cover. Cherry Willingham Parish Council has therefore formally applied to West Lindsey District Council for the whole of the parish of Cherry Willingham to be the area considered for designation in the Neighbourhood Plan. Details of the application may be found on the West Lindsey District Council website or viewed in the Parish Office during public opening hours. The consultation period of 6 weeks ends on 25th March; any comments received within this time will be considered as part of the formal designation process. If you wish to submit a comment, contact West Lindsey District Council either by email to [email protected] or by letter to Rob Lawton, Neighbourhood Plans, Guildhall, Marshalls Yard, Gainsborough, DN21 2NA.

January was all about weather. It was so bad that we had
to cancel our first meeting of the year.
February fared better with our lady speaker from the Hospice.
May I remind you that our meetings are every 3rd Monday at
2.30– 4pm.Next meeting March 18th.
g m B dm
We meet in the sports hall at Cherry Willingham
Community School on Tuesday evenings from 7.45 until
9.45 pm.
For more information please contact Sue on 01522 523656
or Ian on 01522 754414.
The report of our February meeting will be in the next edition as it takes place after the copy date. y then we will have received our calendar of speakers and activities for 2013, the result of a lot of hard work behind the scenes by Sylvia eardmore to whom we are indebted for providing such a variety of entertainment.
Sadly, Jane Jordan is retiring as President and Ha el Larcombe and Christine Dawson are stepping down from the committee after making many valued contributions to our branch over the years. It is due to ladies such as these that Cherry Willingham WI is the thriving organisation it has become. We look forward to welcoming not only a new President but also two new committee members. Our treasurer, Alison Pike, is also standing down but will remain on the committee.
Visitors are always welcome to our monthly meetings and hopefully will be inspired to become members taking advantage in the learning and recreational opportunities offered at both local and national level.

David Wigley /Abbott was the Vicar of Cherry Willingham and Greetwell
between 1888 and 1891.Since 1809 Vicars had been allowed to live out of the
parish as there was no suitable accommodation, so he lived at Wadsley House,
eaumont Fee. Whilst he was Vicar a major redecoration and restoration of
the church took place which was described in the Lincolnshire Chronicle as
follows.
g m_
During the month of June the pretty little church of this parish has
undergone thorough redecoration and repair. The work has been most
satisfactorily carried out by Mr. Smith of Lincoln, under the superintendence
of Mr. W. Huddlestone, building surveyor. The lead roof has been repaired
g m Y
Those of you who attended the Annual Parish meeting last year will recall that
Lincolnshire County Council stated that the centre was going to close. Thanks to
the hard work of a group of local volunteers the centre is going to remain open.
Once the formalities have been completed, hopefully by the end of March, then
we will be able to open on a Monday and Friday night.
At the moment the centre is open on a Monday night from 7 to 9.30. From 7 to 8
we have use of a 3g pitch where everyone can play football. It is very encourag-
ing to see the number of girls already joining in with the football. We have about
30 young people currently on the books and when we open for 2 nights this num-
ber should increase.
We will shortly be starting a recruitment campaign for 2 paid leaders. There will
be a notice about this on the parish notice boards. In addition we still need volun-
teers who are prepared to give up a couple of evenings a month to help keep the
centre open. The young people are lively and we want to have a range of activi-
ties available so that they can join in or just be with their friends to chat and relax.
So if you have a skill which you could share with the young people then contact
me at the address below.
Please be aware that all volunteers will have to have a CR check and par-
ticipate in training aimed at keeping the young people safe. oth the CR
check and the training are legal requirements.
If you can help us to keep the youth centre open then please either give me
a call or email me on [email protected].

and the stone cornice pointed with Portland cement so as to render the
fabric thoroughly watertight. The wood and ironwork of the bell turret, as
well as the iron fall pipes and the ironwork of the window frames, have
received three good coats of oil paint. The door at the west end has been
grained in dark oak and then varnished. ut it is in the interior where the
decorator's art has been most strikingly displayed.
The ceiling has been distempered a deep cream, with a floral design, the
remainder of the ceiling being filled in with cross keys and cross swords,
and the monogram "I.H.S interspersed at intervals. The plaster cornice has
been picked out in different colours, and below the cornice is an imitation
twist moulding and a Greek border, the whole being finished with lines of
white and green. The walls of the nave are finished with a blue green colour,
with borders in maroon, black and vermilion. The texts on the walls are
painted in black Roman letters, on a painted ribbon, with ends turned up in a
very artistic manner in vermillion.
The apse has received special attention, the wall being painted a deep terra
cotta, from the ceiling to the bottom of the windows. A Tudor rose diaper
(conventional), in two shades of green , is formed on two sides of the
Communion Table, filled in with the Agnus Dei and the pelican feeding its
young. The whole of the designs are original, with the exception of the
Greek border, which is a copy from South Kensington. Although the Church
was not quite finished by the end of June, the Vicar was able to hold his third
Annual Flower Service on St Peter's Day, when 105 beautiful bouquets were
offered by the children for the Lincoln County Hospital. Reopening Services
were held on Sunday July 6th, when the Vicar announced that £20 was still
required to defray the cost of redecoration. The offertory for the day
amounted to £1 .12s. We may add that the Parishioners have come forward
nobly to aid their Vicar in his efforts to carry out a much needed
renovation; but that owing to the lack of wealthy residents, help is earnestly
solicited from those who love the Church of England and value its
ministrations. The smallest contributions will be thankfully acknowledged
by the Vicar (Rev D.W.Abbot), who resides at Wadsley House, eaumont Fee.

L g - D Y m F m B d ? The story of the arrival of the bones of St Oswald at ardney Abbey was
reported by the great Saxon historian, the Venerable ede, and has given
rise to a well-known Lincolnshire saying. On the night that Oswald's bones
arrived, the monks shut the abbey gates and refused to allow the cart carry-
ing the bones into the abbey. ede tells us that during the night a 'pillar of
light' shone skywards from the cart and convinced the monks that Oswald
was indeed a saint and that they had been wrong to refuse to accept his
bones. Ever after, so the story goes, they left their gates wide open - hence
the saying 'Do you come from ardney? meaning that you have left a door
open. Do you know any more local sayings and their origin? Send to Editor.

ad weather took control since Christmas with only two games being played
one which was the quarter final of the Richardson Cup against the lues
Club at Gainsborough. Losing 2-0 the team put on a brilliant performance to
win 3-2 with a goal snatched in the last minute.
We have to visit Fulbeck for the semi final were a good win gives a chance
for some silverware.
In the other game we put in a poor performance to lose 7-2 against Fulbeck
in a league game who seem to be our bogey team. We have a Village Trophy
semi final game at Cherry against Metheringham on 23rd February.
Any players in the village who want to form a Sunday League team for next
season should be thinking about it as entries will soon have to be in. If inter-

J L d I am grateful to the Editor of “Cherry News” for this opportunity to write a few words about my late mother, Joan McLeod, who died on 23rd January. She and my father Neil moved to Cherry Willingham in 1963, and lived in Larkin Avenue. My father died in 1994, but mother stayed in the house until the end of April 2012, at which time she moved to Walton Manor Residential Home in Wakefield to be nearer to me and my partner. In nearly 50 years in Cherry Willingham, mother was active in village life. She delivered the “Cherry News” in Larkin Avenue for many years; she had a term as vice president of the WI, and had been a long standing member, was a member of the Ladies Tea Club, the Gardening Club, and the Ladies Group, and was a regular attender at the Parish Church, and, latterly, at Greetwell Church. Father was for a long time a Parish Councillor, and served for a while as Chair. Mother was so active in her various clubs and societies that I used to reckon that she had a livelier social life than I did! Joan and Neil enjoyed life in Cherry Willingham, and never once regretted moving out of Lincoln. As she got older, mother gave up her car, but bought an electric buggy, and enjoyed whi ing up to the village centre, no doubt to the consternation of pedestrians, to do her shopping, and to meet people on the Parade. She was much supported by good friends and neighbours in Larkin Avenue. She was sorry to leave, but accepted the inevitability with good grace, and in many respects her health improved over the last few months. This is what made her death so surprising, as there had been no signs of illness. ut she suffered what turned out to be a major stroke and died peacefully in Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield. Her funeral was held at St Mary’s Church at Horbury Junction, where she worshipped sometimes on her visits to me, most recently last Christmas. It was good that her closest friends from Larkin Avenue were able to come for the service: and I want to thank all those who have sent cards and messages of sympathy. John McLeod

Scouting: Scouts 10½ -14 yrs., Cub Scouts 8 - 10½ yrs., Beaver Scouts 5¾ - 8 yrs.
Our Group Scout leader, Mike Bull, has been in hospital recently. We all wish him a full and speedy recovery.
Our Scout leader, Rob Johnson, has been appointed as District Commissioner for Boston District, so he will no longer be our Skip, but has promised to help us whenever he can. Rob has done a great job in bringing our Scout Troop back to Life, and we wish him well with his new appointment, Thanks Skip. Colin, 'Wolf', from the Beaver Colony has moved on to become the new Scout leader. Beavers will miss him for a while until they reach Scouts age, when they will meet up again.
Since Christmas we have missed a couple of meetings because of the snow. However, we still pack in great activities. All sections enjoyed our trip to see ‘Dick Whittington’ at the Theatre Royal.
Under their new leadership, the Scouts have been working towards their Global Challenge, one of eight they must complete to achieve their Chief Scout’s Gold Award. Also their Guide Activity badge, which involves knowing the location of important places within the immediate area and being able to direct people to these places, as well as reading street maps. The troop is expecting to invest three new Scouts after half term.
The Cubs have been working on their activity badges including a visit to ‘Pets at Home’, for their Animal Carer Activity badge. They will soon be involved in growing things for the Gala Flower Show.
Beavers have made Bird Seed cakes, worked on Personal Safety with a visit from PCSO Jackie Parker and her Police car, and have almost completed their Emergency Aid Stage 1 badge. This week we'll be making and eating pancakes. After half term we shall be concentrating on growing potatoes and sun flowers for the Cherry Gala Flower show competition, in July.
We are always looking for more Scouts in all sections and we do need more help to run the meetings, so if anyone of any age would like to join the Fun, please contact Mike Bull on 01522 807022.
Do you have a daughter who wants to join any of the Guiding groups in the village? Rainbows 5-7 yrs., Brownies 7-10 yrs., Guides 10+ yrs. and
Senior Section 14+ yrs.
If your daughter wishes to join any of the guiding sections she needs to be
registered through Girlguiding UK. Please register her details through the Girlguiding UK website http://www.girlguiding.org.uk/home.aspx Click on the Parent section. You will then need to click on the Register your daughter link. Any queries, do not hesitate to contact me.

life, forgive us, Lord, when we use prayer as a last resort rather than our
first course of action.
We invite everyone to join us for this meditation in the week before Holy
Week.
Any queries about the Mothers Union contact our Chairman: A P k
-(856588), or Secretary A J (751095) or any M.U. member.
SCOUTS PAPER COLLECTION THANK YOU — to all who put out their paper on the third Saturday of the month and to those who help collect it. The money we receive for recycling paper supports the running of our Head Quarters, and is a vital part of our fundraising.

Cherry Willingham Twinning Association
Who we are and what we do. -Newcomers to the village
might wonder what the Twinning Association is about; for
some 25 years we have been twinned with the town of L
G d L near Le Mans in France, a
similarly si ed place to Cherry set in rolling countryside.
2013 will see the French visit Cherry and in 2014 we will
visit Le Grand Luce and during these visits we host each
other, many long-term friendships having been forged over the years; this
means that when we visit France all we pay are the travelling costs, our
French friends
putting us up in their homes and organi ing visits and events during our
stay – we have visited many interesting places around Le Grand Luce.
When the French come here we put them up and pay for their visits and
events here, which is why we have fund-raising social events in Cherry
every month or so; even if you cannot take part in the visits we are still an
active social organi ation in the village, as you will have seen in our items
in Cherry News. We have a Committee meeting on the 12th March when
we will finalise the arrangements for the French visit, but the report on that
will have to wait until March. . The first job of the new Committee will be
to finalise plans for the visit of our French friends from April 27th to May
1st; if you would like to be involved in that visit and have a lot of fun,
contact Terry on 753239 or John on 595173.

F g -m - w After the Christmas break at our first meeting we welcomed our speaker Isabel Wyatt. As a prominent member of the Red Cross she reminded us of the changes we could do to help if we ever come across an accident. Many long held procedures have now been replaced by new methods.. We were each given a small booklet, with up-to-date -instructions.
She was thanked by Chairman Mrs Margaret Coates.
Refreshments were served and the usual raffle was held.

LIVES medics and first responders are all volunteers who are fully
trained and equipped to be able to respond to emergencies in their
community. LIVES aims to be at your side within 5-6 minutes of you
making that 999 call. They attend over 16,000 calls a year and there
are over 160 responder groups across the county.
LIVES Medics & First Responders are all volunteers who give up
their time to respond to emergencies in their community. So when
you dial 999, not only will an ambulance be mobilised, but at the
same time, the LIVES Medic or Responder on call in your area will
also receive notification that you need their help.
Helen Booth, Nathan Goodman, Charlotte Rose, and Andrew
Parkinson are our responders that cover the Fiskerton, Reepham,
and Cherry Willingham area. More volunteers are urgently needed
if you are interested in becoming a LIVES responder please contact
